When iOS shows me Delete App for an Apple app, I do not automatically tap it. I am keeping most of the built-in apps Apple allows me to remove—not because every one is excellent, or because I use every one regularly, but because many are small, integrated fallback tools. Hiding an app removes the clutter. Deleting it can remove functionality from CarPlay, Apple Watch, Control Center, widgets, and other parts of iOS.

That distinction matters particularly in the United States. Apple lets U.S. users delete many built-in apps, but not every default app. The exact list also varies by operating-system version and region. In the European Union, Apple permits additional deletions, including Messages, Camera, Photos, Safari, and the App Store; Japan has an additional Safari provision. Those are not general U.S. capabilities. Apple’s regional support documentation explains the differences.

“Deletable” does not mean “disposable”

Apple’s menu gives me three materially different choices:

  • Delete App: removes the app from the iPhone and can remove associated user data and configuration files.
  • Remove from Home Screen: leaves the app installed in the App Library and available through search.
  • Keep it visible: makes sense for apps I use frequently.

To hide an app, I touch and hold it, tap Remove App, then choose Remove from Home Screen. To delete it, I choose Delete App and confirm with Delete. Apple documents both paths in the iPhone User Guide.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

For most people whose complaint is a crowded Home Screen, deletion is the wrong first move. The App Library gives me the clean layout I want without removing a useful system component.

The hidden cost is integration

Apple’s apps are not just isolated icons. They are often entry points into shared features: iCloud, Siri, widgets, notifications, Apple Watch, CarPlay, location sharing, Apple’s continuity features, and system-level prompts.

A third-party replacement may be better for a particular workflow. I may prefer Gmail to Mail, Google Maps to Maps, or Spotify to Music. But that does not make the Apple app worthless. The built-in version can remain a universal fallback when a third-party app is unavailable, logged out, unsupported, discontinued, offline, or simply misbehaving.

Apple Watch

Deleting certain iPhone apps can also remove their corresponding Apple Watch apps. Apple specifically warns that deleting Health may require unpairing an Apple Watch first, and deleting the Watch app may also require unpairing the watch. That makes Health, Watch, Activity or Fitness, and related apps a connected group rather than a set of independent downloads.

If I own an Apple Watch, “I never open this app” is not a sufficient reason to delete it. The app may be managing data, settings, complications, or features used elsewhere.

CarPlay

Drivers have another reason to be cautious. Apple says that deleting Books, Maps, Music, or Podcasts removes those apps from CarPlay. Deleting Music can also prevent certain audio content from playing through Apple apps or third-party apps on some car stereos and receivers.

I might normally use Google Maps or Spotify, but keeping Apple’s alternatives costs me little and gives me another option in the car—especially when a route, playlist, or account is unavailable.

Control Center, widgets, and complications

Some apps matter primarily through surfaces I do not think of as “opening an app.” Deleting Calculator removes the calculator from Control Center. Deleting Weather or Stocks can remove related information from Notification Center, Apple Watch complications, or Glances. Music, Podcasts, Find My, and Health can similarly support workflows that begin outside their app icons.

This is why an app-frequency test is incomplete. An app can be rarely opened but frequently useful.

The Apple apps I am definitely keeping

Find My, Wallet, Health, Contacts, Files, and Shortcuts

Find My is more than a location-sharing app. It is the on-device interface for finding people, iPhones, Apple devices, AirTags, and compatible accessories. Deleting it does not automatically stop location sharing or disable Find My for devices and items, so it is not a privacy reset. It simply removes the convenient interface and can affect visibility of previously paired non-Apple Find My accessories.

Wallet is the central place for cards, passes, tickets, keys, and other credentials. Removing the app does not simply erase cards and passes stored in iCloud, but it does remove the normal interface for managing them. I would rather keep that access available.

Health is a repository and management interface for health data and Apple Watch features. Apple says the data remains on the iPhone if Health is deleted, but features including Medication Reminders, Sleep, Cycle Tracking, and Health Sharing are turned off. That is a considerable trade for removing an app I may rarely open.

  • Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID

Contacts is useful as a standalone directory, even though deleting it does not erase contact information; contacts remain available through Phone and other apps. Files is the general-purpose handoff point for documents downloaded or shared by other apps. Shortcuts exposes automations and actions created by Apple or third parties. These apps may feel optional until I need exactly what they provide.

Mail, Maps, Music, Notes, Calendar, and Reminders

These are classic fallback apps. I may have a preferred service, but a neutral Apple option is useful when I need to add another account, open a shared document, follow an Apple-specific link, or work without my usual setup.

Mail can handle an account I do not want to configure in my primary client. Maps can provide a backup route, transit result, or Apple-specific integration. Music can handle an Apple Music subscription, purchased content, local libraries, Siri requests, and CarPlay. Notes is a fast capture tool that requires no new service. Calendar and Reminders remain dependable alternatives when a work or family account is temporarily unavailable.

