Edge’s Screenshot (formerly Web Capture) is designed to capture the entire document, including content below the viewport. When an image stops at what you can see, the usual causes are an internal scrollbar, the wrong capture mode, an administrator policy, an unsupported platform, or protected content—not a normal limitation of full-page capture.
What Edge full-page capture is supposed to do
Microsoft describes Screenshot as a way to capture “a screenshot of a full webpage, even the parts you would have to scroll to see.” In desktop Edge, open the Settings and more menu, choose Screenshot (also called Web Capture in some versions), and select Capture full page. The result should include the document below the visible viewport.
Availability is not identical everywhere. Microsoft says Screenshot functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version. The WebCaptureEnabled policy documentation lists support for Windows and macOS Edge 87 or later, and explicitly lists Android and iOS as unsupported for this feature.
Why Edge captures only the visible area
The scrollbar belongs to a panel or frame
This is the most common explanation on dashboards, embedded viewers, chat applications, document readers, and layouts with a fixed sidebar. The browser may be showing a page whose body is short while a nested element has its own overflow: auto scrollbar. A support discussion in the Microsoft Community describes the limitation this way: full-page capture works when scrolling is positioned in the page body; if scrolling occurs in another element, such as a sidebar or frame, the capture does not include that element’s full content.

Look at the scrollbar while moving through the missing material. If the thumb is inside a panel rather than at the far right edge of the browser window, Edge’s document-level capture is not controlling the relevant scroll region.
You selected area capture instead of full-page capture
Capture area records a rectangle in the current viewport. It does not continue down the document. Reopen Screenshot with Ctrl+Shift+S and choose Capture full page, not the area option.
The command is disabled or missing
On a managed computer, an administrator can disable Screenshot with the WebCaptureEnabled policy. Microsoft’s policy documentation says that disabling it removes access to the feature. A missing menu item or shortcut on an otherwise supported desktop installation is therefore a policy issue to investigate, not proof that the page is too long.
The page is protected against screenshots
Some business, banking, medical, and confidential corporate pages are covered by screenshot-prevention controls. A W3C TPAC 2024 presentation describing Edge for Business policies says that a blocked desktop capture can appear as a black screen. A black result is consequently different from a capture that merely ends at the fold: it may be an intentional security response.
Platform or version differences
Microsoft warns that features and functionality can change. A control visible on Windows or macOS may not appear on mobile, and a browser update or regional rollout can change the menu labels. Confirm the operating system and Edge version before comparing results with another computer.

Diagnose the failure before changing settings
- Use desktop Edge on Windows or macOS and check that Screenshot/Web Capture appears in the menu or opens with Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose Capture full page. If you choose Capture area, only the current viewport is expected.
- Identify the active scrollbar. A browser-edge scrollbar usually means the document owns the scroll; a scrollbar inside a card, sidebar, frame, or viewer indicates a nested scroll container.
- Check the output. A clean cutoff at a panel boundary points to nested scrolling; a completely black image points more toward screenshot-prevention policy.
- If the command itself is absent on a work device, ask the administrator whether WebCaptureEnabled or a screenshot-prevention policy is active.
Fixes that use Edge’s built-in tools
Capture the document body
- Open the target page in desktop Edge.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or open Settings and more and choose Screenshot/Web Capture.
- Select Capture full page.
- Save or copy the result and inspect the bottom as well as the top. If the missing content lives inside a panel, repeat the test with the panel’s scrollbar visible so you can confirm which element owns scrolling.
Use DevTools for a technically difficult page
Edge’s documented built-in fallback is DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot command. Open DevTools, open its command menu, and run that command. It is intended to capture the full page, including content outside the viewport, and is the most relevant fallback when the ordinary Screenshot command produces an incomplete document.
DevTools still cannot override a site’s security policy. If the result remains black, treat that as protection rather than a rendering defect. If a nested application still omits its internal panel, capture the panel separately or use the application’s own export function; Edge’s document screenshot does not turn every independently scrolling widget into one continuous document.
When you cannot change the policy
Do not try to bypass a corporate screenshot-prevention control. Ask the administrator for an approved export or capture workflow. On a personal device, confirm that the page is not a protected banking, medical, or confidential workspace before treating a black result as a browser bug.

Troubleshooting checklist
“Screenshot” is not in the menu
Verify desktop Windows or macOS, check the Edge version, and test Ctrl+Shift+S. If the command is still absent on a managed computer, ask whether WebCaptureEnabled is disabled.
The image ends at the bottom of a dashboard card
The card probably owns the scrollbar. Edge’s full-page command follows the document body, not every nested scroll region. Use the dashboard’s export option, capture the panel separately, or try DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot.

The bottom of a normal article is missing
Reopen Screenshot and select Capture full page. If that still fails, use DevTools’ full-size command and check whether the article is inside an embedded frame.
The result is black
Check for a screenshot-prevention policy or protected banking, medical, or corporate content. A black result can be intentional. Contact the site or device administrator instead of attempting to bypass the control.
The shortcut works on one device but not another
Compare operating system, Edge version, market, and administrator policy. Microsoft explicitly warns that Screenshot availability and behavior can vary across those conditions.
