Gifted is not a superhero movie, a mathematics tutorial, or a simple children’s film. Marc Webb’s 2017 PG-13 drama works because Chris Evans plays Frank Adler, a grieving guardian trying to give his mathematically gifted niece, Mary, a childhood rather than an achievement program. Its warmth is interpretive rather than a proven streaming trend, but the film remains an appealing choice for viewers seeking a humane, emotionally accessible drama.

What is Gifted about?
Frank Adler is raising his late sister’s seven-year-old daughter, Mary, in coastal Florida. Mary is a mathematical prodigy, but Frank wants her to attend school, make friends, play, and experience an ordinary childhood.

That plan conflicts with the wishes of Mary’s grandmother, Evelyn, who believes the girl’s extraordinary ability must be developed as fully as possible. Their disagreement becomes a custody battle, forcing the adults to argue over education, responsibility, family history, and what Mary actually needs.

The film’s subject is not really mathematics. It is the competing ways people express love—and the danger of allowing adults’ ambitions, fears, or unresolved conflicts to determine a child’s future. Evelyn is not merely a villain; she and Frank hold sincerely different ideas about how Mary should be protected and prepared.
Gifted was released in 2017, directed by Marc Webb, and runs for approximately 1 hour 41 minutes.
Chris Evans without the shield
Evans is best known to many viewers as Captain America, but Frank Adler requires an entirely different kind of performance. He is not a leader saving the day or an action hero solving a crisis. He is a tired, defensive, funny, loving man handling school problems, household routines, grief, and legal pressure.
Evans gives Frank emotional credibility by keeping him imperfect. Frank can be stubborn and reactive, and his desire to protect Mary sometimes risks becoming another form of control. Yet he is consistently present. His care appears in boundaries, practical decisions, humor, and the ordinary work of raising a child.
That groundedness is the performance’s appeal. Frank’s emotional victories are small and personal rather than spectacular. Evans’ chemistry with Mckenna Grace gives the film its center, making the custody dispute feel like a relationship under threat rather than an abstract debate about gifted education.
Mckenna Grace makes Mary more than a plot device
Mary is intellectually advanced, but she is still seven. She can understand mathematical ideas far beyond her classmates while remaining funny, stubborn, frightened, and easily hurt. Her intelligence gives her opportunities, but it also isolates her and attracts adult expectations she cannot reasonably manage alone.

Grace’s performance preserves that contradiction. Mary is not written as a miniature adult who exists only to amaze the audience. She wants affection and belonging as much as intellectual challenge. Her scenes with Frank expose the emotional cost of the adults’ argument and keep the story focused on a child rather than on the prestige of her talent.

Without Mary’s vulnerability, the custody case would be a familiar courtroom setup. With it, the central question becomes urgent: are the adults deciding what is best for Mary, or deciding what her gifts mean to them?
Why the film can feel uplifting
It finds meaning in everyday care
Frank’s love is expressed through routines and protection rather than grand declarations. The film treats school, friendship, household rules, and emotional reassurance as important parts of a child’s development. That emphasis can feel restorative for viewers tired of stories in which achievement is the only measure of a worthwhile life.
It values the whole child
Gifted asks whether exceptional ability should automatically cancel out play, social development, and emotional safety. Its hopeful argument is not that giftedness should be ignored. It is that talent should not erase the person who possesses it.
It offers hope without pretending conflict is simple
The film does not present grief, family conflict, or extraordinary ability as problems with an easy technical solution. Its optimism comes from the possibility that adults can reconsider their priorities and see Mary as a whole person. The resolution is reassuring, though viewers who prefer strict realism may find it tidier than life.
It is emotionally accessible
At 1 hour 41 minutes, Gifted is a relatively compact drama. Its premise is immediately understandable, its relationships are clearly drawn, and its tone is warmer than many custody stories. That makes it a plausible comfort watch even for viewers who are not specifically interested in mathematics or education.

Is Gifted genuinely feel-good?
For many viewers, the answer will be yes—but with a qualification. The guardian-child bond, supportive side characters, emphasis on empathy, and hopeful resolution provide the film’s uplifting qualities.
At the same time, the custody conflict is deliberately constructed to produce strong emotion. The courtroom material follows familiar dramatic patterns, and some educational and family-law questions are simplified. The sentimental moments may comfort one viewer and feel carefully engineered to another.
Rotten Tomatoes lists a 73% critics’ score from 180 reviews and an 85% audience score from more than 10,000 ratings on the page accessed during research. Its critics’ consensus describes the film as engaging but somewhat predictable. Those figures do not prove that the movie improves viewers’ moods, but they do support a more balanced conclusion: Gifted has broad emotional appeal alongside recognizable melodramatic conventions. What the film gets right—and simplifies
The film’s strongest idea is that Mary’s potential does not belong to the adults around her. Frank’s instinct to protect her from pressure is understandable, but it can also limit her. Evelyn’s insistence on maximizing Mary’s ability recognizes a genuine opportunity, but it risks treating childhood as an obstacle to achievement.
That tension gives the story more substance than a straightforward “good guardian versus bad grandmother” narrative. The adults are also arguing through their own family history, which makes their concern for Mary inseparable from old resentments and regrets.
Still, viewers seeking a detailed portrait of gifted education, mathematical development, or family law should look elsewhere. Gifted uses those subjects to build an emotional family drama; it does not offer a comprehensive practical model.

Is it suitable for children?
Gifted is rated PG-13, so it should not be treated as an all-ages family movie. Prime Video’s advisory identifies violence, alcohol use, strong language, and sexual content. The story also includes grief, adult arguments, custody litigation, and emotionally difficult family conflict.

Younger children may find the adult conflict confusing or the material inappropriate. The mathematics is part of the plot, not an instructional lesson.
Why viewers may be finding it now
There is a reasonable explanation for catalog rediscovery, but no verified evidence here of a current Prime Video chart position or major viewership surge. Evans’ continuing visibility can send audiences back to less franchise-driven films in his catalogue. Prime Video also makes older titles easy to encounter through search, recommendations, rental, and purchase pages.
Gifted is particularly discoverable because its premise is easy to understand: a famous actor, a gifted child, and a family fight over what childhood should look like. Its themes—achievement pressure, parenting, grief, and belonging—also remain broadly relatable.
That supports calling it a renewed or plausible discovery, not a confirmed streaming hit. Claims that viewers are flocking to it or that it is among Prime Video’s most-watched films would require current, independently verifiable data.

- Poor fit: Anyone who strongly dislikes courtroom melodrama or sentimental storytelling.
Should you rent or buy it on Prime Video?
Renting makes the most sense if you want a single viewing or are unsure whether the film’s emotional style will work for you. Buying is more defensible if you expect repeat family viewing or want a permanent digital copy.
