PhantomJS output differs from Chrome and Firefox because it is not running the same browser engine. PhantomJS embeds QtWebKit, Chrome uses Blink, and Firefox uses Gecko. Their parsers, CSS implementations, JavaScript APIs, event loops, network stacks and graphics pipelines can all produce different DOM states and pixels from the same URL. Google describes the practical distinction directly: Phantom uses an older WebKit version, while Headless Chrome uses the latest Blink (Chrome for Developers).

There is no universal conversion switch that makes a PhantomJS screenshot identical to a current Chrome or Firefox capture. You can make comparisons useful by controlling the page state and capture environment, then running the final parity test in the browser you actually target. PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice (official project site), so it should generally be treated as a legacy compatibility target.

First define what “HTML output” means

People use “HTML output” for three different artifacts. Identify which one differs before changing code:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Serialized DOM: the markup returned by serializing the live document after scripts have modified it.
  • Computed layout: resolved styles, element rectangles, font metrics and visibility.
  • Painted output: the screenshot or PDF produced after layout is rasterized.

A page can have matching source HTML but different live DOM because a script, custom element or failed request took another branch. It can have matching DOM and computed styles but different pixels because font hinting, antialiasing or image decoding differs. Save all three layers when diagnosing a mismatch instead of comparing only the final image.

Different engines implement the web differently

Axis PhantomJS Chrome Firefox

Project status Development suspended (PhantomJS) Maintained browser; exact behavior depends on the installed build Maintained browser; exact behavior depends on the installed build
What can vary Parsing, CSS, JavaScript and Web API support, layout and Qt painting Blink layout, JavaScript and graphics stack Gecko layout, JavaScript and graphics stack

Engine names are not interchangeable feature labels. PhantomJS documentation warns that every WebKit implementation can vary because of its abstraction layers and recommends feature detection (supported web standards). A browser or WebKit version check is not proof that a particular API, CSS value or media feature behaves the same.

Parsing and DOM normalization

Malformed nesting, omitted end tags, table markup and unknown elements can be repaired differently by independent parsers. That changes node order, parentage and selectors before CSS is applied. If your application relies on invalid markup, first make the source valid; otherwise record the serialized DOM from each engine and compare the first divergent node.

CSS and layout support

Older WebKit may lack or partially implement newer layout and styling features. PhantomJS documentation specifically identifies unreliable or unsupported areas including WebGL, audio and video, plugins, CSS 3-D and some newer CSS capabilities (feature notes). Differences can appear as missing styles, fallback layout, incorrect intrinsic sizes, different line wrapping or invisible content. Use a feature test and a fallback rather than assuming a CSS property works because it works in Chrome.

JavaScript and Web APIs

Current sites commonly depend on APIs added after PhantomJS’s bundled WebKit. A missing API may throw an exception, select a fallback path or prevent the rest of a bundle from running. Even when an API exists, event ordering and promise, timer or mutation behavior can differ. Capture console exceptions and stop treating a page as ready merely because the initial load event fired.

Asynchronous state can differ before rendering starts

PhantomJS’s FAQ says its bundled WebKit requires tight, synchronous control over the event loop, network stack and JavaScript execution (FAQ). Modern applications continue changing after DOMContentLoaded: they fetch data, hydrate components, load fonts, decode images and remove placeholders. A fixed sleep can be too short for one run and unnecessarily long for another.

Typical causes of an early or different capture

  • An XHR or fetch failed, returned a different status, or was still pending.
  • A JavaScript exception stopped rendering logic in PhantomJS but not in Chrome or Firefox.
  • Fonts had not loaded, so fallback metrics changed line breaks and element heights.
  • Lazy images were outside the initial viewport and never requested.
  • Animations, timers or random data left the two captures at different frames.
  • A resource timeout caused PhantomJS to continue with missing CSS, images or scripts.

Define an application-ready signal in your page, wait for that signal, then separately verify fonts and critical images. Log console messages, failed requests, HTTP status codes and resource timing in every engine. This turns “the screenshot is different” into a specific missing resource or state transition.

