Why Automation Anywhere Screenshots Appear Black—and How to Fix Them

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A black Automation Anywhere screenshot is usually not a broken image file. In unattended runs, Windows or RDP may not provide a visible desktop, auto-login may create a session state that Screen Capture cannot read, or Secure Recording may intentionally suppress screenshots. Fix the session and capture settings first; changing image formats or adding a display adapter does not address these documented causes.

What a black screenshot means

Automation Anywhere’s Screen Capture behavior depends on the Windows session in which the Bot Runner executes. The product documentation for Enterprise v11.3 (updated April 21, 2022) states: “When a bot is run in unattended mode (where auto-login is enabled), the bot using the Screen Capture command captures a black screenshot.” The same page states: “When Secure Recording Mode is enabled: Screen shots are disabled.” In either case, a black result can be expected behavior rather than a defective PNG, JPEG, or PDF.

Outside those documented restrictions, support examples point to a sleeping, locked, disconnected, or improperly logged-out Windows/RDP session. A second user login can also replace or interrupt the Bot Runner session. Behavior varies with Windows policy, VM or VDI provider, RDP topology, Automation Anywhere version, and whether the bot is attended or unattended.

Diagnose the failure in the right order

  1. Check Secure Recording. In the Control Room and bot configuration, determine whether Secure Recording mode is enabled. If it is, screenshot suppression is intentional. Disable it only when your organization’s data-protection policy allows visual capture; otherwise use logs, variables, application-level exports, or other non-screenshot diagnostics.
  2. Confirm the target window. The Screen package’s Capture area action must point to the intended active application or browser window. Re-select the target and use a stable window identifier rather than a title that changes with every page or document.
  3. Test the desktop itself. Immediately before the failing action, capture a clearly visible application or the desktop. If that image is black too, investigate the Windows session. If only one application is black, focus on window selection, rendering, permissions, or timing for that application.
  4. Inspect session state. Verify that the Bot Runner session is awake, visible, and not showing a lock screen. Check whether the VM slept, the RDP connection was disconnected, or another user logged in.
  5. Review unattended login and reuse. Inspect Control Room auto-login and session-reuse settings. Automation Anywhere recommends reusing an existing session when unattended runners may be locked or disconnected, including RDP-based deployments.
  6. Clean up stale RDP sessions. Sign out or log off the old session properly, then start a fresh run. An RDP session that was abandoned without a clean logoff is a recurring cause in community troubleshooting.
  7. Check deployment consistency. On multi-user devices, use a consistent screen resolution and an RDP session timeout appropriate for unattended work. Verify that the runner is connecting to the same Windows profile and display configuration on every run.

Fixes by execution scenario

Unattended run with auto-login

First determine whether the black image is the exact behavior documented for your Enterprise release. If auto-login is enabled and the bot is unattended, test with a deliberately visible session and compare the result. If screenshots are required, use a supported session-reuse arrangement and keep the runner’s desktop available under your organization’s security policy. If screenshots are not required, remove the capture action and collect structured diagnostics instead.

Locked, sleeping, or disconnected runner

Prevent the runner VM or workstation from sleeping during the bot window where policy permits. Review Windows lock and disconnect policies, the VM console state, and the RDP idle timeout. A disconnected RDP client is not necessarily the same as a logged-off Windows session; the bot still needs a usable desktop in the session it owns.

Another user logged in

Do not use the same Bot Runner account interactively while an unattended job is active. A second login can move the desktop, replace the session, or leave the bot attached to a non-visible session. Establish ownership of the runner account and document who may connect for support.

Only one application window is black

Rebuild the Capture area target and verify that the application is the foreground window at capture time. Add a wait for the window or for a distinctive control, and allow the page or application to finish rendering. If the application uses hardware-accelerated or protected content, compare a capture of another visible window; a desktop-wide failure points to the session, while a single-window failure points to the target or application.

Secure Recording is required

When privacy rules require Secure Recording, do not work around the control merely to obtain an image. Treat the absence of screenshots as an expected protection. Replace visual evidence with timestamps, application logs, extracted values, transaction IDs, or a redacted export that your policy permits.

