MacBooks do have USB ports—what most current models lack is the older, rectangular USB-A port. Their USB-C-shaped ports can handle USB data and, depending on the model and port, may also support Thunderbolt, video output and charging. If an older accessory will not plug in, you usually need a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, hub or replacement cable.
USB is not the same thing as USB-A
USB is a family of connection standards. USB-A is the familiar rectangular connector found on older flash drives, keyboards and many other accessories. USB-C is a smaller, reversible connector: either way up, its plug fits. A MacBook without USB-A can still connect to USB devices through USB-C cables, adapters and hubs.
The connector shape does not tell you everything a port can do. USB-C describes the physical connector, not a guaranteed speed or feature set. Depending on the MacBook, its USB-C-shaped ports may support USB 3, USB 4, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort video, charging—or only some of these. Thunderbolt is a separate high-speed interface that uses the USB-C connector on recent Macs. A USB-C cable that fits a Thunderbolt port is not necessarily a Thunderbolt cable, and not every USB-C port supports video.

MagSafe is different again: it is Apple’s magnetic charging connector, not USB-C. Many current MacBooks can charge through MagSafe while leaving their USB-C/Thunderbolt ports available for peripherals.

Why Apple moved away from USB-A
Apple’s shift was about consolidating connections, not abandoning USB. USB-C is smaller than USB-A, is reversible, and can carry power and data. With Thunderbolt, a single port can also connect high-speed storage, displays and docks. Apple’s 2016 MacBook Pro announcement presented Thunderbolt 3 as a way to combine data, charging and video over one connection, while promoting a thinner, lighter laptop design. Fewer dedicated connectors also give laptop designers more freedom over the edges and internal layout. That is a reasonable design benefit, though it is not a quantified explanation of Apple’s decision. The practical cost was immediate: people with USB-A drives, HDMI displays, SD cards and other existing accessories had to add adapters, replace cables or buy a hub. Critics also saw the transition as Apple making customers pay for its preferred direction; that is criticism of the decision, not an official statement of Apple’s motive.

How the MacBook port lineup changed
- 2015: The 12-inch MacBook pushed the idea to an extreme with one USB-C port for charging, data and display connections. That created a real conflict when users needed to charge and connect an accessory at the same time. It was not representative of every MacBook, then or now. Contemporary coverage of the transition
- 2016: MacBook Pro dropped USB-A and offered up to four Thunderbolt 3 ports using USB-C connectors. Apple pitched them as a shared connection for data, power and video. Apple’s announcement
- 2018: The redesigned MacBook Air adopted Thunderbolt 3/USB-C, extending the approach across Apple’s main laptop lines. Apple’s Mac port guide
- Later MacBook Pro generations: Apple brought back MagSafe, HDMI and SDXC on Pro models while keeping Thunderbolt. The result is a mixed-port laptop, not a USB-C-only one.
- Current lineup: As of September 2026, the MacBook Air has two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports, MagSafe 3 and a headphone jack. MacBook Pro configurations vary: current specifications distinguish models with Thunderbolt 4 from M5 Pro/M5 Max models with Thunderbolt 5, and Pro models also include HDMI, SDXC, MagSafe 3 and a headphone jack. The Pro lineup’s return of selected ports is a useful correction to the idea that Apple has stuck to a USB-C-only approach. It reflects a compromise: Thunderbolt for flexible, high-bandwidth connections, with HDMI and SDXC available directly for common professional workflows.

How to choose a cable, adapter or dock
For one flash drive or keyboard, a small USB-C-to-USB-A adapter is usually enough. For occasional travel needs such as USB-A, HDMI and SD, a multiport adapter is more convenient. A hub suits several ordinary peripherals; a powered Thunderbolt dock is worth considering for a permanent setup with high-speed storage, networking and demanding display needs. The most expensive option is not automatically the right one.
Before buying, check these four parts of the connection: the MacBook port, the cable, the adapter or dock, and the accessory. All must support the feature you want. In particular:

- Data speed: USB-C cables can be limited to USB 2 speeds even if they fit a faster port. Match the cable and hub to the drive or other device.
- Video: Confirm that the Mac port and adapter support the display connection, resolution and refresh rate. The number of supported displays varies by Mac model and chip; do not assume every MacBook supports the same setup.
- Charging: A hub may pass power through but deliver less than your Mac’s original adapter. Check its power-delivery rating, especially for a MacBook Pro used under load. MagSafe can keep charging separate from the USB-C ports on models that include it. Apple’s charging guidance
- Shared bandwidth: A hub shares its connection to the Mac among attached devices. Multiple fast drives, displays and network connections cannot all draw unlimited bandwidth from one port.
- Compatibility and power: Some docks need their own power supply; display support can also depend on dock technology and macOS. Check the dock’s Mac compatibility rather than relying on connector shape alone.

Is a MacBook inconvenient if you use older USB devices?
It can be. USB-A remains convenient for workplaces, classrooms, labs and households with several older accessories: those devices plug in directly, often without checking a cable’s specification. A USB-C/Thunderbolt MacBook is more flexible for fast storage, modern displays and one-cable docking, but it makes compatibility and adapter choices part of everyday use.

If you rely on many legacy devices, check the exact MacBook’s ports before buying and budget for a hub or dock if needed. If you mainly use newer USB-C accessories, displays and storage, the newer port system may be a better fit. Current MacBook Pro models offer more built-in legacy-friendly connections than the first USB-C-only generations; MacBook Air users generally rely more on USB-C accessories or adapters.
