If the Apple TV app will not open, sign in, or play a video, the cause may be an Apple service outage, your connection, outdated device software, an account or subscription mismatch, or a problem with one title or channel. Check Apple’s service status first, then compare the same content on another device or network before deleting the app or resetting anything.
One important distinction: the Apple TV app is a storefront and viewing app for Apple Originals, rentals, purchases, Apple TV Channels, and some third-party services. Apple TV+ is Apple’s subscription service; having it does not automatically include every channel, rental, or purchase shown in the app.
Quick checks before changing settings
- Check Apple System Status. Look for Apple TV and, if relevant, Apple Account, Subscription Purchase, or Apple TV Channels.
- Open a website on the affected device, then test another device on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Try the same title on another supported device or network, such as cellular data or another Wi-Fi connection.
- Install available app and device software updates, then restart the device. Restart the router too if other services are having trouble.
- Confirm you are signed in with the Apple Account that holds the relevant subscription or purchase.
- Try a different title. If only one show, movie, or channel fails, investigate its availability or entitlement rather than assuming the whole app is broken.
Apple’s streaming troubleshooting guidance recommends checking service status, updating software, testing another device and connection speed, restarting equipment, and checking simultaneous-streaming limits. If Apple reports an outage, waiting and trying again later is usually safer than repeatedly changing passwords or resetting devices. A green status indicator is useful but cannot rule out every regional, account-specific, or newly developing issue.

Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What happens | Check first |
|---|---|
| The app will not open or stays on a loading screen | Device updates, app state, supported-device status, and Apple service status |
| The app opens but is blank or will not connect | Internet access, VPN or security filtering, date and time, and Apple service status |
| Sign-in repeats or fails | Correct Apple Account, password and verification, device authorization, and service status |
| No subscription appears | Account used to subscribe, subscription status, billing source, and regional availability |
| A video buffers or freezes | Wi-Fi quality, network congestion, router, ISP, and whether other devices also buffer |
| Only one title or channel fails | Title availability, purchase authorization, download state, or the channel provider |
| It works on a phone but not a TV | TV firmware, app compatibility, TV app update, and the TV’s network connection |
| Audio plays but video is black | Display, DRM, cable or external-monitor setup, graphics driver, or browser issue |
Check whether Apple TV is down
Visit Apple’s live System Status page before reinstalling the app, changing account settings, or resetting hardware. Check Apple TV for playback problems; check Apple Account or Subscription Purchase if sign-in or subscribing is involved; and check Apple TV Channels if a channel is affected. Status can vary by region, and an outage may not appear immediately. Apple advises trying again later if connection troubleshooting does not help (Apple connection guidance).

If other people in the household encounter the same failure at the same time, that is a useful clue, but not proof of an outage: a shared router, account entitlement, or ISP issue can affect several devices too.
Test the connection, not just the speed
- Open a normal website on the affected device. Then try another device on the same network.
- Try the Apple TV app over a different Wi-Fi network, cellular data, or Ethernet if available.
- Pause large downloads, game updates, video calls, or other heavy network use and test again.
- Move closer to the Wi-Fi router, or use a wired connection if practical. Power-cycle the router if several apps or devices are affected.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN, filtering service, firewall, or third-party security tool for a test, if it is safe to do so; restore your usual protection afterward.
Apple cites about 8 Mbit/s or faster for HD streaming (Apple’s streaming guidance). Treat that as a stated minimum, not a guarantee: a speed test cannot rule out packet loss, interference, latency, router faults, congestion, or poor routing to a particular service. If other apps work but Apple TV does not, that does not by itself prove your internet connection is healthy for Apple’s playback route.
Update the app and device
- iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV: install available iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or tvOS updates. Apple’s built-in apps are updated through the operating system.
- Windows: update Windows and relevant device drivers, then update Apple TV from Microsoft Store.
- Android: install Android updates and update Apple TV through Google Play.
- Smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles: install available device firmware and app updates. The manufacturer may control these updates, and app availability depends on model and region.
Apple lists the app across Apple devices, Android, PC, select smart TVs, streaming platforms, and game consoles, but that does not mean every model is supported (Apple TV app availability). If the app disappeared or stopped being compatible, check the device maker’s support information before assuming a reinstall will restore support.
Restart before reinstalling
Restart the affected phone, tablet, computer, console, TV, or streaming device. For a TV or streaming box, fully power the device off and back on; changing the television’s input does not restart the streaming device. If the wider network is failing, restart the router as well.

