NASA did consider bringing Starliner astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams home on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, but that was a contingency under review—not a rescue already underway. On August 24, 2024, NASA decided Boeing’s Starliner should return to Earth without its crew because the agency lacked enough confidence in its propulsion system for a crewed return. Starliner came back uncrewed in September; Wilmore and Williams returned aboard Crew-9 in March 2025.
What the August 2024 headline was about
Wilmore and Williams launched aboard Boeing’s Starliner on June 5, 2024, and docked with the International Space Station on June 6. The flight was a crewed test intended to last roughly eight to 14 days, according to NASA’s later summary. Instead, propulsion-system anomalies delayed the return while NASA and Boeing investigated.
In early August, NASA was weighing two broad options: return the astronauts on Starliner after more analysis and testing, or send Starliner home uncrewed and have the astronauts return on a later SpaceX Dragon flight. The headline described that unsettled debate. It did not describe a final NASA decision or a separate emergency launch.
The “Boeing not happy” characterization came from contemporary reporting attributed to The Wall Street Journal, not a public Boeing statement establishing a formal corporate confrontation. Futurism’s account of the report described Boeing officials as objecting to leaving Starliner behind and waiting for a later Dragon mission. The available public record supports that reported reaction; it does not establish that Boeing formally threatened NASA or refused permission to use Dragon.

Why NASA considered using SpaceX
During Starliner’s approach to the station, NASA identified multiple helium leaks in service-module manifolds and problems with several reaction-control-system thrusters. Helium pressurizes parts of the propulsion system and operates related valves. These were not cabin-air leaks, and their discovery did not mean the spacecraft was certain to fail. But the propulsion system is important during the maneuvers that lead from undocking through de-orbit and re-entry, so NASA needed to judge whether it could rely on the system under return conditions.
That judgment was about confidence and performance margin, not simply whether Starliner could move. NASA and Boeing conducted tests and reviewed data, but the agency still had to assess possible failure modes and the consequences of a problem during a crewed return. NASA’s updates document the initial leak and thruster reports, ground testing and investigation, and a June status update.
The tests were encouraging, but not conclusive
In a docked hot-fire test, Starliner fired 27 of its 28 reaction-control jets in short bursts. NASA said preliminary readings showed the tested thrusters had returned to preflight levels for thrust and chamber pressure. That was useful evidence, but it did not by itself settle how the spacecraft would perform across the full sequence of an actual return. NASA still had to evaluate the test results, helium behavior, and remaining uncertainty. NASA’s account of the July test describes both the results and the continuing assessment.

Dragon offered a practical alternative
Crew Dragon was already transporting NASA astronauts to and from the station. A workable plan was to reduce the upcoming Crew-9 launch from four astronauts to two, leaving room for Wilmore and Williams on the return flight. NASA’s August 21 status explanation described the options and mission logistics.
This was not a choice between companies in the abstract. NASA had to choose a return plan for this crew based on the available vehicles, evidence about Starliner’s performance, and the agency’s safety requirements.
Why the proposal mattered to Boeing
A crewed test flight is meant to demonstrate that a spacecraft can carry astronauts through the mission, including the return. If Starliner returned without its crew, NASA would gain data from an autonomous flight, but the test would not complete its intended crewed return. That carried technical, certification, reputational, and program consequences for Boeing.

NASA’s Commercial Crew Program was designed to give the agency more than one U.S. crew-transportation provider. Starliner was meant to operate alongside Crew Dragon, so an uncrewed return would underscore that Boeing’s vehicle was not yet ready for routine crewed service. The program’s original flight announcement describes the test’s role in NASA’s commercial crew effort.

Those stakes help explain why Boeing might have preferred further testing followed by a Starliner crew return. They do not prove that the company’s reported objection was based on a particular motive, or that it tried to override NASA’s safety decision. The distinction matters: reported dissatisfaction is not the same thing as a documented formal dispute.
NASA’s decision: Starliner returns without its crew
On August 24, 2024, NASA announced that Starliner would return to Earth uncrewed. NASA cited uncertainty about propulsion performance and the need to avoid unnecessary risk during a crewed return. The agency did not say Starliner was certain to fail; it determined that the available evidence did not provide sufficient confidence for the astronauts to fly home on it. Wilmore and Williams remained aboard the station as part of its crew and were assigned to return with Crew-9. The astronauts had a safe station environment and an eventual return plan; “stranded” is headline shorthand for being unable to return on their assigned spacecraft, not evidence that they were abandoned without supplies or an emergency-return option.

Starliner returned autonomously
Starliner departed the ISS and returned uncrewed in September 2024. That allowed NASA to avoid putting the crew aboard a spacecraft whose propulsion performance had not met the agency’s required level of certainty, while also gathering data during the return. The NASA Office of Inspector General report discusses the anomalies and the uncrewed return.
Wilmore and Williams returned on Crew-9
NASA reassigned the astronauts to SpaceX’s Crew-9, and they returned to Earth aboard its Dragon spacecraft in March 2025. NASA’s later Starliner FAQ summarizes the crew-return decision and mission status.

NASA’s 2026 summary says the Starliner test flight had been planned for eight to 14 days and extended to 93 days before the spacecraft’s uncrewed return. The astronauts’ station stay continued beyond that flight as they remained with the station crew until Crew-9 brought them home. Those dates describe a prolonged mission, not months spent in an announced emergency.
What the episode showed about NASA’s two-provider strategy
Having two crew vehicles mattered: Crew Dragon gave NASA another way to bring the astronauts home while Starliner was assessed. But redundancy does not mean both systems are equally mature or interchangeable in every situation. Crew-9 had to be adjusted, the crew’s assignment changed, and Starliner’s test and certification path was affected.
The case also shows why a spacecraft can complete major parts of a mission and still not be cleared for every part of it. Starliner launched, rendezvoused, docked, and returned autonomously, but NASA did not consider the evidence sufficient to approve its crewed return. For human spaceflight, that distinction between demonstrated capability and acceptable confidence is central.
What NASA’s 2026 investigation adds
In February 2026, NASA released an investigation report examining technical, organizational, and cultural contributors to the Starliner crewed test-flight problems. NASA said technical root-cause work was still continuing when it released the report. NASA’s report summary therefore adds an important qualification: the operational outcome is settled, but the full explanation of why the propulsion problems occurred and why they were not prevented earlier remains part of an ongoing technical and corrective-action process.
