The most likely reason The Sims 4 stops working after an update is an incompatible Mod or Custom Content item. Updates can change the game systems that third-party files rely on, so EA disables Mods after patches as a precaution. However, damaged game files, corrupted saves, launcher problems, cloud-sync conflicts, drivers, and genuine patch bugs can cause similar symptoms.
Start with reversible tests: remove Mods and CC, delete the Sims 4 cache, repair or verify the installation, and test a new save. Back up your Sims 4 user folder before resetting or deleting anything.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Write down the exact symptom and error message.
- Close the game and move the entire
Modsfolder out ofDocuments > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. - Delete
localthumbcache.packagefrom that folder. - Restart the game, launcher, and computer.
- Repair the game in the EA app, or verify its files in Steam.
- Test a new save before opening your main save.
- Back up and reset the Sims 4 user folder only if the problem continues.
Do not reinstall immediately. Reinstallation replaces core game files, but it does not necessarily fix a broken Mod, damaged save, launcher cache, or patch-specific defect.
Match the fix to the symptom

1. Remove Mods and Custom Content first
EA explains that Mods may become incompatible when a patch changes interfaces, tuning, scripts, object data, animations, or other internal systems. Some Mods need a complete reinstall from their creator rather than a simple replacement. A file that worked before yesterday’s update is not automatically safe after it.

Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. - Move the entire
Modsfolder to the desktop or another backup location. Do not merely disable individual files. - Delete
localthumbcache.package. - Launch the game with Mods disabled.
- Test the Main Menu, a new household, Live Mode, Build Mode, and saving.
Use a new test save while diagnosing the problem. Do not save a Mod-dependent household or lot over your original save in a stripped-down state unless you understand what content may be removed or replaced.
EA’s official guidance is to confirm that the game works without Mods, check creators for compatible versions, and then re-enable content cautiously. EA does not pre-screen, endorse, or support specific Mods or CC, so download updates only from trusted creators or sources.
Find the incompatible file with 50/50 testing
If the game works without Mods and CC, that confirms a third-party compatibility problem, although not necessarily one particular file. Check creator update notes first, especially for script and gameplay Mods. Remove duplicate files and old versions, then:

- Launch and test the same action.
- If it fails, divide that half again. If it works, test the other half.
- Continue dividing the failing group until you identify the file or small group responsible.
Test gameplay Mods separately from ordinary CC. CC can still cause CAS, Build Mode, household, or lot-loading failures even when the game itself launches normally.
If the game still fails after the entire Mods folder is removed and the cache is deleted, Mods are less likely to be the immediate cause. A save, Tray item, installation, launcher, or wider patch problem may still be involved.
2. Clear the right cache
Sims 4 cache
Deleting localthumbcache.package is a low-risk cache refresh. It does not delete saved games, households, installed packs, or Mods. The game rebuilds cached information when it starts again.

It will not normally repair a broken Mod, damaged save, missing installation file, incompatible driver, hardware problem, server outage, or bug introduced by the patch.
EA app cache
If the EA app is stuck, offline, unable to update, or showing a game as missing from the Library:
- Open the EA app.
- Open the menu.
- Select Help.
- Select App recovery.
- Choose Clear cache.
On Windows, if the EA app will not open, launch App Recovery from the EA folder in the Start menu. EA says this can help with stuck downloads, offline-mode problems, updates stuck at a percentage, and games missing from the Library. It cannot fix an actual EA server outage; check EA’s cache guidance and service-status information when the launcher remains unavailable.
After clearing the cache, restart the EA app and computer. Confirm that you are signed into the account that owns the game. If you own the Steam version, launch it through Steam rather than treating every EA app message as a damaged Sims installation.
3. Repair or verify the installation
EA app
Use:
EA app > Library > The Sims 4 > Manage > Repair
Steam
Use:
Steam Library > right-click The Sims 4 > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files

If repair changes nothing, that does not prove the game is healthy: repair addresses installation files only. Reinstalling is a later option for a badly damaged installation, not a guaranteed solution. It can be slow and data-intensive while leaving the real problem in the user folder or launcher.
4. Test a new save and another household
A working Main Menu does not mean every save, lot, world, or household is healthy. After removing Mods and clearing the cache, create a new test save and try a different world and household.
- New save also crashes: suspect installation, launcher, drivers, security software, system resources, or a patch-wide issue.
- New save works but the old save fails: the old save or content referenced by it may be damaged or incompatible.
- Only one household or lot fails: a CC object, household, lot, or save-specific problem is more likely.
Do not save over the original problem save while testing. If the old save fails, restore saves from a backup one at a time and test after each addition, following EA’s save-recovery guidance.