Reinstalling may help if the app itself is corrupted or unresponsive, but it will not fix an outage, weak Wi-Fi, an account entitlement, or an unsupported device. It can remove local downloads and require you to sign in again, so first make sure you know which Apple Account you use. A factory reset is a last resort: it can erase settings, accounts, downloads, and device configuration without addressing an Apple-side or subscription problem.
Verify the Apple Account and what you are trying to watch
Check that the signed-in Apple Account is the one associated with the subscription or purchase. An account may be signed out after an update or device change; password verification or two-factor authentication may also be required. If sign-in itself fails, follow Apple’s account recovery or verification-code steps referenced in its troubleshooting guidance.
- Apple TV app: the app can show Apple Originals as well as rentals, purchases, Apple TV Channels, and integrations with other services.
- Apple TV subscription: covers Apple’s own subscription programming, subject to availability and account status.
- Apple TV Channels: separately billed channel subscriptions accessed through the app.
- Third-party services: may appear in the app but can require their own subscription or account.
Therefore, a subscription message may indicate the wrong account, an expired or canceled plan, pending billing, a subscription billed through another provider, or an expectation that a channel or rental is included. Availability and features can vary by country or region. Do not buy or restart a subscription until you have identified what entitlement the particular title requires.
If playback fails only when several people are watching, check whether the relevant subscription or channel has reached its simultaneous-streaming limit. Limits depend on the service and plan; do not assume one universal device count.

When one movie, show, or channel is the only problem
Play another title, then try the affected title on another device using the same account. If other content works, the issue may be title-specific: regional rights, a temporary content problem, rental or purchase authorization, a corrupted download, or a third-party channel outage. A channel inside the Apple TV app is not necessarily operated or supported by Apple in every part of its playback and billing.
If a download fails but streaming works, check available storage, account authorization, and any download restrictions. If streaming fails but a supported download completes and plays, the network path may be involved. Apple recommends trying a download on devices that support it as one troubleshooting step (Apple guidance).
For a purchased movie or show that still cannot be accessed, use Apple’s problem-reporting and refund site where appropriate. For a separately billed channel, contact the channel provider if its service or entitlement appears to be the failing part.
Check date, time, VPN, and security filtering
Incorrect system date, time, or time zone can interfere with secure connections to Apple services. Set them to update automatically. Apple’s connection troubleshooting also recommends checking internet access, testing another device, temporarily removing VPN or third-party security interference for diagnosis, restarting the router, updating software, and trying another network. On a managed work or school network, ask its administrator before changing firewall or filtering settings.

Platform-specific checks
iPhone and iPad
Update iOS or iPadOS, restart the device, and compare Wi-Fi playback with cellular playback. If using cellular data, confirm it is enabled for the Apple TV app in Settings; Apple’s connection guidance calls out mobile data access for affected apps. Sign out and back in only after confirming the correct account, and reinstall only if the app remains corrupted or unresponsive.
Mac
Update macOS and restart. Check VPN, firewall, DNS, and security software if Apple services will not connect. Compare playback in the Apple TV app with tv.apple.com in a browser; one working while the other fails helps isolate an app or browser-specific issue, though it does not prove the account is fault-free.
Windows PC
Update Windows, graphics or other relevant device drivers, and Apple TV through Microsoft Store, then restart. Compare the app with browser playback. If sound plays but the picture is black, check graphics drivers, the browser, DRM compatibility, and any external monitor or display connection. Apple specifically advises Windows users to update Windows, device drivers, and the app through Microsoft Store (Apple guidance).

Smart TV, streaming device, or game console
Fully restart the device, install pending firmware, and allow the Apple TV app to update. Check the manufacturer’s support page for model compatibility and update instructions. Compare with a supported phone, computer, or browser before considering a factory reset. Apple notes that compatible TV and streaming-device apps generally update automatically, but manufacturer support may be needed (Apple guidance).
When to contact support
| Likely source of the issue | Contact |
|---|---|
| Apple Account, Apple TV subscription, Apple-hosted content, or Apple TV app failure across devices | Apple Support |
| TV, console, or streaming device firmware, compatibility, or app installation | Device manufacturer |
| Several services or devices fail on the same internet connection | Internet provider or network administrator |
| One separately billed channel or provider’s catalog fails | That channel or service provider |
| Purchased content remains unavailable | Apple’s problem-reporting site, or Apple Support |
Before contacting support, note the device model and operating-system version, app version if visible, exact error message, when the problem began, whether all titles or just one fail, whether another device or network works, and how the subscription is billed. This information helps separate device, network, account, and content issues.
A new streaming device is worth considering only if comparison tests show the existing TV or player is unsupported, no longer updated, or consistently the bottleneck. New hardware will not fix an Apple outage, account mismatch, subscription entitlement, ISP problem, or regional content restriction.
