Yes—early versions of Stable Diffusion 3 Medium (SD3 Medium) produced startlingly bad human figures. Users reported fused limbs, malformed hands and feet, and bodies that collapsed into incoherent shapes, particularly in ordinary posed or lying-down scenes. The model launched on June 12, 2024, and the problem became visible within hours. Stability AI later acknowledged serious body-pose and training-data issues, but no published statistic establishes how often these failures occurred.
What happened when SD3 Medium launched
SD3 Medium was Stability AI’s 2-billion-parameter text-to-image model released on June 12, 2024. The company positioned it as an open model for consumer PCs and laptops as well as enterprise GPUs, with weights distributed under its Community License. Stability AI described it as its “most advanced text-to-image open model yet.”
Almost immediately, users shared generations showing what became known as “Stable Diffusion 3 body horror”: extra or fused arms, twisted legs, misshapen hands and feet, and figures whose anatomy did not form a coherent body. Ars Technica characterized the release as a major step backward for human rendering compared with contemporary image generators.
The failures were most obvious in ordinary prompts
The reports did not focus only on difficult or explicit prompts. People encountered mangled anatomy while asking for routine scenes such as a person lying on grass, standing, or appearing in a group. Community descriptions included “mangled hands,” “appendage soup,” and questions about why SD3 struggled with girls lying on the grass.

SD3 Medium was only one member of the SD3 family
Stability AI announced a broader SD3 family in February 2024, with model sizes ranging from 800 million to 8 billion parameters. The anatomy controversy concerns the Medium release, not every model in that range.
What the distorted bodies looked like
Hands and feet
Hands and feet appeared fused, elongated, duplicated, or attached at impossible angles. These are difficult structures for image models because they contain many small joints and must remain consistent with the rest of the pose.
Limbs and torso connections
Arms and legs could merge with one another or with the torso. In some examples, the model produced a recognizable face and clothing while the body underneath became a tangle of disconnected appendages.

Lying and complex poses
Figures reclining on the ground or interacting with several objects were especially revealing. The model had to maintain body proportions, foreshortening, contact with the ground, and limb placement at the same time; the shared examples often failed on several of those relationships at once.

The widely discussed filtering hypothesis
The leading explanation in contemporaneous reporting was that aggressive filtering of adult or NSFW material removed too many anatomy-relevant images from the training data. Nude or partially nude photographs can contain useful information about body proportions, joints, and unusual poses. If filtering removes a large portion of those examples, a model may see fewer reliable depictions of human bodies.
That explanation remains a plausible hypothesis, not a proven single cause. Ars Technica and analysts also noted that Stable Diffusion 2.0 had experienced related human-rendering problems before later versions improved. The available reports do not establish exactly which data, filtering rules, architecture choices, or training stages produced SD3 Medium’s failures.

Stability AI’s own explanation
In a July 5, 2024 follow-up, the Stability team said SD3 Medium had “critical quality issues mainly related to body poses and words that were too rarely seen in the training set.” That statement points to both pose handling and insufficient representation of uncommon words, rather than identifying one definitive mechanism such as NSFW filtering.

Stability AI wrote: “We acknowledge that our latest release, SD3 Medium, didn’t meet our community’s high expectations.” It said the team was pursuing continuous improvement rather than treating the launch model as finished.

Its internal tests had produced a different picture
The company also stated: “Before we released SD3 Medium, our initial testing indicated that it was, in most cases, a much better base model compared to SDXL, in terms of prompt adherence, diversity, detail, and overall quality.” That claim describes Stability’s pre-release evaluation; it does not invalidate the public anatomy examples, which exposed a weakness those tests did not adequately capture.

Licensing was clarified during the same period
Stability AI’s 2024 Community License update said free commercial use applied to individuals and small businesses with annual revenue below USD $1 million, subject to the license terms. That was a dated policy statement and may have changed; anyone deploying SD3 should read the current license rather than relying on the 2024 threshold.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The evidence consists of contemporaneous journalism, user-shared generations, and Stability AI’s statements. No reliable published failure-rate statistic was identified, so it is not accurate to claim that a specific percentage of SD3 images had malformed bodies.

- Human-anatomy reliability: early SD3 Medium examples showed a serious weakness in this area.
- Prompt adherence, typography, and detail: Stability AI claimed improvements over SDXL in its internal testing, but that was not a neutral public benchmark.
- Hardware and hosting: Stability AI targeted consumer computers and enterprise GPUs, while the exact practical requirements depend on the implementation and workflow.
- Openness: SD3 Medium’s weights were released as an open model under the Community License, unlike closed hosted services.
- Licensing: commercial rights depend on the applicable Community License terms and any later revisions.
For projects where accurate people are essential, users should test the exact checkpoint and workflow with representative poses before committing to it. Generate several seeds, inspect hands and limb connections at full size, and keep an alternative model available when anatomy fails repeatedly. No prompt formula can be assumed to repair a model-level weakness documented across many examples.
The practical verdict
SD3 Medium’s launch demonstrated that a model can improve on some measures while regressing sharply on a basic visual task. The “mangled human bodies” problem was real and visible, the aggressive-filtering explanation was plausible but unproven, and Stability AI itself later admitted critical body-pose and training-coverage issues. Treat SD3 Medium as a model that requires direct anatomy testing—not as a universally reliable upgrade over SDXL or other image generators.
