If YouTube won’t let you download a video, the reason is usually one of three things: you’re not signed in to an eligible YouTube Premium account, that particular video or region doesn’t support offline viewing, or the download is being blocked by your device, connection, or storage. There’s another common misunderstanding: YouTube’s official download is an encrypted offline copy for playback inside YouTube—not a normal MP4 file that appears in Photos or your Downloads folder.
Start by identifying what you mean by “download”: offline viewing in YouTube, saving a video you uploaded, downloading a purchased movie, installing the YouTube app, or getting a transferable video file. The fix depends on which one you need.
First, what are you trying to download?
- Watch a video offline inside YouTube: Use YouTube’s Download button. In the United States, an active Premium membership is generally needed for ordinary videos. Free offline downloads are limited to eligible videos in selected countries; the United States is not on YouTube’s current published list. YouTube explains offline downloads and availability, and its country and region guidance has the current details.
- Save a video as an MP4 or another ordinary file: YouTube’s official offline-download feature does not provide a transferable file. Downloads are encrypted for playback through YouTube.
- Download a video you uploaded: YouTube provides a separate route for retrieving your own uploads. This does not grant a way to download other creators’ videos. See YouTube’s download help or open YouTube Studio.
- Download a purchased or rented movie or TV episode: This uses a separate system. Eligible titles can be downloaded in the YouTube app on supported iOS and Android devices without Premium, subject to account, device, title, and rental restrictions. See YouTube’s movie and TV download rules.
- Install the YouTube app: That is an app-store, device compatibility, or storage issue—not a video-download problem.
Why the Download button is missing
- You don’t have Premium, or it isn’t active. In the United States and many other locations, Premium is generally required for offline downloads of ordinary videos. Premium enables downloads for eligible videos; it does not guarantee that every video can be saved offline. Check Premium availability and plans for your location.
- You’re signed in to the wrong Google account. Premium downloads must use the account that owns the membership. This is easy to miss if you use multiple accounts, a family plan, or bought Premium through Apple. On iPhone or iPad, YouTube says to use the YouTube account associated with the iTunes purchase. Check YouTube’s membership troubleshooting steps and iOS purchase guidance.
- The video isn’t eligible for offline playback. Availability can depend on the video, region, licensing, or other YouTube restrictions. A Premium membership cannot override every restriction.
- Offline downloads aren’t available for your location or content type. Free downloads are limited to selected countries and videos. Availability can also change, so check YouTube’s current location guidance rather than relying on an old country list.
- You’re using an unsupported browser or unofficial app. For computer downloads, YouTube lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera; support may not be available in other browsers. If an unofficial app says content isn’t available, switch to the official YouTube app or YouTube.com and update the app. See computer download instructions and YouTube’s guidance on unsupported third-party apps.
- You’ve reached the device limit. Premium offline features can be used on up to 10 devices at a time, with up to four device swaps in a year. Reinstalling the app can count as a new device registration, so repeated reinstalls may make a limit problem worse. Details are in YouTube’s device limits help.
How to download a video with YouTube
Use the official YouTube app on mobile, or a supported browser on a computer. The video must be eligible, and you must be signed in to the account associated with Premium where Premium is required. YouTube may rename tabs or move controls as its interface changes.
Android
- Open the YouTube app and sign in to the correct account.
- Open the video’s watch page and tap Download below the video.
- When the download finishes, find the video in YouTube’s Downloads area.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the YouTube app and sign in to the correct account.
- Open the video and tap Download.
- Open the You tab to find downloads.
The download is for playback in YouTube; it is not intended to appear in the iPhone Photos app. See YouTube’s iOS download guidance.

Computer
- Open YouTube.com in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Opera and sign in.
- Open the video and select Download below it.
- Choose Downloads from YouTube’s left-side menu to find it.

If the download starts but fails
- Use a reliable connection. Weak connectivity can interrupt downloads. YouTube gives roughly 3 Mbps or faster as a baseline, but actual needs vary with quality and network conditions. Try a stable Wi-Fi connection, then retry. Its download troubleshooting guide covers connection issues.
- Check cellular-data access and download settings. YouTube may be set to download only on Wi-Fi. In the app, check Profile picture > Settings > Background & downloads for the Wi-Fi-only or mobile-data setting. On iPhone or iPad, also check Settings > Cellular and make sure cellular data is enabled for YouTube. Mobile downloads can use substantial data, especially at higher quality.
- Free up storage. A full device or SD card can prevent a download. On supported Android devices with an SD card, open YouTube and go to Profile picture > Settings > Background & downloads, then turn on Use SD card. Existing downloads cannot simply be moved between internal storage and an SD card: delete them, select the new storage location, and download them again. See YouTube’s SD-card instructions.
- Retry a failed download. If YouTube shows the option, open the download’s menu and choose Retry download. Check that YouTube is permitted to use the connection you’re trying to download over.
- Confirm the membership is recognized. In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture and open Settings > Purchases and memberships. Confirm Premium is active and that the displayed Google account owns it. If the account is correct but YouTube does not recognize Premium, sign out and back in to that account. If you recently resubscribed, saved videos may take several hours to reappear; try again afterward.
Why your download isn’t in Photos or the Downloads folder
YouTube’s official download is a temporary, encrypted copy for offline playback through YouTube. It is linked to the account and device, is not normally accessible as a standalone media file, and is subject to periodic online checks. So if you tapped Download successfully but can’t find an MP4 in your gallery or computer’s ordinary Downloads folder, that is expected behavior—not necessarily a failed download. Downloads can expire or disappear
Offline videos are not permanent copies. For Premium downloads, YouTube says playback can generally continue offline for up to 29 days before the device must reconnect so YouTube can check the video and account. Some countries or regions use a 48-hour period instead. For free offline downloads in selected locations, the usual period can be up to 48 hours, while some regions allow certain non-music videos to remain available for up to 29 days. A download may also stop working if Premium ends, the video is removed or blocked, or its offline availability changes. Reconnect to the internet, confirm the account and membership, and check whether YouTube still offers the Download option. If Premium has just been restored, allow time for saved videos to reappear before downloading again.

Special cases: your uploads and purchased movies
Your own uploaded videos
If you are retrieving a video you uploaded, use YouTube’s own tools or YouTube Studio rather than the offline-viewing feature for other videos. This is the appropriate route for your own content; it does not apply to videos uploaded by other creators.
Purchased or rented movies and TV
Eligible purchased and rented titles follow separate rules and do not require Premium. Download through the YouTube app on a supported iPhone, iPad, or Android device while signed in to the Google account used for the purchase. Purchased titles can be downloaded on up to five devices; a rental can be downloaded on one device at a time and remains subject to its rental period. YouTube’s help page says UHD is not available for download. Check the title-specific rules if a movie will not download.

If the YouTube app itself won’t install
Check whether your device and operating system are supported, whether the official app store is working, whether the app is disabled, and whether the device has enough storage. Avoid unofficial clients. If one reports that content is unavailable on the app, YouTube recommends the official YouTube app or YouTube.com; see YouTube’s guidance on unsupported apps.

Random converter sites, browser extensions, APKs, and unofficial apps are not a reliable fix. They can expose you to deceptive buttons, aggressive ads, tracking, malware, or credential theft, and may create copyright or terms-of-service problems. Don’t enter your Google password into a third-party downloader. YouTube says third-party apps must comply with its API Services Terms and takes action against apps that violate its terms. For offline viewing, use YouTube’s Download control; for your own uploads, use YouTube’s creator tools.

- Am I signed in to the Google account that owns Premium?
