Gaming makes your CPU and GPU work harder, so higher temperatures and louder fans are usually normal. It is more likely a real overheating problem if heat is sustained and comes with falling clock speeds or frame rates, repeated crashes, or shutdowns—or if a component exceeds the limit specified for that exact model. There is no single temperature that proves every computer is overheating.
To diagnose it, check CPU and GPU sensors while the problem happens, then look for airflow or workload issues before changing hardware or opening the computer.
Normal heat or a real overheating problem?
A brief temperature spike when a game loads, shaders compile, or the scene changes is less concerning than sustained heat accompanied by performance loss. Modern processors can reduce their clock speed when they reach a thermal limit; that protective behavior is called thermal throttling. You may notice stuttering or declining FPS after several minutes rather than an immediate shutdown.

A hot laptop chassis or loud fan is not enough to diagnose overheating. Temperature depends on the component, workload, room temperature, fan mode, and sensor being reported. A GPU core, GPU hotspot or junction, and GPU memory can all show different readings. Check the specification or support guidance for your exact CPU, GPU, or computer model instead of relying on a generic rule such as “over 80°C is dangerous.” Intel likewise directs users to the relevant processor’s own thermal specification.

Symptoms that point to a thermal problem
| What you notice | What it may mean |
|---|---|
| Fans get loud only while gaming | Often normal: the cooling system is responding to a demanding workload. |
| FPS falls or stuttering begins after several minutes | Possible thermal throttling or a power limit. Check temperature and clock behavior together. |
| CPU or GPU clock drops as its temperature reaches its limit | Strong evidence of throttling, though the exact limit is component-specific. |
| The game crashes or the PC restarts under load | Could be heat, but an unstable overclock, driver problem, RAM fault, power-supply issue, or other hardware fault can look similar. |
| The PC shuts down suddenly during sustained play | Possible emergency thermal protection or power-delivery problem; repeated shutdowns call for service. |
| A fan stays silent while the system is hot | Possible fan failure or a fan-control/firmware problem. |
| Temperatures are high even at idle | Check background activity, blocked airflow, fan operation, cooler contact, and software. |
| GPU core looks reasonable but hotspot or memory is much hotter | Sensor readings differ; a large or unexpected disparity may warrant checking airflow, heatsink contact, or service guidance for the GPU. |
| The issue began after a repair or repaste | Possible incorrect mounting, displaced thermal pads, or a fan/cable disturbed during reassembly. |
One peak reading does not establish sustained overheating. Correlate temperature, utilization, clock speed, power, fan speed, and performance over time. A GPU at 100% utilization in a demanding game is often working as intended; it is not by itself a fault.
Check the CPU and GPU while the problem is happening
Monitoring the desktop after quitting a game can miss the important part. Observe sensors during the actual game and, if possible, note what changes at the moment FPS drops or the system becomes unstable.
- Download HWiNFO from its official site and open its sensor view. HWiNFO 64 is free for personal, non-commercial use according to its license information.
- Watch or log CPU temperature and maximum, effective clock, and package power. For the GPU, check temperature, hotspot/junction and memory temperature if exposed, utilization, power, clock, and any thermal or performance-limit indicators.
- Play until the symptom appears. Compare sustained values and clock behavior with the moment of the stutter, FPS drop, crash, or shutdown. A high “maximum” from a momentary spike is not the same as sustained heat.
For an in-game overlay, MSI Afterburner can show GPU temperature, clock, usage, and other information and works with graphics cards from different brands, according to MSI. Download it only from MSI’s page or the download location MSI identifies; MSI warns about fake Afterburner sites. Its official page listed 4.6.6 as the final release and 4.6.7 as beta when the dossier was checked, so verify release status on the official page rather than assuming it is unchanged.

- Both CPU and GPU unusually hot: Room temperature, dust, obstructed airflow, fan behavior, or overall case cooling may be involved.
- Temperatures seem moderate but the system crashes: Do not assume heat is the cause. Check drivers, RAM, game files, power supply, overclocking, and hardware stability.
- Laptop readings are near a stated limit: Laptop processors often boost aggressively in a compact shared cooling system. Compare against the laptop maker’s guidance for that model, not desktop expectations.
Common causes of overheating during games
- Blocked airflow or dust: Dust, pet hair, filters clogged with lint, vents against a wall, or a laptop on bedding can restrict cooling. ASUS and Dell both identify airflow and dust as troubleshooting priorities.
- Cooling that is inadequate or failing: A stopped case or laptop fan, clogged heatsink, undersized or poorly mounted CPU cooler, degraded thermal interface, damaged heat pipe, or failing all-in-one cooler pump can prevent heat from escaping.
- More work than necessary: Uncapped FPS can make a GPU render frames the monitor cannot display. High resolution, ray tracing, CPU-heavy games, shader compilation, recording, browser tabs, and other background apps can add load.
- Warm surroundings: High room temperature or direct sun raises the system’s starting temperature and leaves less cooling headroom.
- Firmware or driver mismatch: BIOS, embedded-controller, chipset, or thermal-management software can influence fan behavior and power limits. MSI documents a model-specific laptop case in which mismatched Dynamic Tuning Technology and Intelligent Power Framework drivers can contribute to high CPU temperature; that does not mean a generic driver update fixes every laptop.
- Overclocking or aggressive power settings: More voltage and power generally produce more heat. An undervolt or lower power limit may help, but stability and availability vary by system.
- Another fault mistaken for heat: A driver crash, unstable overclock, RAM problem, inadequate or failing PSU, or game-specific issue can cause similar symptoms.
Fixes to try, from safest to more involved
1. Improve placement and clearance
Put a laptop on a firm, flat surface—not a bed, blanket, pillow, or sofa—and keep its intake and exhaust vents clear. A stand that raises the rear can help if it does not block an intake. Leave space around desktop intakes and exhausts, and move the computer away from direct sunlight or a hot enclosed space. A cooler room can help, but do not obstruct vents to achieve it.
2. Check for unnecessary background load
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- In Processes, sort by CPU, GPU, and Memory. Look for applications using substantial resources when no game is running.
- Close programs you recognize and do not need. Check Startup apps for unnecessary programs that launch automatically.
Do not end unfamiliar Windows processes indiscriminately. If unexplained resource use persists, investigate the process and use reputable security software where appropriate.
3. Clean accessible vents and filters
Shut down the computer and disconnect power before cleaning. Clear accessible vents, dust filters, grilles, and—on a desktop—front intake filters, GPU fans, CPU heatsink fins, rear exhaust fans, and the PSU intake. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions if using compressed air. Do not let a fan spin freely at high speed while blowing air into it, spray liquid or cleaning chemicals into vents, or open a laptop under warranty unless its maker permits it. Dust can clog cooling fins and force fans to work harder.

