Chrome’s “File may be dangerous” warning means its download protections found a risk signal or could not verify the file well enough to treat it as safe. It does not always mean malware was confirmed, but it is a reason to stop before opening the file. Don’t turn off Safe Browsing or bypass the warning until you have independently checked the file and its source.
What Chrome’s warning means
Chrome uses Google Safe Browsing and other download protections to assess signals such as a file’s reputation, download URL, host, type, and behavior. A warning can reflect known or suspected malware, unwanted software, an unfamiliar file with little reputation, an encrypted archive that is hard to inspect, or an insecure download connection. It is not necessarily the result of a complete antivirus scan of every byte. Google describes these warning categories in its Chrome download safety guidance.
The wording can vary by Chrome version, operating system, and language. Read the exact status in Chrome’s Downloads page before deciding what to do.
| Warning or status | What it generally indicates | Safer default response |
|---|---|---|
| Dangerous download blocked | Chrome or Safe Browsing has classified the download, URL, host, or associated behavior as dangerous. | Cancel it and investigate the source; don’t treat the warning as a routine prompt to override. |
| This file may be dangerous | The file is suspicious or could not be verified confidently, including in some cases an encrypted archive. | Cancel unless you can authenticate the source and independently verify the file. |
| Uncommon download | The file has limited reputation or distribution; new releases and small developers can trigger this without the file being proven malicious. | Verify the publisher, version, and file before opening it. |
| Unverified download | Safe Browsing is off or otherwise unable to verify the download. | Restore Safe Browsing protection and retry from the official source. |
| Insecure download | The file’s delivery connection is not adequately protected. | Look for a secure download from the publisher, rather than accepting an insecure copy. |
| Virus detected | A security layer identified a threat; the message may come from antivirus software or the operating system rather than Chrome itself. | Do not restore or run the file before checking the security product’s protection history. |
Why a legitimate file can still be blocked
A new utility, an internal company tool, a release from a small developer, or a file on a recently created domain may have too little reputation data. “Uncommon” means “not sufficiently established,” not “proven safe.” Malware is also frequently new or repackaged, so low reputation is a useful warning even when it is not a malware diagnosis.

A site can be compromised and host a harmful file without the real publisher’s knowledge. A trusted-looking name, a familiar page, or HTTPS does not settle the question: HTTPS protects the connection in transit; it does not certify that the file is harmless or that the site has not been compromised. Google discusses the distinction between secure connections and dangerous content in its Chrome security guidance.
Chrome also applies extra scrutiny to file types that can run code or change a system, such as installers, executables, scripts, macro-enabled documents, disk images, extensions, and archives containing executable files. The classifications can change, so there is no permanent list of extensions that are always blocked.
Check the warning and verify the file before retrying
- Read the exact status. In desktop Chrome, open the three-dot menu and select Downloads. Find the item and note the warning text. Google’s instructions for download warnings and download errors explain common statuses.
- Return to the publisher’s official site. Check the domain carefully for misspellings or lookalikes. Confirm that the publisher identifies the exact filename and version and that the download link is part of its official release information. Avoid unexpected redirects and unofficial mirrors.
- Check the publisher’s checksum or signature, if available. On Windows, open PowerShell and run
Get-FileHash "C:Pathtodownloaded-file.exe" -Algorithm SHA256. Compare the displayed hash with the checksum published by the developer. A matching hash shows that the file matches that published value; it does not prove that the publisher or its site is trustworthy. A valid digital signature helps identify the signer, but a signature alone is not a guarantee that software is safe. - Use a second security check carefully. Scan with the operating system’s security tools or a reputable security product. A clean result is evidence, not proof. Don’t upload confidential documents, personal records, credentials, private photos, or proprietary code to public scanning services; an uploaded file may not remain private.
- Check for device management. On a work or school device, an administrator may intentionally block a file type or prevent overrides. Contact IT instead of trying to defeat the restriction.
- Prefer a safer distribution route. If available, use the publisher’s signed installer, official app store, trusted package manager, verified repository, or vendor update mechanism. Don’t switch to an unofficial download site just because the official file was flagged.
Do not proceed with a crack, key generator, activator, unsolicited attachment, pop-up download, or an executable from an unidentified publisher. A site that claims your computer is infected and urges you to install a tool is another reason to stop.

Should you download a blocked file anyway?
Only consider an override after you have verified the source and file independently and understand the remaining risk. For example, a known publisher may confirm the exact filename and hash, and the file may have a valid signature. Even then, ask the publisher for a corrected or newly signed copy first when possible.
On desktop Chrome, the documented route is Chrome menu → Downloads → the file’s More menu → Download dangerous file, if that option appears. Google labels this as not recommended. It may be absent because an administrator disabled bypassing, a policy blocks the download, or Chrome applies a stronger restriction. See Google’s instructions for downloading a warned-about file.
Do not use the override as a shortcut for a “Virus detected” result, a pirated application, an unknown password-protected archive, or a file that asks you to disable security software. On managed devices, follow the organization’s process.

