Gemini is better at open-ended questions, writing and planning than the early version that prompted complaints in 2024. But that does not make it a better phone assistant for everyone. People who expect a quick, dependable action—start navigation, play a particular podcast, change a setting or handle a call—can still run into unsupported features, Assistant-powered fallbacks or behavior that varies by device and context.
So “Android users aren’t impressed” is too broad as a verdict. The more accurate point is that some users remain dissatisfied with Gemini as a replacement for Google Assistant, even if they value it as a generative AI tool.
What the original complaints did—and did not—show
The headline idea dates to a March 7, 2024 Droid Life report about frustrated Pixel owners and negative Google Play reviews. Those examples described a mismatch: Gemini could answer questions, but users said it was less useful than Assistant for familiar jobs involving reminders, Maps, music services and other voice actions.

That reporting captured anecdotal reactions, not a representative survey of Android users or a systematic test of every device. It is useful as a record of early frustration, not proof that Android users generally dislike Gemini. The question now is narrower: does Gemini reliably replace the particular Assistant functions a person depends on?

Two different ideas of a phone assistant
Google Assistant was built around short, relatively deterministic commands: set a timer, call someone, play media or respond to a device-control request. Gemini is designed for natural-language conversation, summarizing, writing, planning and multimodal requests. It can be more capable when a task needs interpretation, but a simple command still needs to happen quickly and correctly.
On Android, Gemini is not always a clean break from Assistant. It can be the primary mobile assistant on eligible devices, while Google’s documentation says Assistant continues to power or handle some quick actions and particular contexts. The user may see a Gemini response for one request and encounter Assistant, a connected app or an unsupported-feature message for another.
What Gemini can do now
Gemini is not limited to answering trivia. Depending on device, language, account, location and app support, Google describes Android uses that include text and voice conversations, image or camera input, Gemini Live, connected-app requests, lists, reminders, phone settings and YouTube Music playlists. It can also help with open-ended work such as drafting, rewriting, brainstorming and planning. Google’s Android Gemini guide outlines these capabilities and their availability qualifications.

That breadth is why a blanket claim that Gemini cannot control a phone would be wrong. It can perform some actions and connect with Google services such as Gmail, Maps, Tasks and YouTube. But advertised capability is not a guarantee that every action works for every account, language, device or app combination. A connected-app permission or account restriction can also be the issue rather than the model itself.
Where the replacement still feels incomplete
Google’s own Gemini and Assistant support guidance acknowledges that some Assistant features are not supported in Gemini and advises users to switch back if they rely on a missing function. The documentation also describes contexts where Assistant remains involved, including Google Maps navigation, Android Auto, Waze, Assistant voice typing in Gboard, some device notifications and locked Pixel Tablet use. Certain media-provider functions and Interpreter mode are among the unsupported Assistant services identified in the guidance.
Phone control has specific limits too. Google says the Gemini Phone app does not currently support accepting or rejecting calls directly through the Phone app, although some actions may be possible with Assistant’s help. Locked and unlocked behavior can differ. Language availability, supervised-account restrictions, work or school account policies and device differences can change what is available.
These are not all the same kind of failure. A task might be unsupported; it might need a connected app or permission; the device could be in a context where Assistant handles the request; or the feature might vary by account or language. From a user’s perspective, however, the result can be the same: a request that once felt routine now needs troubleshooting or manual steps.
Why the experience can feel inconsistent
A typical interaction can begin with the same “Hey Google” phrase or gesture a user previously used for Assistant. Gemini may answer conversationally, but when the user asks it to act, another part of Google’s system may take over—or no available integration may complete the job. The outcome can change when the phone is locked, navigation is active, Android Auto is connected or the request is made inside another app.
That hybrid behavior makes failures hard to diagnose. The problem might be Gemini’s interpretation, an unsupported feature, missing permission, a language or account limitation, an app integration, or Assistant handling that particular context. Google’s documentation explains some of these boundaries, but it does not promise that every Assistant feature will reach Gemini or give a timetable for feature parity.

Who is most likely to be dissatisfied?
- People who mostly issue short commands: If the main value is timers, alarms, calls, messages or quick settings, a conversational response is not an improvement unless it completes the action just as reliably.
- Drivers: Maps, Android Auto and Waze have Assistant involvement, so do not assume Gemini is the only assistant in the car workflow.
- Media listeners: Check support for the specific music, podcast or radio service you use; some Assistant media-provider functions are not supported in Gemini.
- Users who need predictable hands-free control: Reliability matters more than generative breadth, particularly for accessibility or driving routines.
- People using managed or restricted accounts: Work and school policies, work profiles, supervised accounts, device eligibility and language support can limit access. Google says the Gemini mobile app is not available in the Android Work Profile.
- Privacy-conscious users: Connecting an assistant to personal services means considering the permissions and data access involved. Someone who does not want an AI assistant connected to messages, email, calendar or other context may prefer not to enable those integrations.
Gemini is more likely to appeal to people who ask follow-up questions, want help writing or planning, use supported Google services, or value image input and Gemini Live. For these users, occasional friction with a device action may be an acceptable trade-off for a more capable conversational tool.

Rather than judging Gemini by one impressive demo or one frustrating failure, test the routines that matter on your phone. Try them both locked and unlocked where relevant, and in the contexts you actually use. For example:

- Set and cancel a reminder; create a list you use regularly.
- Play a specific song, podcast or other media from your preferred service.
- Change a device setting, such as volume, that you commonly adjust by voice.
- Send a text or call a contact, if you rely on those actions.
- Start Maps navigation, then try a voice command while navigation is active.
- If you use Android Auto or Waze, test the workflow there too.
For each test, note whether the action completed, required a confirmation or permission, opened another app, merely explained what to do, or failed. If an action fails, check account and app permissions and whether the feature is supported in your language and context before concluding that Gemini itself cannot do it. The point is not to excuse an unreliable result; it is to identify whether switching assistants would actually solve it.

Keep Gemini, switch back, or use both?
Choose by task, not by which assistant sounds more advanced. Gemini is a strong fit for complex questions, writing, planning and supported connected-app work. If Google Assistant handles a required action more consistently on your device, switching back is a reasonable choice: Google itself recommends it when a feature you rely on is missing from Gemini.
To select Gemini, Google says the Google app must be the default digital-assistant app on an eligible device. The usual Android path is Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Google app; labels can differ by manufacturer and Android version. Then open the Gemini app and choose it as the mobile assistant if prompted. To return to Assistant, look in Gemini settings or your device’s digital-assistant settings for the choice between Gemini and Google Assistant. The exact control and its availability vary by device and software version. Google’s Android setup guide covers eligibility and setup.
You can also decide not to connect personal apps or use Gemini as the default. A user does not have to treat “newest” as “best for every routine.” If the needed task is handled in a context that still uses Assistant, the hybrid arrangement may be enough; if the interruptions outweigh Gemini’s benefits, use Assistant where the device permits it.

Do not subscribe solely to repair a phone-control gap. Google’s usage-limit guidance describes paid Google AI plans as expanding access to Gemini features and models, with limits and plan details subject to change. More model access may matter to someone who regularly hits usage limits or uses Gemini heavily for writing, research or planning. It does not guarantee that an unsupported call control, media integration or operating-system action will become available.
Try the free experience against your real routines first. If the missing capability is a system integration rather than a model limit, paying for a higher-tier model is unlikely to be the answer. Google’s plans and availability can vary by country and account; check the live Google One offering for current terms rather than relying on an old price.
