Why can’t I take a screenshot? Start by checking whether capture fails everywhere or only inside one app, protected screen, or managed remote session. Try a second built-in capture method, then check the clipboard or screenshot folder. If the failure is limited to sensitive content and you see a black image or a security-policy message, the app or administrator may have deliberately blocked capture. Use an approved export or ask the device or service administrator; do not try to bypass the protection.
First, identify the kind of failure
Take a harmless test shot of the desktop, home screen, or a basic app. Compare that result with the screen that failed.
| What you observe | Most likely owner of the problem | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens on any screen | Shortcut, keyboard, permissions, or device-wide software issue | Use another built-in capture path and check where output is sent |
| Capture works elsewhere but not in one app | App security setting or content policy | Use the app’s export/share feature or contact its support team |
| Image is black or a region is missing | Protected window, remote-session policy, or failed rendering | Test another app; ask the administrator if the screen is managed |
| Screenshot exists but you cannot find it | Unexpected clipboard, folder, or cloud destination | Inspect the clipboard and the device’s screenshot location |
| Only a work or cloud desktop is blocked | Administrator-controlled screen-capture protection | Request an approved recording or export method |
This split prevents you from treating a policy decision as a broken keyboard shortcut. It also avoids assuming that every black screenshot is caused by digital-rights management: protected Android windows and managed Azure Virtual Desktop sessions are established causes, but other services can fail for different reasons.
Windows: use a different capture path
Snipping Tool
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Choose a rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip.
- Select the area or window. The result appears in the Snipping Tool window.
- Use the toolbar to edit, save, or share it.
If a keyboard shortcut stopped responding, opening the app directly separates a shortcut problem from a capture-engine problem.

Windows + Shift + S
Press Windows + Shift + S to open the snipping overlay. Select the capture mode and area, then click the notification or open Snipping Tool to save the result. A capture may be available for editing without being written to a file automatically.
Print Screen and the clipboard
Print Screen captures the full screen to the clipboard. Open Paint, an email, or another image-capable app and press Ctrl + V. If the image pastes successfully, the capture worked; the issue is the save destination rather than the shortcut. On keyboards that require it, use Fn + Print Screen.

When a remote desktop is involved
If the missing area belongs to Azure Virtual Desktop, an administrator may have enabled screen-capture protection. Microsoft states that, when this setting is enabled, remote content is automatically blocked in screenshots and screen sharing. Ask the administrator for an approved export, report, or support workflow instead of attempting to defeat the setting.
Android: standard shortcuts and protected apps
Try the built-in methods
- Press Power and Volume Down at the same time and release quickly.
- If that does not work, hold the Power button for a few seconds and choose Screenshot if your phone shows that option.
- Open the screenshot preview or Photos/Gallery app and verify that the image was saved.
Button placement and menus vary by manufacturer. If neither method works on any screen, Google directs you to the phone maker’s support site for the model-specific procedure. Android 12 and later provide scrolling screenshots on most screens that allow scrolling, but an app can disable or limit that function.

Why an Android screenshot is black
Android apps can mark a window as secure. The Android Developers documentation describes the FLAG_SECURE display flag as a way to keep an activity’s contents out of screenshots and non-secure displays. Banking, password, streaming, enterprise, and authentication apps may use this control.
A black image or an explicit “can’t take screenshots due to security policy” message limited to one app is therefore often intentional. Google Play policy requires apps to respect another app’s FLAG_SECURE declaration and prohibits bypass workarounds. Installing a “screenshot unlocker,” rooting a phone, or using a second capture app is not a supported fix and can expose credentials or violate workplace rules.

Approved alternatives
- Use the app’s Export, Download, Share, or statement-generation feature.
- Ask the service provider whether it can supply a document or image through an approved channel.
- For a managed device, contact the organization’s administrator and explain what record you need and why.
- Capture an unrestricted screen that contains non-sensitive instructions, if that meets your purpose.
Why the shortcut appears to do nothing
- Focus is elsewhere: a remote window, game, or full-screen app may consume the key combination. Test the home screen.
- Keyboard layout or function layer: use Snipping Tool or the Power-menu Screenshot command to avoid hardware-key variations.
- Output is transient: Print Screen may place the image only on the clipboard. Paste it before assuming the shot failed.
- Storage or permissions: check the screenshot album, Files app, cloud-sync folder, and available storage.
- Workplace management: a device policy can restrict capture even when the operating system shortcut is correct.
Mac and iPhone: keep the diagnosis narrow
The available Apple guidance relevant here concerns configurable screen-capture settings on iPhone. It does not establish a verified, Mac-specific repair for a shortcut that fails across applications. On a Mac, first test whether the failure is global or limited to one app, check the destination you normally use, and consult Apple Support for the exact macOS version and keyboard. Do not apply an iPhone setting as if it were a Mac fix.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Test a harmless screen. This establishes whether the operating system can capture at all.
- Use an alternate built-in method. On Windows, try Snipping Tool, Windows + Shift + S, and Print Screen. On Android, try Power + Volume Down and the Power-menu option.
- Check the result location. Look in the clipboard, Snipping Tool, Photos/Gallery, Files, and any configured cloud folder.
- Compare apps. If only a banking, password, streaming, enterprise, or managed app fails, treat it as a protection policy.
- Ask the control owner. Contact the phone maker for device-wide Android failures, the app developer for an app-only block, or your administrator for a managed session.
- Document the symptom safely. Record the device model, operating-system version, app name, and exact message without photographing confidential data.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Cause to check | Safe fix |
|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S has no visible result | Overlay did not open or notification was missed | Launch Snipping Tool from Start and inspect its window |
| Print Screen “failed” but paste works | Image went to the clipboard only | Paste into Paint or another image editor, then save |
| Android buttons fail everywhere | Model-specific shortcut, hardware issue, or system problem | Try the Power-menu Screenshot command and contact the manufacturer |
| Black image only in one Android app | FLAG_SECURE or an app policy |
Use an approved export or ask the app administrator |
| Remote content is absent from screenshots and screen sharing | Azure Virtual Desktop screen-capture protection | Request an administrator-approved workflow |
| Scrolling capture stops early | The screen does not expose a scrollable region or the app limits it | Capture several sections or use the app’s export function |
Or skip the browser setup
If the thing you need is a webpage rather than a phone or desktop app, ScreenshotNeo can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It is not a way around FLAG_SECURE, workplace controls, CAPTCHAs, or other restrictions on content you do not control. For ordinary public pages, it removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
See the full parameter list in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. This cURL example captures Stripe as WebP:

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API capture a locked banking or enterprise app?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures webpages supplied by URL; it does not bypass Android secure windows, device policies, Azure Virtual Desktop protection, or authentication controls.
What information should I give support when capture fails?
Report the device or session type, operating-system version, app or webpage name, whether a harmless screen captures correctly, the exact message, and where you looked for the output. Do not include passwords or confidential images.
Is a black screenshot always proof of DRM?
No. A protected Android window and a managed remote session are documented causes, but a rendering failure, unavailable remote content, or another app policy can produce a similar image.