Why password-protected archives trigger warnings
Encryption can prevent ordinary automated checks from inspecting the archive’s contents. Malware distributors sometimes use password-protected ZIP, 7Z, or RAR files for that reason. Chrome can ask for an archive password in some cases and check supported archives, but the result depends on the protection and contents; an inconclusive result is not clearance. Google explains archive checks in its download safety guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm that the archive is expected and hosted on the publisher’s real domain.
- Get the password from the publisher’s official documentation, not an unknown file-sharing page or unrelated message.
- Check what the archive is supposed to contain and whether the publisher provides a checksum for the archive or extracted file.
- Treat an unexplained archive containing an installer or executable as high risk.
Check whether Chrome, Windows, antivirus software, or IT blocked it
People often call any download warning a Chrome block, but several layers can intervene. The location and exact wording help identify which one needs attention.
- Chrome or Safe Browsing: The warning appears in Chrome’s Downloads page and uses wording such as “Dangerous download blocked,” “Uncommon download,” or “This file may be dangerous.”
- Windows security settings: A “Download blocked” error can reflect Windows Attachment Manager or another computer security setting, according to Chrome’s download troubleshooting guidance.
- Antivirus or Microsoft Defender: “Virus detected” or “Virus scan failed” can mean security software stopped or removed the file during or after download. Check its quarantine or protection history rather than assuming Chrome is responsible.
- Work or school policy: A greyed-out control, missing bypass option, or organization-branded notice may mean Chrome is managed. Administrators can restrict risky downloads and bypasses through enterprise policies; see Chrome Enterprise download controls and managed download restrictions.
Restore Safe Browsing instead of turning it off
If Safe Browsing was disabled, re-enable it rather than using that setting to make a file download. On desktop Chrome, go to Chrome menu → Settings → Privacy and security → Security → Safe Browsing, then select Standard protection or Enhanced protection. Google identifies Standard as the default and recommends against No protection; see its Safe Browsing settings guidance.

| Setting | Protection and privacy trade-off |
|---|---|
| Standard protection | The default level, with protection against known dangerous sites and downloads. It uses privacy-preserving checks in ordinary cases and may send more information when suspicious behavior needs additional analysis. |
| Enhanced protection | Offers more real-time analysis and checks for emerging threats. Depending on the event and workflow, additional security-related information—such as URLs, parts of page content, download information, extension activity, or system information—may be sent to Google Safe Browsing. |
| No protection | Turns off Safe Browsing protections in Chrome. It is not a safe general-purpose fix for a blocked download. |

What to do depends on whether the file merely downloaded or actually ran. A single clean scan cannot establish that a machine is uncompromised.
Downloaded, but did not open
- Delete the file and empty the Recycle Bin or Trash if appropriate.
- Run a security scan and do not restore the file simply because the download was interrupted.
- Download again only from a verified official source after resolving why the original was flagged.
Ran an executable or script
- If you see suspicious activity, disconnect the device from the internet.
- Do not enter passwords or financial details on that device while investigating.
- Run a full security scan; review recently installed applications, browser extensions, startup items, and scheduled tasks for changes you do not recognize.
- If compromise is plausible, change important passwords from a separate, trusted device. For a work or business computer, contact IT or a qualified incident-response professional.
Entered credentials or granted administrator access
If you entered account details after running the file, change those passwords from a separate trusted device and contact the relevant service or your organization’s IT team. A Windows User Account Control prompt only asks permission for elevated access; it is not evidence that the program is safe.

Opened a document
Be wary of macro-enabled Office files that ask you to select “Enable Content,” PDFs that launch external programs, HTML files that imitate login pages, and scripts hidden in archives. If you enabled active content or notice suspicious behavior, treat the event as a possible compromise and use the response steps above.
If you publish the file
A legitimate download can be flagged if a site was hacked, unwanted software was bundled with the file, the download host has a poor reputation, the file is new or rarely distributed, or the release or signing process was compromised. Google says a harmful-download warning can indicate that a site offers malware or unwanted software, potentially because an attacker added it; see its security-issues guidance for site owners.
- Confirm the warning and identify the affected URL and file.
- Inspect the site and server for compromise; remove malicious or unwanted files and replace affected downloads with clean copies.
- Scan hosted content and review the build, signing, and release pipeline.
- Publish clear release information, valid signatures, and checksums for authentic downloads.
- After cleanup, request a security review through the applicable Google site-owner tools.
Moving the same file to a new domain does not fix a compromised file or release process and may make the download look more suspicious.
