The usual cause is timing, not a bad map coordinate. html2canvas rebuilds a page from the DOM; it does not copy the browser compositor’s final pixels. Google Maps can still be moving tiles and overlays internally after a pan appears finished, so html2canvas may read stale positions and produce a shifted map. Wait for the map’s idle event, wait for tilesloaded when imagery matters, defer one animation frame, and then capture the smallest stable map container. If the result is blank or cannot be exported, investigate cross-origin tile headers rather than applying a random CSS transform.

Why a map shifts after you pan

html2canvas is a DOM reconstruction library. It traverses the loaded document, interprets the CSS and element properties it understands, and draws its own representation onto a canvas. That is different from taking a native screenshot of the pixels already composited by the browser.

Google Maps updates internal tile and overlay positions during and after panning or zooming. The visible map can look correct while the DOM state that html2canvas reads is between updates. The html2canvas Google Maps issue record describes output that shifts after a map is panned, zoomed, or even left untouched; in affected cases, expected transform values were reported as none. A hard-coded offset therefore fixes one browser or Maps implementation at most, and can make another one worse.

Treat the problem as two separate questions:

  • Is the map geometrically wrong? Usually the capture started before movement and layout settled.
  • Is the map missing or impossible to export? Usually images were skipped or the canvas became tainted by cross-origin tiles.

The reliable capture sequence

Run this sequence after the user’s final pan or zoom. If you control the interaction, install the listeners before starting the gesture so you cannot miss an event.

  1. Finish the pan or zoom.
  2. Wait for Google Maps idle, which fires when the map becomes idle after panning or zooming.
  3. Wait for tilesloaded when the screenshot must include newly arriving imagery; it fires when visible tiles have finished loading.
  4. Defer one browser frame so layout and paint can settle.
  5. Capture the smallest stable map element rather than the entire application shell.

This implementation includes a timeout because a map style may not emit another tilesloaded event when the needed tiles are already cached.

function waitForStableMap(map, timeoutMs = 5000) {
  return new Promise(resolve => {
    let idleSeen = false;
    let tilesSeen = false;
    let finished = false;

    const finish = reason => {
      if (finished) return;
      finished = true;
      window.clearTimeout(timer);
      idleListener.remove();
      tilesListener.remove();
      resolve(reason);
    };

    const check = () => {
      if (idleSeen && tilesSeen) finish('events');
    };

    const idleListener = map.addListener('idle', () => {
      idleSeen = true;
      check();
    });
    const tilesListener = map.addListener('tilesloaded', () => {
      tilesSeen = true;
      check();
    });
    const timer = window.setTimeout(() => finish('timeout'), timeoutMs);
  });
}

async function captureMap(map) {
  const status = await waitForStableMap(map, 5000);
  if (status === 'timeout') {
    console.warn('Map did not emit both idle and tilesloaded before timeout');
  }

  await new Promise(requestAnimationFrame);

  const mapElement = document.querySelector('#map');
  if (!mapElement) throw new Error('Missing #map element');

  console.log('Google Maps rendering type:', map.getRenderingType?.());

  return html2canvas(mapElement, {
    useCORS: true,
    allowTaint: false,
    backgroundColor: null
  });
}

// Call after the final user gesture:
const canvas = await captureMap(map);
canvas.toBlob(blob => {
  if (!blob) throw new Error('Canvas could not be encoded');
  // upload or download the blob here
}, 'image/png');

If the map can be panned repeatedly, call waitForStableMap for each capture. For deterministic behavior, begin listening before the pan starts; calling it only after an already-completed gesture may leave you waiting for an event that will not fire again.

Cross-origin tiles: why the canvas is blank or tainted

Google Maps imagery commonly comes from an origin different from your application. The html2canvas FAQ explains that drawing an image from another origin taints the canvas, making it unreadable. With allowTaint: false (the default), html2canvas skips resources that would taint the result. That can leave a blank or incomplete map.

Use CORS only when the server permits it

useCORS: true asks the browser to load images with CORS. It works only when the tile response includes an appropriate Access-Control-Allow-Origin header. Your JavaScript setting cannot add that header to a server you do not control.

Use a same-origin proxy when permitted

If the image server does not provide usable CORS headers, route the images through a server-side, same-origin proxy and configure html2canvas’s proxy option. The proxy must fetch the resource legally, return the image, and set a content type that the browser can decode. Do not proxy content when the map provider’s terms or your authorization do not allow it.

