Multiple “Malwarebytes Native Message Service” entries are not automatically malware. They are usually associated with Malwarebytes Browser Guard’s native-messaging connection to your browser. Several copies can appear when you use multiple browsers, profiles, windows, or extension sessions. However, the display name alone cannot prove that a process is genuine.
Check the executable’s location and digital signature first. If the file is in an expected Malwarebytes directory, is signed by Malwarebytes, uses little CPU and memory, and disappears after all browsers close, it is usually reasonable to leave it alone.
What is Malwarebytes Native Message Service?
Browser extensions normally run inside Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or another browser’s extension environment. A native-messaging host is a companion desktop process that allows an extension to communicate with software installed on Windows.
Malwarebytes Browser Guard is a Malwarebytes browser extension that provides features such as malicious-site, phishing, tracker, and ad blocking. Malwarebytes lists installation options for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari on its official Browser Guard page.

“Native Message Service” is a Task Manager display name, not necessarily the Windows service name shown in the Services console. The exact executable filename can vary, so do not assume that every process with a similar name is authentic.
Why are several copies running?
Multiple entries can have legitimate explanations:
- Several browser processes or browser profiles are active.
- More than one supported browser has Browser Guard installed.
- Separate browser windows or extension contexts created separate native-messaging sessions.
- A browser or extension restarted and temporarily left an older process visible.
- Browser recovery, an update, or a crash affected process cleanup.
- A software-management defect or resource leak is causing processes to persist.
- Malware is imitating the display name.
A stable group of short-lived processes using little CPU and memory is less concerning than a process count that continually grows. Processes that remain after every browser has closed, consume substantial resources, cause crashes, or run from an unexpected directory deserve further investigation.
A July 2022 TenForums report documented recurring entries and low memory use, but it did not establish a confirmed cause, provide a verified executable path, or document a final fix. It should not be treated as proof of a current, universal Browser Guard bug.

Is Browser Guard causing the processes?
Browser Guard is the leading suspect because it is the Malwarebytes component that integrates directly with supported browsers. But the available report records the user’s suspicion rather than a confirmed Malwarebytes diagnosis.

The safest way to test the connection is reversible:
- Open the extensions or add-ons page in each browser where Browser Guard is installed.
- Disable Malwarebytes Browser Guard temporarily.
- Close the browser completely, including other open browsers.
- Open Task Manager again and check whether the entries disappear and stay absent.
If the processes stop appearing until Browser Guard is enabled again, that establishes a strong correlation, not necessarily a confirmed software defect. If they continue with all browsers closed and Browser Guard disabled, examine the executable and the installed Malwarebytes components instead.
How to verify that the processes are legitimate
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details rather than relying only on the Processes view.
- Right-click the suspected entry and choose Open file location.
- Right-click the executable, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures.
- Confirm that the signer is Malwarebytes or its recognized corporate publisher.
- Check that the file is in an expected Malwarebytes installation directory or a known Browser Guard native-host location.
A valid signature and expected location are stronger evidence than the display name. Be cautious if the file is unsigned, stored in a temporary or random folder, located in a user-download directory, or present despite having no Malwarebytes installation. Preserve the path and metadata before deleting or uploading anything if support may need to investigate.
Run a Malwarebytes or Windows security scan when the location or signature is suspicious, especially if you also see browser redirects, unexplained pop-ups, high network activity, or other signs of compromise.

Safe troubleshooting sequence
1. Close browsers completely
Save your work and use each browser’s normal exit command. Wait briefly, reopen Task Manager, and check whether the native-messaging processes have gone. A process that disappears when browsers close may simply be serving an active extension session.
2. Temporarily disable Browser Guard
Disable Browser Guard in every installed browser, close those browsers, and check Task Manager again. Test one browser at a time if you use multiple browsers or profiles so that the result is easier to interpret.
3. Update Malwarebytes and your browser
Use Malwarebytes’ own update control, update the affected browser through its normal settings, restart Windows, and repeat the test. Avoid relying on old version-specific advice because product behavior and labels can change.

If disabling and re-enabling Browser Guard reliably reproduces the problem, remove Browser Guard from the affected browser. Restart the browser and Windows, then reinstall it from Malwarebytes’ official page or the browser’s official extension store. Do not use similarly named extensions from unofficial download sites.

5. Contact Malwarebytes Support for persistent problems
Use the official Malwarebytes Support site or Malwarebytes community forum when processes remain after browsers close, repeatedly multiply, cause high resource use or crashes, or appear to belong to a damaged installation. Generate Support Tool logs when requested and provide the executable path, signature information, Malwarebytes and browser versions, and what happened when Browser Guard was disabled.

You can end an individual process from Task Manager, but this is usually temporary. It may interrupt communication between Browser Guard and the browser, and the browser or extension may immediately start the process again.
Repeatedly terminating every copy is not a durable fix. If resource use is low and the entries disappear when browsers close, recording the behavior and leaving them alone is generally preferable. If resource use is high or Windows is unstable, capture the process path and resource data first, then troubleshoot.

Not as the first response. Verify the path and signature, test Browser Guard, update both products, and reinstall only the affected extension if the evidence points there. Use the Malwarebytes Support Tool for persistent installation problems.

Consider uninstalling Malwarebytes only when official support or a documented repair procedure recommends it, or when you have confirmed that the installation is damaged and have a replacement security plan. Do not manually delete files from Malwarebytes directories.
When could it be malware?
The process is probably legitimate when:
- Malwarebytes Browser Guard is installed.
- The executable is in an expected Malwarebytes-related location.
- The file has a valid Malwarebytes digital signature.
- The processes correlate with browser activity and use modest resources.
It is potentially suspicious when the file has no valid signature, runs from an unexpected directory, appears without any Malwarebytes installation, or is accompanied by redirects, pop-ups, unusual network activity, crashes, or other compromise indicators.
Multiple copies alone do not prove either safety or infection. The original report concerns a Windows 10 experience from July 2022; current behavior may differ by Windows edition, browser, Browser Guard release, and Malwarebytes version. Verify the evidence on your own system before taking action.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the processes return after I end them?
The browser or Browser Guard may still need a native-messaging connection, so it can start the process again. Reappearance alone is not evidence of malware.
Does disabling Browser Guard disable Malwarebytes antivirus protection?
It disables Browser Guard’s browser-extension features. It does not by itself prove that Malwarebytes for Windows has been uninstalled, but review your Malwarebytes settings and protection status before relying on it.
Does this apply to Windows 11?
The documented report involved Windows 10. The same native-messaging concept can apply on other supported Windows configurations, but the old report does not prove identical behavior on Windows 11.