This is the strongest diagnostic test after vanilla testing, but it must be done safely. The user folder contains local saves, Mods, CC, screenshots, Tray content, and other personal files.
Back up first
- Open
Documents. - Open
Electronic Arts. - Copy the entire
The Sims 4folder to the desktop or another safe location. - Rename the copy, such as
Sims 4 Backup.
Run the reset test
- Remove the original
The Sims 4folder fromDocuments > Electronic Arts, or move it somewhere safe rather than permanently deleting it. - Restart the computer.
- Launch the game.
- Test without saves, Mods, CC, screenshots, or Gallery-installed user content.
If the game works with the fresh folder, the cause is probably inside the old user data. If it still fails, the installation, launcher, operating system, drivers, security software, permissions, or a broader game issue is more likely.

Restore folders one at a time, testing after each change:

If restoring saves causes the failure, copy save files individually from the backup and test each one. Do not delete the backup until the game and saves are confirmed to work.

6. Troubleshoot long-session crashes and freezing
A crash at launch differs from a freeze after an hour of play. Later failures can involve memory use, large or old saves, high-resolution CC, background applications, graphics drivers, insufficient free storage, or a patch-specific performance regression.
Install the graphics driver recommended for your operating system and hardware, temporarily disable overlays and unnecessary background tools, and test with Mods and CC removed. Avoid changing several variables at once so you can tell which test mattered.
EA’s July 21, 2026 update lists Memory Boost improvements across PC, Mac, and console, along with save and stability changes. The accompanying notes describe improvements rather than a universal guarantee; results can vary by hardware, save size, packs, and play session.

PlayStation and Xbox players do not use the PC/Mac Mods folder, so Mod testing and localthumbcache.package deletion do not apply.
- Fully close the game and restart the console.
- Confirm that the update completed successfully.
- Check for a second pending game or pack update.
- Test another save if possible.
- Do not delete local saves unless you understand the platform’s cloud or external-backup status.
- If multiple saves crash, check official EA and platform support.
EA’s July 21, 2026 notes list console version 2.36. Later updates may supersede it, so compare your installed version with the official Sims 4 news and patch-note index.

8. Could the update itself be broken?
Yes. Not every post-update failure is caused by a player’s files. Suspect a wider patch issue when:
- Mods and CC are removed.
- The installation is repaired or verified.
- A fresh user folder is used.
- A new save fails.
- Multiple unrelated worlds and households show the same behavior.
- Other players report the same symptom after the same patch.
- EA acknowledges it in patch notes, a Laundry List, or an official forum thread.
Record the exact game version and search the official patch pages and EA Forums issue discussions before making destructive changes. Recent official updates have addressed reported stability, save, Gallery, console, notification, and performance problems, so a clean installation can still be affected by a genuine post-patch defect.
For reference, EA’s July 21, 2026 update listed PC version 1.126.58.1030, Mac version 1.126.58.1230, and console version 2.36. These numbers are date-specific and may no longer be current after a later patch.

Contact support or report the issue in the relevant EA forum when the game still fails with a clean user folder, no Mods or CC, repaired files, and a new save. Provide:
- Platform and operating system
- EA app or Steam
- Exact game version
- Exact error text
- Whether the game reaches the Main Menu
- Whether a new save works
- Whether Mods and CC were removed
- Which world, household, pack, or action triggers the failure
- Whether the problem occurs immediately or after a long session
“The update broke my game” is difficult to diagnose. A reproducible description—such as “the game reaches the Main Menu, but every household crashes in a fresh user folder on PC version X”—is much more useful.
