A full-page screenshot can be incomplete even when the capture call succeeds. The usual causes are a viewport-only capture, capturing before content has rendered, lazy-loaded content that never received a scroll event, or layout elements that behave differently during a long capture. Fix those as separate problems: enable full-page mode, set the viewport before navigation, wait for the content you need, trigger deferred loading, then inspect the resulting image.
First, identify what “failed” means
Compare the screenshot with the page rather than treating every incomplete image as the same problem. A short image with no footer usually points to viewport capture mode. A full-height image with blank sections suggests loading or lazy-rendering issues. Repeated headers or obscured content point to fixed or sticky elements. A successful API response only means the capture operation returned; it does not prove the artifact contains the expected page.
- Only the visible screen appears: use the tool’s full-page option.
- The image is tall but sections are blank: wait for client-rendered content and assets, and check whether scrolling triggers them.
- A header, banner, or widget repeats or covers content: inspect fixed and sticky elements and any nested scroll containers.
- Runs differ: make viewport, browser engine, browser version, color scheme, and timing consistent.
Enable the actual full-page capture mode
“Screenshot” does not necessarily mean “entire document.” Many capture tools default to the current viewport. Set the explicit full-page option and verify the output’s height and final section.
Firefox DevTools
Firefox offers a “Take a screenshot of the entire page” button in Developer Tools. The Web Console also accepts :screenshot capture.png --fullpage. The --fullpage flag tells Firefox to capture the page rather than only the visible browser area. See Mozilla’s Firefox Web Console helper-command documentation.

Playwright distinguishes viewport, element, and full-page screenshots. Set fullPage: true for the full scrollable page; choose scale: 'css' or scale: 'device' deliberately because the choice affects output pixels. await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
Puppeteer
Puppeteer uses page.screenshot() and supports { fullPage: true } for a document capture. Set the viewport before navigating: changing it mid-load can trigger a different responsive layout than the site initially rendered. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide and Page.setViewport API.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
Make the page state reproducible
Responsive breakpoints can change column count, navigation, text wrapping, and document height. A viewport change after navigation may therefore alter both the layout and the page content that has already loaded. Before navigating, set the width and height, device scale, locale, and color scheme that you intend to capture. Keep the browser engine and version constant when comparing runs.

- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
For example, a desktop-width capture and a phone-width capture are different page states, not merely different image sizes. Record the chosen viewport with the artifact so a later comparison uses the same conditions. If an element is absent, check whether the selected breakpoint hides it before assuming the screenshot tool omitted it.
Wait for visual readiness, not just navigation
A screenshot represents the page at a particular moment. Navigation completion does not necessarily mean that client-rendered sections, fonts, images, or API-backed content are ready. Chrome’s Network panel helps show which resources have loaded and when; cache state and ongoing requests can affect what appears in the image. See Chrome DevTools Network overview.

Use the strongest page-specific readiness condition available: wait for a known selector to appear, an application state to finish rendering, or an image to complete loading. If the page uses web fonts, wait for them before capture. A fixed sleep can help with a known delay, but it is a weak sole readiness test: it may waste time on a fast run and still be too short on a slow one.
Playwright example with a page-specific readiness check
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Replace this with a selector that means the content you need is ready.
await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true, scale: 'css' });
await browser.close();
The example uses a page-specific selector rather than asserting that one navigation event guarantees readiness. For a site that renders its main content later, choose a selector or application condition that corresponds to the content the capture must contain.

Prepare lazy-loaded and scroll-triggered content
Some images and sections are loaded only when they approach the viewport. A full-page capture option does not necessarily reproduce a visitor scrolling through the page, so content below the fold may remain unloaded. Intersection-based rendering can have the same effect. If the target page behaves this way, scroll down in increments, allow newly requested resources to settle, and then take the full-page screenshot. This is a page-specific preparation procedure: inspect the result to confirm that it worked.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →async function triggerLazyContent(page) {
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const step = Math.max(400, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.75));
const pause = ms => new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, ms));
for (let y = 0; y < document.documentElement.scrollHeight; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await pause(250);
}
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
await pause(250);
});
}
await triggerLazyContent(page);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
The pauses above are an example, not a universal timing guarantee. Increase or replace them with a page-specific signal if the site’s requests take longer. Also check whether the content sits inside a nested scroll container; scrolling the window alone will not trigger that container’s deferred content.

Check sticky headers, overlays, and stitching
Fixed and sticky elements can occlude page content or appear in unexpected positions in a long image. Cookie banners, chat widgets, and other overlays can cover the section you need. Inspect the page’s position: fixed and position: sticky elements, plus elements that scroll inside their own containers. Compare the browser’s native full-page capture with any workflow that captures separate viewport segments and stitches them together. In a controlled test, temporarily disable a suspected overlay; if the artifact changes, you have evidence that it contributes to the problem.
Do not assume every repeated element is a screenshot-tool defect. A site’s scroll handlers or sticky layout may be responsible, and behavior can vary by browser and page. Confirm the problem on the target page before changing production capture settings.
Use a reliable end-to-end capture workflow
- Set conditions before navigation. Choose the browser engine, viewport, device scale, locale, and color scheme. Do not change the viewport mid-load.
- Navigate and wait for the required content. Use a relevant selector, application signal, font readiness, or other condition tied to the page you need.
- Trigger deferred content if needed. Scroll through the document, wait for newly requested resources, and return to the top. Verify the target site’s behavior rather than treating a scroll pass as a guarantee.
- Capture in explicit full-page mode. Use Firefox’s full-page command or button, Playwright’s
fullPage: true, or Puppeteer’s{ fullPage: true }. - Validate the file. Check its pixel dimensions, opening and ending sections, images and fonts, blank areas, and repeated or occluding elements. Confirm that a known footer or final section appears.
- Keep the capture conditions with the artifact. Record the URL, viewport, browser and version, timestamp, and capture options so a later run is meaningfully comparable.
Diagnose rendering instability
If scrolling or content movement continues while the capture is taken, a long screenshot can reflect a changing page. Chrome DevTools’ Rendering panel exposes frame statistics and scrolling-performance indicators that can help identify dropped frames or problematic scroll handlers. See Chrome DevTools Rendering. Investigate instability before relying on a capture; no browser or library guarantees a perfect result for every site.
Common failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Image is only viewport-height | Capture used the default viewport mode | Enable the tool’s explicit full-page option and confirm the output is taller than the viewport. |
| Footer is missing | Wrong mode, incomplete document, or content rendered only after scrolling | Check full-page mode, document height, nested scroll containers, and whether scrolling triggers the final section. |
| Images below the fold are blank | Lazy loading or delayed image requests | Scroll through the page, wait for the resources, then inspect the saved image. |
| Text or application section is absent | Client rendering had not finished when captured | Wait for a selector or application-specific ready state rather than relying only on navigation or a fixed sleep. |
| Layout differs between runs | Viewport, device scale, browser version, locale, or color scheme changed | Set these conditions before navigation and retain them with the capture. |
| Header or overlay repeats or hides content | Sticky/fixed positioning, an overlay, or a stitched capture workflow | Inspect the element and compare native full-page capture with segment stitching; isolate the overlay in a controlled test. |
| Screenshot succeeds but is visually wrong | The API call completed without validating page content | Check dimensions, page start and end, expected assets, blank areas, and overlays. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does full-page mode automatically load every lazy image?
Not necessarily. A page may require scroll-triggered loading, so inspect the output and use a scroll-and-wait preparation pass when needed.
Why does the same page produce screenshots with different heights?
Responsive layout, content that renders asynchronously, and inconsistent viewport or browser conditions can change document height.
