Why does ABCpdf produce different PDFs from the same HTML after an upgrade? The most likely explanation is a changed HTML rendering engine or rendering configuration. ABCpdf supports multiple engines, and ABCpdf 14 identifies ABCChrome146 as its new default. Engine behavior, CSS media mode, fonts, assets and compatibility settings can all change pagination, text wrapping and visual layout even when your HTML source is identical.
No single cause can be confirmed without the two ABCpdf versions, namespaces, settings, inputs and before/after PDFs. The reliable approach is to freeze every variable, identify what changed, and then choose either a compatibility configuration or a deliberate template migration.
What an ABCpdf upgrade can change
The default HTML engine
ABCpdf 14’s upgrade documentation identifies ABCChrome146 as the new default HTML conversion engine. An earlier deployment may have used ABCChrome123 or another engine. A default change can happen even if your application code never sets an engine explicitly.

The ABCpdf namespace and compatibility behavior
The ABCpdf 14 migration guidance warns of minor behavior differences between the ABCpdf 13 and ABCpdf 14 namespaces and documents a compatibility setting for legacy output styles. Record the namespace used by the application and review the migration guide for the exact compatibility option available in your installed version. Do not assume a setting from one major release exists unchanged in another.
Engine-specific rendering
ABCpdf documents Chromium, MSHTML and ABCGecko rendering engines, as well as versioned Chrome engines and other alternatives. WebSupergoo states: “However due to the differences in behavior and capabilities of the underlying rendering engine, you should expect some differences in behavior and output when switching between them.” Different engines can represent fonts, calculate layout and paginate content differently.
First diagnostic: prove what changed
Before editing a template, create a configuration record for the old and new deployments. Use the same captured input wherever possible.

Check the selected engine explicitly
Inspect Doc.HtmlOptions.Engine in both environments rather than inferring the engine from the ABCpdf version. The Engine property documentation lists Chrome146, Chrome123, Chrome117, Chrome86, Chrome65, Gecko, WebKit and MSHTML. Availability depends on the package and installer; some alternatives require the MSI installer or subsidiary NuGet packages.

Check Print versus Screen CSS
ABCpdf’s Media property selects Print or Screen stylesheets and defaults to Print. A page with @media print rules can therefore differ from a browser screenshot or from a deployment configured for Screen.

- Capture the exact HTML. Save the final HTML string sent to ABCpdf, not only the template source.
- Bundle dependencies. Preserve CSS, images, web fonts and JavaScript at the same versions. Record whether each asset loaded locally or over HTTP.
- Preserve runtime context. Use identical URL, authentication, cookies, custom headers, user agent, timezone and geolocation where relevant.
- Stabilize dynamic content. Freeze dates, random values, API responses and data ordering. Wait for the same selector or application-ready signal.
- Compare in a clean environment. Run both versions with the same operating-system fonts, locale, architecture and installed ABCpdf engine packages.
The vendor documentation establishes that engines and media can differ; this controlled-input procedure is a practical way to isolate those documented variables from unrelated input drift.
Compare the PDFs by symptom
Pagination or page count changed
- Check engine selection and media first.
- Compare page size, margins, viewport and CSS
@pagerules. - Look for font substitution: a wider fallback font can push lines and blocks onto later pages.
- Inspect explicit and automatic page-break behavior around tables, flex and grid layouts.
Text wraps differently
- Verify that the intended web fonts are installed or successfully loaded in both runs.
- Compare engine versions and font rendering settings.
- Check fractional widths, zoom or device scale values and any changed user agent.
Images or backgrounds are missing
- Test every asset URL from the conversion environment, including authentication requirements.
- Check relative URL resolution and local-file permissions.
- Confirm that the newer engine supports the image format or CSS feature used.
Colors or visibility changed
- Check Print versus Screen media.
- Inspect print-color and background-printing options.
- Look for CSS selectors whose specificity changed under the new engine.
Choose a migration strategy
Hold the old behavior temporarily
If the old engine is still supported and installed, select it explicitly and pin the media mode and other relevant options. Use the documented compatibility setting for legacy output styles when the installed version provides it. This is a stabilization measure, not a guarantee that the old engine will remain available indefinitely.
Adopt the new engine deliberately
Run a representative corpus through the new engine, classify every difference, and update templates for standards-compliant behavior where appropriate. Avoid compensating with arbitrary pixel offsets until you understand whether the difference comes from fonts, media, page geometry or unsupported CSS.

Keep a rendering contract
For production, define the engine, media, package version, fonts, page dimensions, wait condition and asset versions as deployment configuration. Store reference PDFs or rendered-page images for representative documents and review intentional changes during upgrades.
Reliability and performance considerations
ABCpdf 14’s documentation describes ABCChrome146 as faster and more secure than the previous engine, but performance and fidelity depend on the document and environment. More important than a generic speed claim is repeatability: use fixed inputs, explicit settings and a warm-up or readiness check for pages that execute JavaScript. A conversion that finishes before fonts or asynchronous content load can produce a different PDF while using the same engine.
When comparing versions, record elapsed time, failures and output characteristics separately. Do not treat a faster conversion as evidence that the output is correct, or a slower one as proof of a regression.
Troubleshooting checklist
The Engine property is unavailable or an engine cannot be selected
Cause: the selected engine is not included in the installed package. Verify the MSI installer or subsidiary NuGet package requirements and choose an engine actually present in the deployment.
Changing the engine fixes layout but breaks fonts
Cause: engines can represent and substitute fonts differently. Install the same fonts in both environments, verify web-font loading, then decide whether to pin the engine or revise the template.

The PDF differs only in production
Cause: production may have different fonts, network access, credentials, locale or engine packages. Export the configuration and loaded-asset list from both environments and reproduce with a captured, self-contained input.
Only print output changed
Cause: Media changed or print CSS is being applied differently. Log the property, inspect @media print rules and compare page geometry.
Results vary between repeated runs
Cause: asynchronous content, changing data, resource timing or missing readiness waits. Freeze data and use a deterministic wait condition before comparing engine behavior.
A compatibility option has no effect
Cause: compatibility settings are version-specific and may affect only particular legacy behaviors. Confirm the option name and scope in the migration guide for the exact ABCpdf version and namespace installed.

Does installing ABCpdf 14 always change the rendering engine?
No. ABCpdf 14 makes ABCChrome146 the documented new default, but an application may explicitly select another installed engine. Log the actual Engine value in both deployments.

Should I rewrite my HTML immediately?
No. First reproduce the difference with identical HTML, assets, fonts, media and settings. Rewrite only after identifying an intentional engine or standards-behavior change.
Can a PDF viewer cause the difference?
A viewer can display or substitute content differently, but first compare the PDF files themselves and their metadata. If the files differ, investigate ABCpdf inputs and rendering settings.
