The $4.2 billion headline refers to a Forbes estimate from March 10, 2021, when Roblox began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Its shares closed their first day at $69.47, well above the $45 reference price, and Forbes estimated that the repricing lifted co-founder David Baszucki’s fortune by about $1.4 billion. That was an increase in estimated wealth tied to his holdings—not a $1.4 billion payment. Why did Baszucki’s estimated wealth jump?
Roblox completed a direct listing of its Class A common stock on March 10, 2021. The company’s shares entered public trading with a $45 reference price and closed that first day at $69.47—about 54% higher. Forbes used the market repricing to estimate that Baszucki’s fortune rose by approximately $1.4 billion, to $4.2 billion. Roblox’s annual-report materials document the listing; Forbes’ contemporaneous report gives the reference price, closing price and wealth estimate.
A direct listing makes existing shares available to trade publicly; unlike a conventional underwritten IPO, it is not primarily a sale of newly issued shares to raise capital for the company. The new public market price provided a visible way to value shares that had previously been harder to trade.

If a company’s public trading price is higher than the price implied by earlier private-market valuations, the estimated value of a founder’s stake can rise even if the founder sells no shares. The first-day close was what buyers and sellers agreed to at that moment, not a guarantee of the company’s lasting value.
Who is David Baszucki?
Baszucki is Roblox’s co-founder, president, CEO and a member of its board. He is also known on the platform by the username “builderman.” Roblox was founded in 2004 by Baszucki and Erik Cassel; the singular phrase “Roblox founder” often used in headlines leaves out Cassel, who died in 2013. Roblox’s board biography lists Baszucki’s current roles.

What does Roblox do, and how does its business work?
Roblox is a platform for user-created games and other interactive experiences, rather than a single game made by the company. Its ecosystem includes the Roblox Client, which people use to access experiences; Roblox Studio, which creators use to build and publish them; and Roblox Cloud, which supports the platform. Users spend Robux, Roblox’s virtual currency, on experiences and digital content, while creators can earn money from their work. Forbes’ Roblox company profile describes the platform and its products.
Roblox’s scale helps explain why investors paid attention to the platform, but user activity and company performance are not the same thing as Baszucki’s personal wealth. Forbes’ profile reported 83 million daily active users and more than 73 billion hours spent on Roblox in 2024, and said the company paid creators nearly $1 billion that year. Those are historical 2024 figures, not current metrics. In its 2025 disclosures, Roblox reported $4.9 billion in revenue and $6.8 billion in bookings for the year, and more than 144 million daily active users in the fourth quarter. Roblox’s 2026 proxy statement reports the 2025 figures.

Did Baszucki receive $1.4 billion in cash?
No. The $1.4 billion was Forbes’ estimate of an increase in his fortune as the market price of Roblox shares rose. It was not a salary, bonus, dividend or cash payout from Roblox. A rise in the quoted value of shares is often called paper wealth: it can change without a sale, and the holder receives cash only by selling shares. Any sale may be affected by taxes, trading rules and other restrictions.
Net worth and executive compensation are separate measures. Roblox’s 2026 proxy reports approximately $24.6 million in total compensation for Baszucki for 2025, largely reflecting stock awards and other compensation; its listed table reports no salary or bonus for him that year. That annual compensation figure is not the value of his stake or his total wealth. The proxy statement provides the compensation disclosure.

How exact is a billionaire net-worth estimate?
Forbes’ $4.2 billion figure was an estimate based substantially on the value of Baszucki’s Roblox holdings after the first day of trading—not an audited personal balance sheet. A public stock price makes one part of the calculation more visible, but a net-worth estimate can also depend on the shares attributed to a person, options, trusts, other assets and liabilities, and the publication’s methodology. Taxes and the ability to sell at a quoted price affect how much of a paper valuation could become spendable cash.

That is why the date matters. Forbes listed Baszucki at $3.5 billion as of July 28, 2026, compared with its March 2021 estimate of $4.2 billion. These are time-specific estimates and should not be treated as directly comparable audited totals: share prices, holdings and estimation methods can change. Forbes’ profile gives the later estimate.

Why voting control is not the same as wealth
Roblox has a dual-class share structure, meaning its share classes do not carry identical voting power. Economic ownership—the stake that contributes to the value of a person’s holdings—and voting ownership—the power to influence shareholder decisions—are related but distinct. Roblox’s 2025 Form 10-K warns that the structure concentrates voting control and can limit other shareholders’ influence on matters such as director elections and a change of control. This does not mean Baszucki owns all of Roblox; it means voting influence cannot be inferred from a net-worth estimate alone.