- Whisper Quiet: The 9 fans of the laptop cooling stand are all added with capacitor components to reduce working noise. the gaming laptop cooler is almost quiet enough not to notice even on max setting.
4. Update model-appropriate software
Install Windows updates and the graphics and chipset drivers appropriate to the system. For a laptop, use the computer maker’s support page and control application where required. Apply BIOS or firmware updates only for the exact computer model and according to the manufacturer’s procedure; do not use a file for a similar-looking model. Newer generic drivers are not automatically the right thermal-management package for every OEM laptop. ASUS and Dell recommend system-specific update paths, and MSI documents model-specific thermal-driver dependencies.
5. Reduce unnecessary game workload
Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped. Try an FPS cap at the monitor’s refresh rate—or a level the system can sustain—before lowering every visual setting. An in-game frame limiter or V-Sync may be appropriate, though effects on latency vary by setup. You can also reduce ray tracing, resolution, shadows, or view distance, close unneeded overlays and recording tools, or switch a laptop from Turbo/Extreme to Balanced mode. Lower settings may reduce image quality, and GPU settings will not necessarily fix a CPU-limited game. Test whether the problem happens in one game or across several demanding games.
6. Use fan or power controls cautiously
A manufacturer’s Balanced or Quiet profile, a lower CPU/GPU power limit, or a carefully tested GPU fan curve can reduce heat or noise trade-offs. MSI Afterburner supports monitoring and fan control, but tuning can cause instability, driver crashes, or failed game sessions. Reset overclocking or undervolting to defaults while diagnosing. Undervolting can reduce heat on some systems but may be locked or unstable; there is no universal voltage, clock, or power-limit value that is right for every CPU and GPU.

Desktop and laptop checks differ
Desktop gaming PC
Check that intake filters and front vents are clear, fans face the intended airflow direction, and the GPU has room to draw air. Confirm that case fans and the CPU cooler fan operate. If the CPU cooler needs remounting, thermal paste replacement, or the GPU needs internal work, do it only if you are comfortable following the exact hardware instructions. A liquid cooler adds a pump and radiator that can fail; liquid cooling is not a universal fix. A PSU intake blocked by a carpet or dust can also contribute to a power or heat problem, but crashes alone do not prove the PSU is at fault.
Gaming laptop
Laptops have compact cooling systems and often shared heat pipes; they cannot usually accept a larger CPU cooler. Prioritize a hard, flat surface, clear vents, the maker’s performance modes and model-specific firmware/drivers, and workload reduction. A cooling pad is worth considering only if it improves airflow at the laptop’s actual intake vents. It cannot repair a dead fan, internal dust blockage, poor heatsink contact, defective heat pipe, or other hardware fault. A stand may be enough if it simply lets the laptop breathe.

When temperatures are not the real cause
If sensor readings do not rise in step with the problem, or clocks do not show thermal limiting, consider other explanations. A crash can come from a graphics driver, game files, unstable memory, overclocking, or power delivery. If it happens only in one game, compare with another demanding game and check that title’s software and settings. Do not diagnose a thermal problem from 100% GPU usage alone, a single peak reading, or a loud fan.

When to stop and get repair help
Contact the computer maker or a qualified technician if a fan does not spin or makes grinding/clicking noises, the system repeatedly shuts down under load, or temperatures remain at or beyond the manufacturer’s limit after airflow is clear and accessible vents are clean. Stop using the device and seek prompt service for a swollen laptop battery, smoke, burning odor, liquid damage, or abnormal heat at idle. If the problem began after a drop or repair, mention that history.
Use warranty or authorized service before opening a covered or difficult-to-service laptop. Remounting a cooler or repasting is not automatically the answer: laptops may use different materials or pad thicknesses on the GPU, memory, and power components, and incorrect mounting or displaced pads can make contact worse. Intel advises owners of OEM systems to contact the computer manufacturer for overheating issues. A technician can assess fans, heatsink contact, pumps, thermal materials, or power hardware without guessing from one sensor value.