Why allowTaint: true is not an export fix

That option allows cross-origin pixels to be drawn, but leaves the canvas unreadable by toDataURL, toBlob, and pixel APIs. It may make a display-only canvas appear populated; it does not solve an export requirement.

Raster and vector Maps need different diagnosis

Google documents raster and vector rendering types. Raster maps are assembled from server-generated image tiles. Vector maps use a different rendering implementation and can expose different DOM or canvas behavior. Record the mode before changing code:

const mode = map.getRenderingType();
console.log({ renderingType: mode });

Test the actual mode used by your page in the browser and html2canvas versions you ship. A workaround observed on a raster map is not evidence that it applies to a vector map. Google’s Mercator projection and world, pixel, and tile coordinate conversions are another reason that manually guessing a pixel offset is brittle.

Diagnose the symptom instead of patching transforms

The map is shifted only after a pan

  • Register the listeners before the gesture when possible.
  • Require idle, then tilesloaded if new imagery is expected.
  • Wait one requestAnimationFrame before html2canvas.
  • Capture the map container, not a moving parent with unrelated transitions.

The map is blank or missing tiles

  • Open the browser network panel and check whether tile requests are cross-origin.
  • Confirm that the responses have CORS headers, or use an authorized same-origin proxy.
  • Make sure the capture did not begin before tiles finished loading.
  • Keep allowTaint: false when you need a readable export; it exposes incompatible resources by skipping them.

“Tainted canvases may not be exported” appears

A resource without usable CORS headers reached the canvas. Use CORS-compliant responses or a same-origin proxy. Setting allowTaint: true only postpones the failure until export.

The output is clipped, empty, or unusually small

Check browser canvas-size limits and the dimensions html2canvas uses. A large full-page capture can exceed an engine’s maximum canvas area. Capture the smallest required element, and set windowWidth and windowHeight deliberately when your page’s responsive layout changes at screenshot time.

const canvas = await html2canvas(document.querySelector('#map'), {
  windowWidth: document.documentElement.clientWidth,
  windowHeight: document.documentElement.clientHeight,
  useCORS: true,
  allowTaint: false
});

A transform patch works on one machine only

Do not treat a guessed transform correction as a universal fix. Google supports multiple rendering implementations, and the html2canvas issue record includes cases where transforms appeared as none. If you must test a transform adjustment, tie it to a recorded browser, Maps rendering mode, and html2canvas version, then verify the geographic alignment and export path after every dependency update.

Make captures faster and more repeatable

  • Capture less: select the map element instead of the whole page.
  • Wait for the state you need: use both events for fresh imagery, but retain a bounded timeout so a missing event cannot hang a job forever.
  • Keep the rendering mode observable: log getRenderingType() with failures.
  • Separate display from export tests: a canvas that looks correct can still fail at toBlob because of CORS.
  • Test real browser conditions: cache state, viewport size, device pixel ratio, map mode, and tile response headers all affect the result.

For repeated captures, avoid starting a second capture while the first map is still moving. Queue requests or disable the capture control until the current canvas has been encoded. This prevents races in which an older capture resolves after a newer pan.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a hosted screenshot of a URL rather than a canvas extracted from an already-interactive tab, ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try: it removes consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and its paid entry plan is $5 for 3,000 shots.

Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for authentication and options. A single request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/maps -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.google.com/maps"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.google.com/maps' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo reports whether a response was a clean shot, a bot check, a blank page, a timeout, a failed load, or a cache hit through X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Non-clean outcomes and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Every plan includes the same feature set: full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, waits for selectors or network idle, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, up to 100 URLs per bulk call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and compatibility with parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should event listeners be attached before or after a pan?

Attach them before the gesture when you can. If you attach them afterward, an already-fired event may not fire again, so keep a bounded timeout and inspect the resulting map before encoding it.

How do I include controls or overlays outside the map element?

html2canvas captures the element you pass to it. Put the required controls inside the selected container or capture a stable parent that contains both the map and those overlays.

The Bottom Line

Wait for idle, wait for tilesloaded when tiles matter, defer one frame, and verify CORS before exporting. That event-driven approach is more durable than guessing a Google Maps transform.
