Doctor Sleep is the 2019 Mike Flanagan film behind the “underrated Stephen King movie” headline. It continues Danny Torrance’s story from The Shining, earned generally favorable reviews, and still has a strong case for rediscovery. The Netflix part of the headline needs a date and a country, however: a November 2025 article said it was streaming there, while a U.S. listing checked July 31, 2026 showed rental and purchase options without confirming Netflix inclusion.
The movie behind the headline
Released in North America on November 8, 2019, Doctor Sleep was written and directed by Mike Flanagan from Stephen King’s 2013 sequel novel. Ewan McGregor plays Danny Torrance, with Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat and Kyliegh Curran as Abra Stone. King’s official film page describes the setup at stephenking.com.

Danny is now an adult, carrying the psychological damage of the Overlook Hotel and a serious drinking problem. He meets Abra, a child with an unusually powerful version of the “shine,” and becomes involved in a conflict with Rose and the True Knot, a group that hunts people with psychic abilities.

Why its theatrical run created an “underrated” reputation
Calling Doctor Sleep King’s most underrated movie is an opinion, not an objective ranking. The argument becomes persuasive when critical respect is set beside its modest theatrical performance.
| Measure | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| Estimated production budget | Approximately $45 million |
| Worldwide gross | Approximately $72.4 million |
| U.S. and Canadian gross | Approximately $31.6 million |
| U.S. and Canadian opening weekend | Approximately $14.1 million |
| Theatrical runtime | About 151–152 minutes, depending on the listing |
These figures are listed by IMDb. They do not describe a financial catastrophe, but they do show why the film failed to become a major franchise event. It had to sell itself simultaneously as a sequel to one of horror’s most revered films, an adaptation of a comparatively newer King novel, and a Mike Flanagan supernatural drama.
A difficult marketing proposition
- The title Doctor Sleep was less immediately recognizable than The Shining.
- The story is not a straightforward continuation of the original film’s plot.
- A running time of roughly two and a half hours can discourage casual theatrical viewers.
- The movie opened in a crowded modern horror market.
- Its reflective themes made it less easily advertised as a conventional jump-scare sequel.
Those are plausible contributors rather than a single proven cause. The result was a film that many viewers encountered later, at home, where its length and gradual structure were easier to accept.
Flanagan’s solution to an almost impossible adaptation problem
King’s novel and Kubrick’s film do not share identical continuity. King’s book leaves the Overlook’s history and Danny’s family story in a different place, while Kubrick’s version became the dominant visual reference for movie audiences. Flanagan therefore made a bridge rather than choosing one source and ignoring the other.
Rank #2
- Director Mike Flanagan's psychological horror film is an adaptation of Stephen King's 2013 novel of the same name, which is a sequel to his 1977 novel "The Shining." Ewan McGregor plays an adult Dan Torrance, who befriends a young girl with similar psychic powers. They join forces against The True Knot: an evil cult that exploits children with supernatural powers in their quest for immortality.
- Genre: Horror
- Rated R
That balancing act is discussed in a Rotten Tomatoes interview. The film borrows recognizable images and locations from Kubrick, but it uses them to advance Danny’s emotional journey instead of treating them as a sequence of nostalgic cameos.
It is not simply “more The Shining”
The first substantial movement of the story follows Danny’s adult life, addiction and attempts to rebuild himself. The Overlook material arrives after the film has established what Danny has lost and what recovery demands of him. That structure can surprise viewers expecting an immediate return to the hotel, but it is what allows the final confrontation to carry emotional weight.
Flanagan’s film also gives the True Knot a distinctive supernatural mythology. Rose is frightening not only because she is powerful, but because she treats vulnerable children as a resource. The conflict turns psychic ability into a question of consent, exploitation and responsibility.

