The Xbox app does not show every clip stored on an Xbox or Windows PC. A console capture may still be local, waiting to upload, saved to an external drive, or past Xbox network storage’s 90-day retention period. A Windows Xbox Game Bar recording may be only a local file, while a OneDrive backup is separate from the Xbox app’s capture view.
Start by finding the clip on the device that made it. Then check where it is stored, whether it uploaded, and whether the app is using the same Microsoft account and Xbox profile.
First, identify where the clip was created
“Xbox clips” can mean several different things, and they do not all sync to the same place:

- Xbox console captures may be on the console, an attached storage device, the Xbox network, or backed up to OneDrive.
- Windows Xbox Game Bar captures may be local video or image files on the PC. The Xbox app for Windows can show some of these in the relevant game hub, but that does not mean they are cloud captures available in the mobile app. Xbox describes PC game hubs as showing Game Bar captures stored on the PC: Xbox’s game hubs announcement.
- Third-party recordings made with OBS, NVIDIA ShadowPlay, AMD Adrenalin, Steam, or a game’s own replay feature generally remain in that tool’s storage location. Do not expect them to appear automatically as Xbox captures.
- OneDrive backups and USB-drive copies are separate destinations. A clip can be safe there without appearing in the Xbox app.
That distinction determines which troubleshooting steps will help. An app refresh cannot retrieve a file that was never uploaded to a location the app can access.

Check the original device before troubleshooting the app
On an Xbox console
Open the console’s Captures app. Xbox’s documented route is My games & apps → See all → Apps → Captures. Menu wording can vary by console software version, language, and region. If needed, see Xbox’s captures and backup announcement.
Look for the clip and note whether it plays, appears to be waiting for upload, is stored locally or on an external drive, or has a deletion warning. A clip visible on the console is not necessarily uploaded. If it is absent from Captures, check any connected external storage before assuming the app is at fault. If the original device no longer has the clip, the app usually cannot restore it unless another copy exists in OneDrive or elsewhere.
On a Windows PC
If you used Xbox Game Bar, check the PC’s configured Game Bar capture folder and the Xbox app’s hub for the game. Where available, use the capture’s option to open its file location or copy it. If the recording was made with another program, look in that program’s output folder instead. A local PC recording may never have been uploaded to Xbox network storage, so it may not appear in the Xbox mobile app.

If the clip is on the console but missing from the app
- Confirm it has uploaded. Check the capture’s status on the console and retry the upload or sharing action if available. Keep the console online while it completes.
- Check the account. Make sure the console and Xbox mobile or Windows app use the same Microsoft account and Xbox profile that created the capture. Check for a recently selected alternate profile, a family account, or a second Microsoft account on the phone or PC. If OneDrive is involved, check that it is signed in to the account used for the backup.
- Refresh the connection. Restart the console, open Captures again, and retry. Then try another network if possible. Temporarily turn off a VPN or restrictive network filter to see whether it is interfering.
- Give processing time, especially for a large clip. Long, high-resolution, or HDR recordings can take longer to transfer or process. Keep the original copy while you wait; do not delete it just because it has not appeared yet.
- Make a brief test capture. Check whether a short, standard-resolution clip appears on the console and then in the app. If the test works but one older or larger clip does not, the problem may be specific to that file or its upload rather than a general app failure.
Xbox has documented capture-upload and storage issues involving OneDrive and internal or external drives in release notes. That means a failed transfer is not automatically proof that the app is broken; it can involve storage, upload, or console software. Refresh the app only after confirming the storage path
Xbox mobile app
- Force-close the app and reopen it.
- Sign out, then sign back in to the account that made the capture.
- Install any pending Xbox app update and restart the phone.
- Try both Wi-Fi and cellular data. Temporarily disable a VPN or network filter if you use one.

Xbox app for Windows
- Close and reopen the Xbox app; sign out and back in if needed.
- Install pending Xbox app and Gaming Services updates through Microsoft Store, then restart Windows.
- Open the game’s hub or capture area rather than assuming every capture appears in a general list.
- If Game Bar made the clip, open its local file location directly.
Reinstalling the app is not a first-line recovery step: it cannot restore a capture that was never uploaded or has been deleted from Xbox network storage. For recording-specific guidance, see Xbox’s troubleshooting page for recording game clips.

Xbox announced that captures stored on the Xbox network are deleted after 90 days. This limit applies to captures in Xbox network storage, not to every local PC file or every OneDrive copy. Xbox also describes backing up existing captures to OneDrive or external storage through the console’s Captures app. See Xbox’s announcement of the retention policy and backup options.

If only older clips are missing, check the Captures app for a deletion warning and look for a copy in OneDrive, a connected USB drive, or the original PC. If a clip is in OneDrive but not the Xbox app, that can be expected: open or share it from OneDrive rather than trying to make the Xbox app display a separate backup. Check OneDrive storage availability as well as the account used for the backup.

Do not assume every capture uploads automatically. Upload and backup behavior can depend on device, settings, connection, storage destination, and capture format. If the console was offline, its capture may remain local until it reconnects and the upload succeeds. Keep that local copy until you have verified the destination copy.
Less common cases
- Only 4K or HDR clips are missing: Format-specific upload or backup behavior is possible, but it is not a universal explanation. Xbox preview notes have recorded 4K/HDR automatic OneDrive-upload limitations; treat that as a reason to test, not proof that every such clip is affected. Preserve the original and try a short standard-resolution capture for comparison. See Xbox’s preview release notes.
- Other people cannot see the clip: That is different from the owner being unable to find it. Once you have confirmed the capture exists and is uploaded, check sharing, privacy, online-safety, or family settings. Those settings are more relevant to who can view or share a capture than to whether a local file exists.
- External drive not connected or readable: Reconnect it to the device that stored the capture and check whether the file is still there before moving or deleting anything.
- Only the newest clips are missing: Check upload status, connection, account, available storage, and capture settings before focusing on the 90-day retention policy.
When might a clip be unrecoverable?
A clip may be unrecoverable if it is missing from the original console or PC, absent from attached storage and OneDrive, and no longer available on the Xbox network—for example, after the network-storage retention period. Before reaching that conclusion, check the account that created it, the console’s Captures app, the PC’s local Game Bar folder or other recorder’s output folder, OneDrive, and any external drive.
If the clip still exists locally but will not upload, preserve it and note the device, capture date, account, clip length, resolution, and intended destination. Test with a short standard-resolution capture and use Xbox’s in-product reporting or official support process if uploads continue to fail. Avoid resetting the console or deleting local captures before confirming you have a backup.
