Your apps should normally still be open after your computer wakes from sleep. If they have all disappeared, the computer may have restarted, shut down, run out of power, or crashed during sleep or wake. First determine what happened to the operating system; then troubleshoot drivers, power, or peripherals. Save any open work before testing, because a restart can erase unsaved changes.
First, work out what “closed” means
Notice what appears when you return to the computer:
- A manufacturer logo or Windows/macOS startup screen: the computer booted again; this was not an ordinary wake.
- A sign-in screen, followed by an empty desktop: it may have restarted or logged you out. Check for restart evidence before assuming which.
- The desktop is still there, but one app or its windows are gone: this may be an application crash or a session-restoration issue rather than a system-wide sleep failure.
- Apps appear in the taskbar or Dock but are blank or frozen: the system may have resumed badly, or an app may not have recovered correctly.
Also distinguish the screen turning off from the computer sleeping: a dark display alone does not show that the system entered sleep. Windows describes sleep as a low-power state intended to return you to your previous work; hibernation saves system state to storage and resumes more slowly. A shutdown or restart ends the running session. Microsoft explains the differences between sleep, hibernate, and shutdown.

Some Windows computers use Modern Standby (S0 low-power idle), while others support traditional S3 sleep. A laptop may also move to hibernation or another low-power behavior after it has been asleep for a while, depending on its hardware and settings. Windows power states vary by device; the word “sleep” in a menu does not prove that the whole sleep-and-resume cycle completed normally.

On Windows, check whether it restarted
- Search for and open Event Viewer.
- Go to Windows Logs → System, then choose Filter Current Log.
- Filter for event IDs
41,1001,6008, and1074. - Compare the timestamps with when you closed the lid, chose Sleep, or expected the computer to wake.
- 41 (Kernel-Power): Windows detected that the previous shutdown was not clean. It can follow a crash, freeze, power interruption, or other abnormal shutdown; it does not identify the cause by itself.
- 6008: the previous shutdown was unexpected.
- 1001: Windows recorded a bug check, often associated with a stop error; the event may include crash-dump information.
- 1074: a user or process initiated a normal shutdown or restart. Check the event details to identify the process and reason recorded.
An Event 41 alongside 6008 supports the conclusion that Windows encountered an unclean shutdown, but neither proves a faulty power supply nor pinpoints a bad driver. If you find a 1001 event, the recorded bug-check and dump details can help identify what to investigate next. Microsoft’s Event 41 guidance explains why it is evidence of an unexpected shutdown, not a diagnosis. See also its guide to investigating unexpected restarts in system logs.
If you find no restart evidence, check Windows Reliability Monitor: search for reliability, then look for application failures around the time you woke the computer. That can help separate a single crashing app from an operating-system restart.
Most likely causes and the least disruptive tests
1. A sleep or wake driver, firmware, or device problem
Sleep and resume involve Windows, firmware, chipset, graphics, storage, battery, and connected devices. A fault in that chain can make a computer crash or restart while entering or leaving sleep. Start with Windows Update, then check the computer manufacturer’s support page for BIOS/UEFI or system-firmware updates and chipset, graphics, storage, and dock drivers. Use the PC maker’s site or Windows Update rather than a third-party “driver updater.”
If the trouble started immediately after a particular driver or system update, treat that timing as a clue: a controlled rollback or uninstall can help test whether it is involved. Then install a stable, supported version from the manufacturer. Avoid changing registry settings to force S3 sleep; unsupported sleep-state changes can break power behavior or vendor support.
2. A dock, monitor, or other peripheral
For one test, disconnect USB-C or Thunderbolt docks, external monitors, USB storage, printers, hubs, SD cards, and Bluetooth accessories. Test with only the built-in display, keyboard or trackpad, and power adapter. If the problem stops, reconnect one item at a time. The dock, display, device, or its driver may be implicated; the result is a useful lead, not proof of a specific root cause.

