Steam says it sends Steam Guard email codes immediately, but your email provider can delay or filter delivery. First check the last email address registered to your Steam account, search spam and quarantine folders, and confirm that Steam Guard is not configured for the Steam Mobile app instead. Then wait up to 30 minutes, make one fresh login attempt, and use only the newest code.
1. Confirm whether Steam Guard uses email or the mobile app
Steam Guard can protect a new-device login with either an email code or the Steam Mobile authenticator. If the authenticator is enabled, no email may be expected.
On a trusted Steam session, open Steam > Settings > Security > Manage Steam Guard. Client labels can vary slightly by platform or version, so look for Security and Manage Steam Guard. If the settings button is missing, completely exit Steam, reopen it, sign in again, and check once more. A restart refreshes missing client settings; it does not guarantee that delayed email will arrive.

2. Check the right email address
According to Steam’s Steam Guard Code Help, the message goes to the last email address registered on the account. That may differ from the address used when you created Steam, an address remembered from years ago, or the account currently open in your mail app.
Check every potentially associated mailbox, including an old provider, a secondary account, a forwarding destination, and any workplace or school address. An alias may deliver into another mailbox rather than having its own inbox.
3. Search every folder and allow Steam senders
Search your mail service for terms such as Steam Guard, Steam, verification, and access code. Also search for these official sender addresses:

Check Spam or Junk, Promotions, Updates, Other, archive, trash, and any mail-server quarantine or security dashboard. Review blocked-sender lists and rules that automatically archive or delete messages, and make sure the mailbox is not over its storage limit. Add the two addresses above to trusted senders, then request a new code.
A familiar-looking sender is not proof that a message is genuine. Steam warns that you should not enter your password or authenticator code on a site that is not operated by Valve.
4. Wait 30 minutes, then make one fresh login attempt
Steam’s dedicated code-help page says to wait up to 30 minutes, then try signing in again to generate a new email. Steam’s broader Steam Guard FAQ gives a longer threshold of three hours before contacting support. Because the official pages differ, use this practical sequence:

- Check the correct mailbox and all filtering locations.
- Wait 30 minutes.
- Make one new login attempt and wait for that message.
- If no message appears after several hours, escalate through Steam Support.
Do not repeatedly press resend in rapid succession. Steam says only the most recent code works. If several delayed messages arrive, use the newest one; an earlier code can fail even if it arrives later.

5. Try the official website or client, but do not expect a bypass
You can use the official Steam website or desktop client to make a fresh sign-in attempt. Changing clients may help you start a clean login request, but it does not bypass Steam Guard: the account still uses its configured authenticator and registered email.
There is no Steam-supported evidence that changing DNS, using a VPN, reinstalling Steam, disabling antivirus, or downloading a “Steam email fixer” repairs email delivery. A VPN can also make a login appear to come from an unusual location, potentially complicating security checks.

6. Recover the account when the email is inaccessible or changed
If you no longer control the registered mailbox, ordinary inbox troubleshooting cannot solve the problem. Use Steam’s official recovery flow and be prepared to provide proof of ownership. Start at Steam Guard Code Help or the lost-authenticator recovery page.
An unexpected account-email change, unfamiliar login, or missing security notice can indicate a possible compromise. Do not state that the account was hacked without evidence, but treat those signs urgently: visit help.steampowered.com directly, change the email account password if it may be exposed, and avoid links sent through chat or social media.

7. Avoid fake support and unsafe fixes
- Never give a stranger your Steam Guard, authenticator, SMS-recovery, or backup code.
- Do not enter credentials on non-Valve websites.
- Do not install software claiming to repair Steam email or remove Steam Guard.
- Use Steam Support directly instead of “recovery” services advertised in Discord, forums, or social media.
Steam says its support staff will not ask for your password or mobile-authenticator code. More safety guidance is available in the Steam Mobile Authenticator FAQ.
Quick diagnostic checklist
- Confirmed whether the account uses email Steam Guard or the mobile authenticator.
- Checked the last email address registered to the account.
- Searched spam, quarantine, archive, trash, and filtered tabs.
- Trusted
[email protected]and[email protected]. - Waited 30 minutes before one fresh login attempt.
- Used only the newest code received.
- Restarted Steam if Security or Manage Steam Guard was missing.
- Started official recovery if the email was inaccessible or changed.
The Bottom Line
Most missing Steam Guard emails are explained by the wrong registered mailbox, filtering, provider delay, mobile-authenticator settings, or an older code being used. Check those in order, request only one fresh code, and move to official Steam recovery if the address is inaccessible or appears to have changed.