Addiction and recovery
Danny’s alcoholism is not decorative backstory. It is the adult expression of inherited trauma, and his recovery gives the movie its human spine. His supernatural burden and his drinking are connected forms of avoidance: both let him suppress pain until suppression becomes destructive.
Rank #3
Inherited trauma
The film asks what a child does with damage handed down by a parent, a place or a violent history. Danny cannot erase the Overlook, but he can decide whether its patterns determine his adult life.
Mentorship and chosen family
Danny and Abra form a relationship built on guidance rather than blood. Their alliance gives the story a warmer center than many horror sequels and lets Danny become the protector he needed when he was young.
The ethical use of power
The shine can be used to hide, manipulate or prey on others. It can also support empathy and protection. By placing Danny and Abra against the True Knot, the film makes supernatural ability a moral choice rather than a simple superpower.

Rotten Tomatoes characterizes the film as a worthy descendant of The Shining, emphasizing that it works as psychological horror while incorporating familiar elements. The site lists a 2-hour-31-minute theatrical runtime and a U.S. release date of November 8, 2019.
Rank #4
IMDb listed the film at 7.3/10 from approximately 246,000 user ratings at the time of the cited search. Ratings change, so that number should be treated as a snapshot rather than a permanent measurement.
The combination matters more than either score alone. A well-reviewed film can still miss commercially when its premise is hard to summarize, its running time is long and its audience is split between fans of a book and fans of a different film.
What works—and what may not
Strengths
- McGregor, Ferguson and Curran give the supernatural conflict a strong character base.
- The recovery story gives the sequel emotional stakes independent of callbacks.
- The True Knot provides a coherent mythology and a threatening opposing force.
- Flanagan honors Kubrick’s imagery while adapting King’s later themes.
- The film treats redemption as an earned process rather than a final speech.
Potential drawbacks
- The patient opening can feel slow if you expect immediate Overlook horror.
- The tone moves between recovery drama, supernatural thriller and legacy sequel.
- Some visual callbacks depend heavily on familiarity with Kubrick’s film.
- Readers of King’s novel may dislike changes made to continuity and the ending.
- The theatrical cut runs for roughly 151–152 minutes.
Spoiler note: how the film reconciles the two continuities
Spoilers for the film and its relationship to the book follow.
Flanagan’s adaptation reshapes parts of King’s novel so the story can return to the Overlook as Kubrick depicted it. The movie uses the hotel’s rooms, ghosts and visual grammar as the setting for Danny’s confrontation with the past, while preserving the novel’s emphasis on Abra, the True Knot and Danny’s recovery. The result is not a literal continuation of either source; it is a deliberate compromise that lets King’s character arc exist inside Kubrick’s cinematic world.
Should you watch The Shining first?
- For the fullest experience, watch Kubrick’s The Shining first. You will recognize the visual references and understand why Danny’s return to the Overlook matters.
- King’s novels are helpful but not required. Reading The Shining and Doctor Sleep adds context, especially around the differences in continuity.
- You can follow the plot without preparation. The movie explains Danny’s adult circumstances and Abra’s role on its own, but some emotional and visual resonance will be reduced.
Is Doctor Sleep on Netflix now?
The headline’s Netflix claim came from a Collider article published November 3, 2025, which described the film as streaming on Netflix; the item is mirrored at IMDb News. That does not establish availability today.
A U.S. JustWatch listing checked July 31, 2026 showed digital rental and purchase options but did not confirm inclusion in Netflix’s subscription catalog. Netflix availability changes by country and over time, and a third-party listing can lag behind a catalog change. Check Netflix directly in your territory before subscribing or planning a viewing.
The same U.S. listing identified Amazon Video, Apple TV Store and Fandango At Home as rental or purchase destinations. Their official storefronts are Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. Prices vary by platform, resolution and promotion. DVD and Blu-ray listings were also indicated through retailers including GRUV, Amazon Movies & TV and Barnes & Noble.
Verdict
Doctor Sleep is not automatically the greatest Stephen King adaptation ever, but it is one of the most ambitious. Its theatrical numbers obscured a thoughtful recovery story, strong performances and an unusually difficult attempt to unite King’s literary sequel with Kubrick’s film. That makes “underrated” a defensible verdict—and makes its current Netflix status something to verify rather than assume.
