If your Mac keeps opening context menus or treating ordinary clicks as right-clicks, macOS is receiving a secondary click—often from a trackpad gesture, mouse, or held Control key. Disconnect external pointing devices first: that quick test helps separate an accessory problem from a built-in trackpad, keyboard, setting, or hardware issue.
What “right-clicking” means on a Mac
Apple calls a right-click a secondary click or Control-click. It can come from a two-finger trackpad click or tap, the configured side of a Magic Mouse, a Control-click on the keyboard, or an accessibility action. The symptom may be a context menu appearing unexpectedly, an ordinary click opening a menu, or an application showing shortcut menus without an obvious right-click.
First note exactly what happens: Does it occur when you click, when you tap, or without touching anything? Does it happen in every app or only one? The answers help distinguish a gesture or accessory from an app-specific problem or a physical fault.
Run a quick isolation test
- Save your work.
- Turn off or disconnect every external mouse and trackpad. Also disconnect pointing devices such as a drawing tablet or game controller, and temporarily unplug hubs or docks if practical.
- Temporarily quit or disable third-party mouse or trackpad utilities.
- Restart the Mac and test the built-in trackpad, taking care not to rest a second finger on it.
This is a troubleshooting test, not a special Apple diagnostic. If the problem stops, focus on the external device, its settings, battery, connection, or software. If it continues only in one app, investigate that app. If it occurs across macOS with accessories disconnected, check the keyboard, accessibility and trackpad settings, then consider hardware service.

If the built-in trackpad is triggering menus
On current macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Trackpad > Point & Click. Find Secondary click and check the selected gesture. A two-finger click or tap is a common configuration. For a test, turn Secondary click off or change it to a gesture you are unlikely to trigger accidentally. Also turn off Tap to click temporarily; it is a separate setting and may help identify whether light contact is being interpreted as a click. Apple’s instructions for trackpad options are in its Trackpad settings guide.
Click and pressure settings are also worth checking. On a Force Touch trackpad, a firm press can trigger a separate pressure-sensitive Force Click action. Force Click is not normally a right-click, but its response can be mistaken for one. In System Settings > Trackpad > Point & Click, try a firmer click-pressure setting and, if available, temporarily turn off Force Click and haptic feedback. Apple explains how to use and adjust Force Touch and recommends firmer pressure if you trigger it unintentionally.
Clean the trackpad surface if it is dirty or damp, but do not spray cleaner onto it or allow liquid into openings. For a Magic Trackpad, Apple recommends a clean, lint-free cloth and cautions against moisture in openings, aerosol sprays, solvents, and abrasives (cleaning guidance). Cleaning may help with surface contact; it will not repair a failing sensor or mechanism.

If a mouse is the source
For a Magic Mouse, open Apple menu > System Settings > Mouse and inspect Secondary click. It can be assigned to the left or right side of the mouse’s upper surface. Temporarily turn it off or change the side, then test on a clean, stable surface. Check whether your hand is resting on the configured side, and look for dirt or moisture. Apple describes the setting in its Magic Mouse guide.
Turn the mouse off and back on, charge it, and check that Bluetooth is enabled under System Settings > Bluetooth. If needed, remove the mouse from Bluetooth settings and pair it again. Connecting a compatible Magic accessory to the Mac with its appropriate USB-C or Lightning cable can pair and charge it; see Apple’s Bluetooth accessory troubleshooting and setup instructions. Interference can make a wireless connection unreliable, though that does not establish Bluetooth as the cause of a right-click specifically.
Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad can be used while charging; Magic Mouse cannot be used normally while charging because its port is on the underside (Apple’s charging guidance). A low charge, unstable connection, failing sensor or switch, or third-party driver could contribute to erratic input. Test another mouse—ideally a wired USB mouse if available. If the second mouse works normally and the original does not, the original device or its configuration is the stronger suspect. A replacement makes sense only after this test points to the mouse; it will not fix a built-in trackpad, keyboard, or system setting problem.

Check for a stuck Control key
Holding Control while clicking produces a Control-click, the Mac equivalent of a secondary click. If menus open whenever you click with different pointing devices, a stuck Control key is worth checking. Press and release both Control keys several times. Disconnect an external keyboard and test again. Inspect the keys for debris, liquid damage, or one that remains physically depressed. If needed, use Keyboard Viewer to see whether macOS registers Control as held down.
Review Accessibility pointer settings
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control. Check Alternate pointer actions and Mouse Keys; temporarily switch them off if you do not use them. Also review Trackpad Options, Mouse Options, and Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present. These controls can alter pointer behavior. Apple notes that third-party mouse-driver software can prevent the ignore-trackpad option from working as expected; details are in its Pointer Control guide.
System Settings is the current name; older macOS releases use System Preferences, and labels or layout may differ by version.

Use where and when it happens to narrow the cause
- Only with an external mouse: Check its secondary-click setting, charge, surface, Bluetooth pairing, and manufacturer utility. Test a different mouse.
- Only with the built-in trackpad: Check two-finger secondary click, Tap to click, click pressure and Force Click, then inspect for physical changes.
- With every pointing device: Check for a stuck Control key, Accessibility actions, Mouse Keys, and third-party input software.
- Only in one app: Compare Finder, Safari, System Settings, and a basic text editor. If only one app misbehaves, update it and review its extensions or settings; macOS may not be the cause.
- After the pointer reaches a screen edge near another Mac or iPad: Universal Control may be moving the pointer between devices. It does not ordinarily generate right-clicks, but can make pointer behavior seem unexpected. Check System Settings > Displays > Advanced to change pointer movement between nearby devices. See Apple’s Universal Control guide.
If the Mac runs Windows through Boot Camp, check whether the behavior occurs in Windows, macOS, or both. Windows uses different drivers and secondary-click settings; Apple has separate Boot Camp instructions.
When a trackpad problem may be hardware
Stop troubleshooting and arrange professional service if the trackpad is raised, uneven, unusually stiff or difficult to click, or if the bottom case is bulging or the Mac rocks on a flat surface. These can indicate physical damage, including possible battery expansion pressing against the trackpad. That is a warning sign, not a diagnosis. Do not press, pry, bend, puncture, or open the Mac to try to fix it. If the Mac is visibly bulging, damaged, or hot, disconnect its charger and shut it down if safe, then contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple’s trackpad guidance recommends service for persistent problems.

Avoid generic advice to reset the SMC or NVRAM: procedures depend on whether the Mac is Apple silicon or Intel and on the model, and a reset is not a universal fix for this symptom. If you have eliminated the usual causes but the issue continues, testing in another user account or a startup environment can help distinguish login software from a system-wide or hardware problem; ask Apple Support if you are unsure how to proceed.
If the pointer is difficult to control
Use a known-working USB mouse if available. A keyboard can help you navigate to settings; on some Apple keyboards, a contextual-menu key can open a shortcut menu. Apple lists compatible keyboard behavior in its secondary-click guide.