3. Battery or power interruption
Record whether it happens only on battery, only while plugged in, or after several hours asleep. Check the battery level on wake and note unusual heat, a loose or damaged connector, or an underpowered charger. A critically low battery can lead a computer to hibernate or shut down, but do not assume that is the cause unless the timing and power evidence fit. If the machine works on AC but not battery, investigate battery health and power management.
4. The computer was set to do something other than sleep
In Windows 11, open Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts and review the battery and plugged-in settings. If closing the lid triggers the issue, check the lid action under the related power settings, sometimes reached through Additional power settings or Control Panel. Labels and available choices vary by Windows version and device.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Test these separately: choose Sleep from the Start menu, close the lid, and let the timeout put the computer to sleep. If only one method fails, investigate that method’s setting or hardware—for example, the lid action or sensor—rather than treating every sleep transition as broken.
5. One app is crashing or not restoring its windows
If Windows stayed running and only one application vanished, update or reinstall that app and check Reliability Monitor for its failure. Remove a recently added plug-in, overlay, shell extension, or security integration as a controlled test. If failures appear tied to one Windows account, testing with another account can help distinguish an app or profile issue from a system-wide one. An app that reopens after a restart may have restored its windows; that does not mean its original process survived or that unsaved data was recovered.
Use hibernate as a diagnostic or temporary workaround
If available, temporarily assign Hibernate to the lid or power button and compare its behavior with Sleep. If hibernation resumes reliably while Sleep does not, that points toward a sleep/resume compatibility issue, such as a driver, firmware, Modern Standby, or peripheral interaction. It does not prove which one, and hibernate is not a guaranteed fix: it resumes more slowly, writes session state to storage, and may not be available on every PC.

To check supported states, open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run:
powercfg /a
Look for Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) (Modern Standby), Standby (S3) (traditional sleep, if supported), and Hibernate. The output depends on the computer’s firmware and configuration. Microsoft notes that hibernation is not available on all PCs, including some Modern Standby devices. If hibernate is missing, do not try to force it with registry changes.
Generate Windows sleep reports
On a Modern Standby system, an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt can create a SleepStudy report:
powercfg /sleepstudy /output "%USERPROFILE%Desktopsleepstudy.html"
For broader system-sleep diagnostics, run this from an elevated prompt:
powercfg /systemsleepdiagnostics /output "%USERPROFILE%Desktopsystem-sleep-diagnostics.html"
Open the resulting HTML file from your Desktop. Depending on the system and report, it can show sleep intervals, wake activity, and whether the computer spent extended time active or in low-power states. These reports provide clues, not an automatic repair or proof that a listed app or device caused the failure. Microsoft documents the powercfg options and their requirements; sleepstudy is intended for Modern Standby systems, and systemsleepdiagnostics requires an elevated prompt.

What to do after a sleep-related crash
- Save work and enable autosave where available. Do not repeatedly force the computer off unless it is completely unresponsive.
- Record whether it was on battery or AC, how long it was asleep, what devices were connected, and whether you saw a boot screen or restart message.
- Check Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor before making several changes at once.
- Test without peripherals, then update Windows and supported manufacturer firmware and drivers.
- If a recent driver or update strongly matches when the problem began, test a rollback or uninstall, then use a supported stable version.
- Use hibernate temporarily if it is available and reliable, while keeping in mind that it does not fix the underlying cause.
Fast Startup is different from ordinary Sleep: it affects shutdown and startup by saving kernel and driver state to a hibernation file. Disabling it can be a controlled troubleshooting test in a relevant shutdown/startup problem, but it is not a universal fix for apps disappearing after sleep. Microsoft’s Fast Startup documentation describes that distinction.
If you use a Mac
Mac sleep is also intended to preserve open apps and documents. Apple’s Safe Sleep saves the current state so it can be recovered if a laptop fully powers down during sleep. If apps disappear, look for the message “Your computer was restarted because of a problem” or an Apple logo/startup screen; either suggests a restart rather than a normal wake. Apple explains Safe Sleep.
- Install available macOS and app updates, then test with external devices disconnected.
- Start in Safe Mode. On Apple silicon, shut down, hold the power button until startup options appear, select a volume, hold Shift, then choose Continue in Safe Mode. On an Intel Mac, restart and immediately hold Shift until the login window appears. Apple’s Safe Mode guide has the steps.
- If the problem persists, remove recently installed third-party extensions, plug-ins, or system utilities, and run Apple Diagnostics. For repeated unexpected restarts, follow Apple’s restart troubleshooting guidance.
The macOS setting “Reopen windows when logging back in” can affect what returns after a restart, but it cannot recover unsaved work or guarantee that every app will reopen. Apple explains how app and window reopening works. If only one app quits, Apple also recommends checking for app updates and compatibility, and investigating third-party plug-ins where relevant (app troubleshooting guidance).
When to contact support
Contact the computer maker—especially if the device is under warranty—if it repeatedly restarts from sleep after supported updates and peripheral isolation, produces bug-check or hardware-related errors, loses work, or cannot wake reliably. Share the timestamps, Event Viewer IDs or Mac restart message, powercfg reports where applicable, power conditions, and connected devices. That evidence is more useful than saying only that “sleep closes my apps.”
