The glowing, twisting clouds seen over northern Norway were part of NASA’s Vorticity Experiment (VortEx), not an attempt to change the weather or create an aurora. On November 10, 2024, two sounding rockets launched from Andøya Space carrying instruments and trimethyl aluminum (TMA) tracers. Released high above ordinary weather, the material formed visible wisps that researchers photographed to track upper-atmospheric winds and study gravity waves, vortices and turbulence.
What happened over Norway?
NASA and its partners flew the final two rockets in the VortEx campaign from Andøya Space, near Andenes in northern Norway. According to the launch provider, the first rocket lifted off at about 21:36 UTC on November 10, 2024, and the second followed roughly two minutes later. The higher-flying vehicle reached an apogee of about 358 kilometers; the lower one reached about 144 kilometers. Those peak altitudes are not the same as the experiment’s main observation region, which was roughly 90 to 120 kilometers above Earth.
One payload deployed 16 rocket-powered ampules or canisters containing TMA. As the material dispersed and reacted in the upper atmosphere, it formed visible trails and cloud-like shapes. Ground stations photographed the tracers from multiple viewpoints. NASA’s VortEx mission overview and Andøya Space’s launch account describe the launch and its scientific purpose.

- natural color close to white , can be painted the color you want, easy to track or entertainment
- Ideal for fairs aerial photos, meteorologists, science projects and grand openings.
- 72‘’ balloon Approximately 100 grams of items can be lifted (not accurate calculation, only approximate value, you need to measure it after you buy the balloon)
- These balloons must be filled with helium if they want to float up. You need to buy helium locally or fill it with hydrogen in a laboratory to ensure safety (dangerous, not recommended for ordinary people).
Were they real clouds?
They looked like clouds, but they were not meteorological clouds made of condensed water or ice droplets at ordinary weather altitudes. They were dispersed chemical vapor tracers, made visible through atmospheric reactions and illumination. NASA uses “cloud” descriptively for the spreading structures. The exact way a tracer appears depends on its chemistry and lighting; it is better not to assume the material simply glowed by itself.
- Weather clouds consist of water droplets or ice crystals.
- VortEx tracer clouds were deliberately released material used to make air motion visible.
- Noctilucent clouds are naturally occurring, very high-altitude ice clouds—another phenomenon entirely.
- Auroras are light produced when energetic particles interact with the atmosphere.
NASA’s vapor-tracer explainer describes how scientists use releases like these to observe otherwise invisible winds. A separate NASA mission, Super Soaker, deliberately created artificial ice clouds to study noctilucent clouds; that was not what VortEx did.
How can a glowing trail reveal wind?
The TMA was a marker, not a wind sensor. Once released, its changing position and shape showed how the surrounding air was moving. Researchers could compare images taken at known times to infer wind direction and, with position and timing information, estimate speed. Stretching, bending and spreading could also reveal differences between layers, turbulent deformation and possible swirling flow.

A single photograph offers only a snapshot, and one camera’s view has limits. VortEx used multiple releases and observation sites so researchers could compare the tracers’ motion from different angles and reconstruct more of their spatial movement. The launch provider reported four observation sites. The tracer images were one part of the experiment, to be considered alongside rocket instruments and other observations—not a complete wind map on their own.
A curl in a picture is not, by itself, proof of one coherent vortex. Scientists look for patterns over time and across observations to determine what kind of flow produced the shape. VortEx was designed to investigate vortex-forming dynamics and turbulence, not to declare every photographed spiral a vortex.
What are atmospheric gravity waves?
Despite the name, atmospheric gravity waves are not gravitational waves: they are motions in a fluid, not ripples in spacetime. When air in a stably layered atmosphere is pushed upward or downward, buoyancy tends to restore it. That restoring force produces waves that can travel upward through the atmosphere. As the waves encounter changing winds and density, they can grow, interact, break or transfer energy and momentum.

VortEx examined how these waves interact with surrounding airflow and whether those interactions create larger swirling structures and stratified turbulence. The term mesoscale describes motions on intermediate scales; the mission’s research materials describe structures spanning roughly 10 to 500 kilometers. Such motions can be too small or short-lived for some atmospheric models to resolve individually, even though their combined effects matter.

Andøya is an established high-latitude sounding-rocket site. Its location gives researchers access to polar and auroral-region atmospheric conditions, while winter darkness can make faint tracers easier to photograph. The range also has rocket infrastructure, observation networks and a flight corridor over the Norwegian Sea. Multiple ground stations are especially useful: comparing their views helps researchers work out where the tracers moved in three dimensions.
The target region is a challenging part of the atmosphere to measure. It is too high for ordinary aircraft and weather balloons, yet not sampled as readily as some orbital altitudes by satellites. Better measurements of waves and turbulence can help scientists understand energy transfer between atmospheric layers, improve models of upper-atmospheric circulation and mixing, and refine knowledge of near-space conditions that affect satellites, including drag.

Was it an aurora or weather modification?
No: the VortEx tracers were neither an aurora nor weather modification. They may have appeared against or near auroral activity, but auroras arise from energetic particles guided by Earth’s magnetic field. The tracer clouds came from a timed rocket release so their motion could be observed. The mission was not designed to seed rain, control precipitation, change the climate or manufacture the northern lights.
| Feature | VortEx tracer clouds | Aurora |
|---|---|---|
| Cause | Rocket-released chemical vapor | Energetic particles interacting with the atmosphere |
| Purpose or driver | Scientific marker for studying air motion | Natural display driven by space weather |
| Typical appearance | Spreading trails, wisps, curls or blobs | Arcs, curtains, rays or diffuse bands |
| Timing | Released at a planned time and place | Varies with geomagnetic activity |
Not every photograph of a glowing shape over Norway can be identified as VortEx from appearance alone. Rocket exhaust illuminated at twilight, natural aurora, noctilucent clouds, aircraft contrails and camera artifacts can produce confusing images. NASA’s 2019 AZURE mission also released tracers from Andøya, but studied auroral winds. Date, location, launch records and the circumstances of an image matter as much as how it looks.
Was the TMA release dangerous?
Trimethyl aluminum is hazardous as a concentrated material on the ground, so it should not be described as intrinsically harmless. But the VortEx payload released small tracer quantities at high altitude as part of a regulated sounding-rocket campaign, with rockets and payloads directed to fall into the sea. The cited NASA and Andøya mission descriptions do not indicate a public-health or weather hazard from the visible clouds. That is a bounded statement about this controlled, high-altitude experiment—not a claim that TMA is safe to handle or that any rocket activity has zero risk.

Which date should you trust?
November 10, 2024 is the best-supported date for the final VortEx pair: it appears in NASA program reports and Andøya Space’s launch announcement. A NASA feature page has also displayed November 15, creating a discrepancy. The contemporaneous launch-site account and program reports support November 10, so the later date should not be treated as settled.
For the primary mission accounts, see NASA’s 2024 Wallops annual report, the 2025 Sounding Rocket Program annual report, and Andøya Space’s launch report.
