If a Word page looks shifted to the left, first check whether the page on screen is misplaced or whether the text on the page is off-center. A view or zoom setting affects only the workspace; margins, a gutter, paragraph indents, or section formatting affect the document. If the page looks right in Word but prints incorrectly, check the printer and paper settings.

Find out what is shifted

What you see Likely cause
The whole white page sits to the left in Word’s window View, zoom, navigation pane, comments, or review markup
Text sits too close to the paper’s left edge on every page Page margins, gutter, page size, or paragraph indents
The apparent left and right margins alternate on facing pages Mirror margins or another book-layout setting
Only some pages or one part of the document is shifted A section break with different page setup
The editing view looks wrong, but the PDF or printout does not A screen-layout issue
The PDF is centered, but paper output is off-center Printer scaling, paper-size mismatch, printable-area limits, or hardware

The steps below use current desktop Word on Windows or Mac; labels can vary somewhat by version. Before changing margins, check the result in File > Print. That helps distinguish a workspace problem from a document or printer problem.

If the page itself is left in the Word window

A page’s position within the application window does not change its margins or printed position. Try these display fixes first:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose View > Print Layout if you are in another view.
  2. Under View, choose Vertical if Side to Side is active. Side to Side presents pages like a book; switching back to Vertical restores normal vertical page movement and zoom controls. See Microsoft’s instructions for side-by-side page viewing.
  3. Use the zoom control on the status bar to choose One Page, Page Width, or 100%.
  4. Temporarily close the Navigation Pane with View > Navigation Pane.
  5. If comments or tracked changes are visible, go to Review > Display for Review > No Markup and hide comments temporarily. If the page recenters, the review area was affecting the workspace, not the page margins.
  6. If necessary, switch to another view and back to Print Layout, then restart Word. These are display resets, not guaranteed repairs.

If text is shifted inside the page

Check margins, mirror margins, and gutter

In desktop Word, open Layout > Margins > Custom Margins. Word’s default margins are one inch, but that is only a starting point, not a requirement; confirm the values suit your document and paper size. Microsoft’s margin instructions cover the basic controls.

In the Custom Margins dialog, check Multiple pages, Left, Right, Gutter, and Gutter position:

  • If this is an ordinary report and you want fixed, matching margins, set Multiple pages to Normal, set the left and right margins to the values you want, and set Gutter to 0 if no binding space is needed.
  • Choose Apply to carefully. Select Whole document only if the same settings should apply throughout; otherwise, use This section or another appropriate scope.
  • If the document is meant to be bound, do not automatically remove mirror margins or the gutter. They reserve space for the binding.

Mirror margins define margins as Inside and Outside instead of fixed Left and Right margins. The inside margin faces the binding; the outside margin is on the outer edge. As a result, the binding space appears on opposite sides of facing pages. That is often correct for books, magazines, bound reports, and other double-sided layouts, not a formatting error. See Microsoft’s explanation of mirror margins.

  • Compact design saves desktop space and allows for close, comfortable mouse position.
  • Optimized key spacing and key travel for fast, fluid typing.
  • Sleek, low-profile design complements any workspace.
  • Expressive input key[2] for quick access to emojis, symbols, and more.
  • Connect up to 3 devices and switch seamlessly between them[1].

A gutter adds extra space for binding or punching. If it is not needed, it can make the text block appear displaced; if it is needed, confirm its position and the mirror-margin setting. Check File > Print before changing a book layout based only on how a two-page editing view looks. The editor’s spread is not conclusive proof of how pages will fall in the physical printed arrangement.

Word for the web can preserve mirror margins already in a document, but Microsoft says to open the file in desktop Word to create them. If you cannot find the relevant controls in the web version, that may be an edition limitation rather than a document fault.

Check for section-specific page setup

Word can apply different margins, orientation, paper size, and other page settings to different sections. If only some pages are shifted, a section break is a strong clue.

  1. Choose Home > Show/Hide ¶ to reveal formatting marks.
  2. Look for labels such as Section Break (Next Page), Section Break (Odd Page), Section Break (Even Page), or Section Break (Continuous).
  3. Click in the affected section and open Layout > Margins > Custom Margins. Compare its settings with a section that looks correct.
  4. Set Apply to to the intended scope, such as This section, This point forward, or Whole document, then repeat for any other sections that differ.

Avoid deleting section breaks just to make the pages match. A break can also control headers, footers, page numbering, or orientation; removing it may change more than margins.

Check paragraph indents and other objects

If the paper is centered but the text is not, paragraph formatting may be the cause. A page margin sets the text area relative to the paper edge. A paragraph indent moves a paragraph within that text area.

  1. Select the relevant text—or press Ctrl+A on Windows or Command+A on Mac to select all text—then open the Paragraph dialog.
  2. Check Alignment, Indentation: Left, Indentation: Right, and Special. Set unintended left or right indents to 0, and set Special to None unless a first-line or hanging indent is intentional.
  3. Inspect the ruler’s indent markers. If an unwanted indent returns, check the paragraph’s style as well as direct formatting.

If only particular content is displaced, check what kind of content it is: tables have cell margins, text boxes have their own page position, and headers and footers have positions independent of the body text. Those settings can shift content without changing the page’s margins.

Check paper size, orientation, and print settings

A document set up for one paper size can look or print differently when Word or the printer uses another. Check Layout > Size for the intended paper (for example, Letter or A4), Layout > Orientation for Portrait or Landscape, and Layout > Margins for suitable margins. Confirm the paper size in the print dialog matches Word’s setting. Turn off driver options such as Fit to page, Scale to fit, or Borderless expansion unless you deliberately need them.

If Word warns that margins are outside the printable area, the printer may not be able to print that close to the physical edge of the sheet. This is not necessarily a Word rendering defect. Check the selected printer, its paper size, and its driver options, or adjust the margins to stay within the printer’s printable region. Microsoft explains the printable-area warning.

For books and booklets, verify the spread before changing it

In a conventional book layout, page 1 is normally on the right-hand side of a physical spread. Mirror margins keep the binding-side margin consistent as pages face one another, and an Odd Page section break can make a major section begin on a right-hand page. Word’s two-page editing view may not make that physical relationship obvious, particularly when numbering restarts or section starts differ. Use File > Print to inspect the intended output before changing settings; Microsoft Q&A also recommends checking Print Preview for odd/even placement questions (two-page layout discussion, gutter discussion).

Verify the result in the right place

  1. Word editing view: useful for checking whether the page is merely positioned oddly on screen.
  2. File > Print: checks Word’s print preview and the selected paper and printer.
  3. Exported PDF: helps confirm whether the document layout itself is correct independently of a physical printer.
  4. Test print: use this to confirm actual paper alignment if the PDF is correct but printed output is not.

If Print Preview and the PDF are correct, avoid changing document margins to compensate for a display issue. If the PDF is correct but paper is not, focus on printer scaling, printable area, paper size, and the driver. If only one section differs, revisit that section’s page setup.
