Usually, the problem is one of four things: the Microsoft account itself cannot authenticate, Minecraft has a stale session, the wrong Microsoft account is selected, or the device’s sign-in flow is failing. Test the account in a browser first. If that works, reset Minecraft’s session using the instructions for your platform; if it fails, use Microsoft’s account-recovery tools instead of repeatedly reinstalling Minecraft.
1. Test the Microsoft account outside Minecraft
Open a private or normal browser window and sign in with the exact Microsoft email address you intend to use for Minecraft.
- Browser sign-in fails: the likely cause is the password, username, verification method, account security block, or account status—not Minecraft.
- Browser sign-in succeeds: focus on Minecraft’s saved session, the Launcher/Xbox identity, platform pairing, network restrictions, or account permissions.
If you cannot sign in, use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper. It checks the email address or phone number and directs you to the relevant recovery route.

Many Minecraft login failures are really identity mix-ups. Check the complete email address and domain, including older Hotmail, Live, or regional addresses. If Microsoft does not recognize the address, try another alias or phone number associated with the same account. Microsoft’s guidance is available in username and password troubleshooting.

Do not create a new Microsoft account just because the first address is rejected. The new account will not automatically contain your Minecraft profile, purchase, or expected gamertag.
Password, verification, and security blocks
- For a forgotten password, select Forgot password? on Microsoft’s sign-in page, choose an available verification method, enter the security code, and create a new password. See Microsoft’s password-reset instructions.
- If you see “You have tried too many times with an incorrect password”, stop submitting the same credentials. Confirm the email address, use the Sign-in Helper, and try an approved alternative sign-in method.
- If a verification code never arrives, check the correct alias, spam or SMS filtering, and another available security method. Repeated requests can trigger a temporary block. Microsoft says some blocks may last longer than 24 hours and potentially up to a week; it does not promise a fixed clearing time. Follow its verification-code guidance.
An Error 400 is a Microsoft sign-in error that can be caused by too many attempts or a problem with the app, browser, device, or network. Microsoft recommends trying another sign-in method, updating or reinstalling the affected app, changing devices, or switching networks (Error 400 support).

2. If browser sign-in works, reset Minecraft’s session
Closing the game or Launcher may leave its authentication token cached. Sign out explicitly, then sign in again.
Windows Minecraft Launcher
- Open the Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the gamertag menu in the top-left corner.
- Select Log out.
- Select Microsoft Login and authenticate again.
- Choose Sign in with a different account if the displayed account is not the one that owns or should access Minecraft.
Use the platform-specific steps in Minecraft’s official sign-out guide if the labels in your version differ.

Xbox
- Close Minecraft.
- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & System.
- Select the current account and choose Sign Out.
- Sign back into the intended Xbox profile, then start Minecraft.
PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile
- Open Minecraft and go to Settings > Account.
- Select Sign out of your Microsoft Account.
- Select Sign in for free! and note the displayed code.
- On another device, visit aka.ms/remoteconnect, enter the code, and sign in with the Microsoft account you actually want linked.
This code-pairing flow is for the platforms that display it. Windows Launcher users should not use it unless Minecraft specifically shows a remote-connect code.
3. Fix a PC login loop or mismatched account
When Microsoft sign-in succeeds but the Launcher returns to the login screen, compare the identity shown in each Windows service:

- Minecraft Launcher
- Xbox app
- Microsoft Store
- The gamertag or profile shown inside Minecraft
Sign out and back in with the intended account where necessary. A Store or Xbox account left over from another family member can make a valid login appear to have no game or profile.
Then fully quit the Launcher (including its background process), reopen it, and install available updates. If the sign-in component is damaged, updating or reinstalling the relevant Microsoft app can help. Reinstallation cannot repair a locked account, missing verification method, wrong email, or absent entitlement.

4. Try a controlled network or device test
If the account works in a browser but Minecraft fails, test the same account on another supported device or on a phone hotspot. Temporarily rule out VPNs, proxies, DNS filters, captive portals, and restrictive school or work networks. Microsoft specifically lists another device or network as an Error 400 troubleshooting step.
If the account fails everywhere, return to account recovery. If it fails only on one device, the problem is more likely local app state, platform credentials, or network configuration.

Signed in, but unable to play online?
Authentication and authorization are different. You may be successfully signed in but blocked from multiplayer, Realms, Marketplace, or another online feature by a child/family account, Xbox privacy setting, platform subscription, or service-specific problem. Confirm the gamertag and account first, then review the family organizer’s permissions. Do not label this a login failure unless Minecraft is actually rejecting the account session.

Contact Microsoft through its official support route when browser sign-in fails, the account is not recognized, recovery methods are unavailable, or a lock persists across devices. Microsoft notes that an account unused for more than two years may have been deleted under its retention rules; that is an account-policy issue, not Minecraft deleting a character or world.
Contact Minecraft support when Microsoft sign-in works normally but the correct account’s Minecraft profile, entitlement, or Launcher session remains broken after the platform sign-out/reset steps.