Attended versus unattended operation

Condition What you may observe Best next action
Attended, visible desktop Capture generally works when the selected window is active. Validate the target window and timing.
Unattended with auto-login Screen Capture can return black by documented design. Review session reuse and whether screenshots are permissible or necessary.
Locked or sleeping session The bot may run without a capturable desktop. Correct power, lock, and disconnect behavior where policy allows.
Disconnected or stale RDP session The runner can remain attached to an unusable or abandoned desktop. Log off cleanly, reconnect consistently, and remove competing sessions.
Secure Recording enabled Screenshots are disabled. Keep the control enabled and use non-visual diagnostics, or obtain an approved exception.
Wrong Capture area target One application or browser capture is black or empty while other windows work. Select the correct active window and add a readiness wait.

RDP and Windows checks for administrators

  • Confirm the Bot Runner account has one authoritative session and that support staff are not logging into it concurrently.
  • Compare the resolution, scaling, and monitor arrangement between successful attended runs and unattended runs.
  • Review sleep, lock, disconnect, and session-timeout policies applied by Group Policy or the VDI platform.
  • Check whether the VM is being suspended or reprovisioned between jobs.
  • After changing a policy, perform a clean sign-out and new login; do not rely on a previously abandoned RDP connection.
  • Record the Automation Anywhere edition and version, Windows build, VM or VDI type, RDP mode, auto-login setting, and Secure Recording state in the incident ticket. These details determine which behavior is supported.

A controlled retest that isolates the cause

  1. Start with a clean Bot Runner session and no other interactive login.
  2. Open a known, ordinary window such as a text editor and leave it visibly on the desktop.
  3. Run Screen Capture against that window using the simplest settings.
  4. Repeat after the session is disconnected, then after it is intentionally locked, recording the result each time.
  5. Run the same bot attended and compare the files.
  6. Finally, enable the real browser or application target and add the required wait. This separates session failures from target-selection and rendering failures.

If the known window is black in every unattended test but works attended, concentrate on auto-login, session reuse, RDP state, and Secure Recording. If the known window works and only the browser fails, troubleshoot the browser target and page readiness instead of changing Windows display hardware.

Common errors and precise fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Every unattended capture is black; attended capture works. Auto-login session behavior, locked/disconnected desktop, or session replacement. Check Secure Recording, reuse the correct session, clean up stale RDP sessions, and test with a visible desktop.
Every capture is suppressed even though the desktop is visible. Secure Recording mode. Follow the organization’s privacy decision; do not bypass the control.
Desktop capture works, browser capture is black. Incorrect active-window target, page not ready, or application rendering issue. Re-select the browser window, wait for a selector or visible state, and compare another application.
Results change after a support engineer connects. Another login has altered or replaced the Bot Runner session. Stop concurrent interactive use and establish a single-session operating procedure.
Failure returns after the VM is idle overnight. Sleep, lock, disconnect, or VDI suspension policy. Align power and session policies with the unattended schedule, subject to security approval.
Changing PNG, JPEG, or resolution has no effect. The problem occurs before encoding, at the session or capture stage. Restore a capturable desktop and correct the target before changing output format.

Reliability, security, and operational trade-offs

Keeping an interactive desktop available improves screenshot reliability but may conflict with corporate locking and data-protection rules. Reusing a disconnected session reduces session churn, yet it must be controlled so that credentials and on-screen data are not exposed. Disabling Secure Recording may solve a capture requirement while violating policy. Decide first whether a screenshot is genuinely required, then choose the least-privileged session and retention approach that meets the business need.

Or skip the browser setup

If what you need is a screenshot of a public web page—not the private Bot Runner desktop—ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It does not repair a black Automation Anywhere desktop, but it can provide clean captures of public URLs without maintaining a browser session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a display dongle or generic screenshot utility fix this Automation Anywhere problem?

Not when the cause is Secure Recording, auto-login behavior, or an unavailable Windows/RDP session. Those conditions must be resolved or accepted as policy; an unrelated capture utility does not change the Bot Runner session.

Should I disable Windows locking for every unattended bot?

No. Keep the organization’s security policy as the constraint. Change lock, sleep, or disconnect behavior only for an approved runner design, and use non-screenshot diagnostics when visual capture is not permitted.

Is ScreenshotNeo a replacement for Screen Capture inside a Bot Runner?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures public web URLs through an API. It cannot capture a private Windows desktop or correct an Automation Anywhere session that is black.