FaceTime is similar. Deleting the app does not completely prevent FaceTime calls: calls can still be made and received through Contacts and Phone. However, Apple says some FaceTime functionality requires the app to be redownloaded. Keeping it avoids that unnecessary interruption.

Calculator, Weather, Voice Memos, Translate, Measure, and Compass

These apps are not necessarily essential, but they are excellent examples of disproportionate occasional value. Calculator is immediately useful and connected to Control Center. Weather feeds glanceable information and watch complications. Voice Memos records something without another account or subscription. Translate, Measure, and Compass can be particularly valuable while traveling, working offline, or dealing with an unfamiliar device.

I do not need to open these apps every week for keeping them to make sense. Their value is that they are already installed, familiar, and ready when a specialized need appears.

The apps I might hide but still keep

Books, Podcasts, TV, Stocks, Tips, Freeform, Home, News where available, and similar apps are easier candidates for hiding. I may not use them often, but they have low visual value and potentially useful occasional roles.

Books, Music, Maps, and Podcasts deserve extra caution if I use CarPlay. Home is more relevant if I control accessories through Apple’s smart-home platform. Stocks and Weather can feed system surfaces. Freeform can be useful for a quick collaborative canvas. The decision is not whether each app is brilliant; it is whether its occasional usefulness and integrations outweigh the small amount of clutter it creates.

Does deleting them save meaningful storage?

Sometimes, but there is no universal number I can responsibly apply to every iPhone. Storage savings vary by app, iOS version, cached content, documents, and user-created data. Apple confirms that deleting a built-in app removes the app and related data or configuration files, but does not publish one fixed storage figure for every device and app. See Apple’s current support page for the documented behavior.

Before deleting anything for space, I would open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and check the app’s actual usage. If the main problem is Home Screen clutter, the storage benefit is irrelevant: removing the icon from the Home Screen provides the visual result without the functional trade-off.

Deleting an app can also remove local data. I would back up or export important information first, particularly from Notes, Voice Memos, Freeform, Health, and Files. That warning does not mean all iCloud data is erased; behavior is app-specific. Wallet data stored in iCloud, for example, is not deleted merely because Wallet is removed.

My keep, hide, or delete test

User or situation Best choice
I only want a cleaner Home Screen Choose Remove from Home Screen.
I use an Apple Watch Be cautious with Health, Watch, Activity or Fitness, and related apps.
I use CarPlay Keep Maps, Music, Podcasts, and Books if their in-car features matter.
I use Find My, AirTags, or location sharing Keep Find My.
I rely entirely on third-party services Delete selectively, after testing the replacement and its Apple integrations.
I frequently run out of storage Check the app’s real usage in iPhone Storage first.
I travel or work offline Keep fallback tools such as Maps, Translate, Notes, Voice Memos, and Files.
I am unsure what deletion affects Hide the app instead.

I delete an Apple app only when I have a tested replacement, I do not depend on its Watch, CarPlay, Control Center, iCloud, or sharing integrations, I have checked what data may be removed, and I know how to restore it.

How to restore a deleted Apple app

In most cases, I can open the App Store, search for the exact app name, tap the redownload button, and wait for it to return to the Home Screen. Apple documents this recovery process in its iPhone guide.

There is an important regional exception. In the European Union, deleting the App Store can prevent automatic or manual installation of updates for apps previously downloaded from it, and Apple says the App Store must be restored before other Apple apps can be redownloaded. Deleting the App Store there also has consequences for services such as subscriptions, Apple Arcade downloads, and app management. U.S. users should not assume those EU rules apply to them, or that the U.S. has the same deletion options.

When a third-party app is genuinely better

Keeping Apple’s apps is not a claim that Apple makes the best app for every person. Gmail or Outlook may be the right choice for a work account. Google Maps may be better for a Google-centered workflow. Spotify may be the better music ecosystem. Google Photos, 1Password, Bitwarden, Notion, and Todoist can each offer capabilities that Apple’s simpler tools do not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade is that a replacement may add another account, subscription, permission set, cloud service, or ecosystem dependency. I choose a third-party app when its cross-platform support or specialist features justify that added complexity—not merely because Apple gives me a Delete button.

The bottom line

I am keeping Apple’s deletable apps because the storage and clutter savings are often smaller than the consequences of removing them. The apps work together with Apple Watch, CarPlay, iCloud, widgets, Control Center, location sharing, and other system surfaces. Many are also dependable fallbacks when a third-party service is unavailable.

The practical rule is simple: keep frequently used apps visible, hide useful but distracting apps, and delete only after checking the integrations and data involved. The best-organized iPhone is not necessarily the one with the fewest Apple apps. It is the one where unnecessary apps are out of sight while useful system functionality remains available.