  • Viewport: set explicit CSS width and height, not the window size you happen to get in headless mode.
  • Device scale: use the same device-pixel ratio; rounding at fractional scales changes borders and text placement.
  • Fonts: install identical font files and confirm that the intended family, weight and variation actually loaded.
  • Locale and timezone: dates, numbers, collation and conditional content can change.
  • User agent and media: responsive breakpoints and server-side markup may branch on them.
  • Images and background: wait for decoding and set an explicit background color. PhantomJS’s default page background can remain transparent (FAQ).
  • Network and security: use the same redirects, cookies, authentication, cache policy and resource timeouts.

PhantomJS exposes settings for JavaScript, images, user agent, security and resource timeout (settings API). Set them deliberately and record their values with each artifact.

Why matching DOM trees can still produce different screenshots

Screenshot rendering is a separate source of divergence. PhantomJS’s render API uses Qt’s QImage path for image output, except PDF (render documentation). Blink uses a different graphics stack, including Skia and platform APIs, while Gecko has its own layout and graphics pipeline (Blink overview; Gecko overview).

Consequently, identical boxes can show different font hinting, antialiasing, subpixel placement, SVG or canvas output, image decoding and color management. A one-pixel edge or a different glyph shape is not evidence that the DOM is wrong. For strict visual regression, compare within one pinned browser build and operating-system image; use cross-engine comparisons to find compatibility problems, not to demand pixel identity.

A reproducible comparison workflow

  1. Record versions. Save the PhantomJS version, exact Chrome or Firefox build, operating system, architecture and headless or GPU mode.
  2. Make inputs deterministic. Fix viewport, device scale, locale, timezone, user agent, cookies, feature flags, random seeds and network responses where practical.
  3. Prepare the page. Expose an application-ready marker after data, web components, fonts and critical images are complete. Freeze animations or capture at a named state.
  4. Capture diagnostics. Collect console errors, uncaught exceptions, failed requests, HTTP statuses, redirects and timeouts before saving output.
  5. Compare in layers. Diff serialized DOM first, then computed styles and bounding boxes, and only then screenshots. The first layer that diverges identifies the class of problem.
  6. Check feature assumptions. Use runtime feature detection and a fallback. PhantomJS explicitly recommends detection because WebKit implementations vary (documentation).
  7. Choose the reference engine. If the requirement is Chrome parity, run the acceptance capture in the matching maintained headless Chrome build. Do the equivalent with Firefox when Gecko is the target.

Troubleshooting common mismatches

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Styles are absent or only defaults appear CSS request failed, timed out, was blocked, or a script exception prevented insertion Log failed resources and console errors; verify status codes, certificates, redirects and the resource timeout; wait for the stylesheet before capture.
Text wraps onto different lines Different font file, weight, viewport, device scale or font-loading state Install identical fonts, set explicit metrics and viewport, wait for document.fonts readiness where available, and record the computed font family.
Images or lazy content are missing Capture occurred before decode, or content never entered the loading viewport Scroll or trigger the application’s lazy-load path, wait for critical image completion, and verify request logs.
Modern components are blank Unsupported Web API, custom-element failure or JavaScript exception in old WebKit Add feature detection and a fallback, inspect console output, or test the component in a maintained target browser.
DOM matches but pixels differ Qt versus Blink/Gecko rasterization, fonts, color profile or device-pixel rounding Compare computed geometry first; standardize fonts, scale and color settings. Do not use a cross-engine pixel diff as the sole pass/fail test.
Results change between runs Timers, animation, random data, network races or cache state Freeze time and animation, seed randomness, control responses and wait for an explicit ready marker rather than a guessed delay.

When to retire PhantomJS from a parity test

PhantomJS remains useful when you must reproduce a legacy QtWebKit environment, but it is a poor oracle for a current Chrome or Firefox product. The project homepage states that development is suspended (PhantomJS), and its engine cannot acquire the continuously updated web-platform and security behavior of maintained browsers. Keep a PhantomJS job only when legacy compatibility is a stated requirement; otherwise move the reference and visual-regression jobs to the browser your users run.

Or skip the browser setup

For a clean, repeatable website capture without maintaining a local browser, ScreenshotNeo provides a GET endpoint and an MCP server for AI clients. The endpoint accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled.

Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
