A Mac’s recurring “ding” is usually an alert, interface sound effect, volume-key feedback, app notification, startup chime, or accessory warning—not automatically a sign of failing hardware. The quickest clue is when it happens: during startup, after an action, when you press a key, at regular intervals, or when you connect something.
First, identify when the ding happens

macOS plays alert sounds when an action is not allowed or the Mac needs you to provide information. An app, browser tab, or connected device can also make a sound independently of macOS’s alert setting, so one unexplained ding does not identify its source.
Change or silence common Mac sounds
For current macOS versions, open Apple menu → System Settings → Sound. Under Sound Effects, you can adjust the alert sound and volume, choose where sound effects play, and disable common interface sounds.
- Check Alert sound. Choose another sound to see whether it matches the ding you hear. The alert plays when the Mac needs attention or blocks an action.
- Lower Alert volume. This reduces alert loudness without turning off other sounds. Alert volume is relative to the Mac’s overall output volume, so lowering the main output volume also makes alerts quieter.
- Turn off Play user interface sound effects. This stops effects associated with actions such as dragging an item to the Trash.
- Turn off Play feedback when volume is changed. This stops the sound some keyboards play when you use their volume keys. On some keyboards, holding Shift while pressing a volume key temporarily reverses this feedback setting.
- Check Play sound effects through. Choose the intended output device; the options depend on what is connected.
These controls do not necessarily silence app notifications, browser audio, media, or startup diagnostic beeps. If the sound occurs only in one app, check that app’s notification and sound settings rather than assuming it is the global Mac alert.

If you need a visual cue instead of an audible alert, look in System Settings → Accessibility → Audio for Flash the screen when an alert sound occurs.
Turn off the normal startup chime
A single chime shortly after pressing the power button is different from repeated diagnostic beeps. Apple documents a startup-sound control for macOS Big Sur 11 and later.

- macOS Ventura 13 or later: Open Apple menu → System Settings → Sound, then turn Play sound on startup on or off.
- macOS Big Sur 11 or Monterey 12: Open Apple menu → System Preferences → Sound, select Sound Effects, and change Play sound on startup.
- Earlier macOS versions: This setting is not available in the documented controls.
If your Mac makes a series of beeps during startup while the display remains blank, do not treat that as the normal chime or try to solve it by muting sound effects.

If the ding happens when you connect a cable or accessory
Disconnect the device and test the Mac without it. Docks, hubs, external displays, drives, headphones, speakers, chargers, and USB audio devices can trigger connection events or change which output device is active. If the sound stops, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the trigger; try another cable or port where appropriate.

USB-C liquid-detection warning on certain newer Macs
On certain Apple-documented Mac models running macOS Sequoia or later, connecting a USB-C cable or accessory can trigger a liquid-detection warning if moisture is detected in the port, cable, or accessory. The listed models include MacBook Neo; MacBook Air with M3, M4, or M5 chips; and MacBook Pro with M3 Pro, M3 Max, M4, M4 Pro, M4 Max, M5, M5 Pro, or M5 Max chips. This is a model- and software-dependent case, not an explanation for every Mac ding.
If you see that warning, disconnect the cable or accessory, shut down the Mac, and disconnect power. Let the port, cable ends, and accessory dry completely; Apple advises waiting at least a day before trying again. Do not use external heat, compressed air, cotton swabs, paper, or rice. If the warning returns with one particular accessory, it may be damaged. If it recurs with an Apple USB-C cable or accessory, contact Apple Support.

Repeated startup beeps: patterns Apple documents
Apple says startup diagnostic beeps differ from the normal startup sound. The documented patterns apply to some Mac models, not universally to every Intel, T2, or Apple-silicon Mac.

Record the timing and pattern if you need help identifying it. If the Mac will not start normally, disconnect accessories and contact Apple or an authorized service provider.

If there is no obvious cause, isolate it step by step
- Note the timing. Does the sound happen at startup, on wake, at login, while charging, after a key press, or during a particular app or task?
- Watch the screen. Look for a notification banner, alert dialog, permission prompt, flashing screen, or other message when the sound occurs. A notification can disappear quickly or be hidden behind another window.
- Turn off interface effects and volume feedback. Use the Sound settings above to rule out those common triggers.
- Check sound routing. In System Settings → Sound, inspect Play sound effects through and Output. Disconnect headphones, external speakers, displays, docks, and USB audio devices; then test with the Mac’s built-in speakers selected.
- Disconnect accessories. Unplug hubs, drives, displays, chargers, and other devices. Reconnect them individually to find out whether one triggers the sound. Apple also recommends disconnecting accessories and reconnecting them one at a time when troubleshooting a startup problem.
- Quit recently installed or updated apps. If the sound stops, check the app’s notification or sound preferences. Browser tabs, messaging tools, backup utilities, and security apps can make their own sounds.
- Restart and observe. Note whether it happens before login, only after login, or only when a particular device or app is active. Safe Mode can help test whether startup software is involved, but the steps vary by Mac model and macOS version; use Apple’s instructions for your specific Mac.
- Record a repeated beep pattern. A short recording and the Mac’s model and macOS version can help distinguish an app alert from a startup diagnostic signal.
Do not start with Terminal commands, third-party “sound fixer” utilities, or firmware-reset procedures. The documented Sound settings and a careful accessory/app isolation test are safer first steps.
When to get help
A single ordinary alert is not evidence of failing speakers. Seek Apple or authorized service if the Mac repeatedly produces a documented startup-beep pattern, will not boot normally, shows abnormal status-indicator behavior, or continues to report a hardware-related warning. Persistent liquid-detection alerts deserve attention, especially if they recur after the port and accessory have fully dried. If the sound happens only with a third-party cable, dock, or display, contact that accessory’s manufacturer as well.
