If your Steam Deck stops charging at 80% or another consistent percentage, check for a charge limit before assuming the battery is faulty. A plugged-in Deck can also run from the charger without adding charge to the battery, especially when a game is demanding more power than the adapter supplies. Start with the power setting and a direct-wall charger test; investigate the battery or port only if those checks do not explain it.
First: identify what the percentage is telling you
The symptom points to the likely cause:

1. Check the SteamOS charge limit
SteamOS introduced a Battery Charge Limit control in the SteamOS 3.7.7 Beta announcement. Valve described an 80% ceiling as potentially useful for long-term battery health when a Deck is often docked or rarely discharged. That does not mean every Deck has the feature: availability and labels can differ by SteamOS channel and version. See Valve’s SteamOS 3.7.7 Beta announcement.
- Open Settings and select Power.
- Look for Battery Charge Limit or the equivalent control.
- If you want a full charge, disable the limit or set it to 100%.
- Disconnect and reconnect the charger, then leave the Deck idle for several minutes and check whether the percentage rises.
If the control is missing, your SteamOS version or channel may not expose it. Beta and Preview interfaces can change. Also check whether a third-party tool such as Decky Loader’s PowerTools has set a battery limit; community reports describe conflicts, but that behavior is not established as official Valve guidance. Change one control at a time, then restart and retest.
An 80% ceiling trades some unplugged runtime for a charging pattern Valve says may benefit long-term battery health in frequently docked use. If you need the Deck’s maximum runtime now, raising the limit is reasonable; neither choice by itself indicates a fault.

2. Test the power source without a dock or game load
The included Steam Deck adapter is rated at 45 W. A compatible third-party USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger can also work, but the number printed on an adapter alone does not guarantee compatible power delivery: the cable, adapter, outlet, and any dock or hub all matter. Valve lists the included adapter in its Steam Deck technical specifications.
- Connect the charger directly to a known-good wall outlet.
- Remove the dock, hub, monitor, extension, and power bank from the charging path.
- Use the original adapter and cable if available. Otherwise, test a known-good USB-C PD charger and suitable cable.
- Leave the Deck idle, or shut it down, and give it several minutes before judging the result.
A phone charger or a monitor’s USB-C port may provide enough power to run some functions but not enough to replenish the battery under load. A demanding game can use much of the incoming power, making the percentage rise very slowly or not at all. If it charges while shut down but not while gaming, insufficient power under load is one possibility—not proof that the battery is defective. iFixit’s Steam Deck not-charging guide also identifies inadequate power as a cause of slow or ineffective charging.

If one cable or adapter works and another does not, the failed accessory is the likely culprit. Do not buy a higher-wattage charger solely because charging stops at 80%; that symptom points first to a limit setting.

3. Restart, update, and compare battery status
Restart the Deck and install any pending SteamOS updates through the normal system update screen. Then compare what Game Mode and Desktop Mode report; a display that has not refreshed or a software state that is stuck can make the percentage or charging label misleading.

- Switch to Desktop Mode.
- Select the battery icon in the lower-right system tray.
- Note the reported charge, battery health, and whether the Deck says it is charging, discharging, or using external power.
- Compare those details with Game Mode.
The health figure is a software estimate, not a conclusive battery test. A healthy-looking value does not rule out a bad cable, port, controller, or battery; a low value should be considered alongside runtime and other symptoms. The iFixit troubleshooting guide describes this Desktop Mode check.
4. Inspect the cable and USB-C port
Check that the plug seats securely and does not disconnect when touched lightly. Look for visible debris, corrosion, a loose-feeling port, or connector damage. A dock or hub can be the weak link even if its wall adapter has a high advertised wattage.

If you can see loose lint at the port opening, disconnect power and remove it gently with a nonmetallic tool. Do not use a metal pin, force an object into the port, or scrape the contacts. Stop if the port is loose, visibly damaged, or corroded. The USB-C port carries charging power, and iFixit notes that it is soldered to the board rather than being a simple modular replacement; damage may require board-level repair.

5. Try Battery Storage Mode as a charging-state reset
After checking the limit and power source, Battery Storage Mode can be a reasonable reset for a stuck charging state. It is a BIOS storage and repair mode—not a guaranteed battery calibration procedure.

- Shut the Deck down completely.
- Hold Volume Up (+) and press Power to enter BIOS.
- Open the battery-related menu and select Battery Storage Mode.
- Once the Deck enters that mode, connect the charger to exit it and start the system.
Do not mistake the Deck’s lack of a normal power-button response in Storage Mode for a dead device: it needs external power to wake or exit. For the procedure and its storage purpose, see iFixit’s Battery Storage Mode guide.
Storage Mode is not the same as calibration. No universal Valve-published drain-and-recharge calibration sequence is established here. Repeatedly draining the battery to zero is not good routine battery care, will not repair a worn battery, and is especially unhelpful if the Deck shuts down unexpectedly.
6. Know when to stop troubleshooting
Arrange support or qualified repair if the Deck still will not charge with known-good power equipment, if it shuts off immediately when unplugged, or if it cannot run from its battery. A persistently frozen percentage, unusually short runtime, or substantially degraded reported health may also warrant service after basic checks. LCD and OLED models share this broad diagnostic sequence, but their parts and repair instructions are not necessarily interchangeable.
Possible battery swelling is a safety issue. Warning signs can include a bowed or separating enclosure, unusual screen discoloration, or pressure from inside the case. If you see bulging or separation, stop charging and using the Deck. Do not press, bend, puncture, or open a potentially swollen lithium battery; keep the device away from heat and combustible materials, and contact Valve or a qualified repair provider.
Contact Valve Support if the Deck may be under warranty, if multiple known-good chargers and cables fail, or if the port, battery, or board may need repair. Avoid opening the unit if you are not equipped to work safely around an internal lithium battery. iFixit’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes possible charger, battery, port, software, and motherboard causes; its repair directory provides model-specific repair information.
