WHOOP MG feels more like a refined WHOOP than a completely new kind of wearable. Its most immediately practical upgrades are a claimed 14-plus-day battery and quicker access to app data; its ECG and blood-pressure features are the main reasons to choose it over WHOOP 5.0. But MG is bundled with the $359-per-year U.S. WHOOP Life membership, so its premium makes sense chiefly if you specifically want those cardiovascular features as well as WHOOP’s screen-free recovery tracking.
What WHOOP MG is—and what it isn’t
WHOOP MG is the medical-feature version of WHOOP’s fifth-generation wearable. It is a small, screen-free sensor worn in a fabric band, designed for continuous use and paired with the WHOOP app. There is no watch face, on-device workout display, GPS map, music control, or notification screen. You get sleep, strain, recovery, heart-rate and HRV data, and coaching through the app, rather than by glancing at your wrist.
The MG hardware adds conductive contacts in its clasp for on-demand ECG readings. WHOOP Life membership also unlocks irregular-heart-rhythm notifications and blood-pressure insights. Those additions—not a radically different daily tracking experience—are the point of MG. WHOOP’s launch announcement describes the fifth-generation devices as smaller and longer-lasting; current U.S. plan details are on the membership comparison page.
“Medical-grade” should not be read as a blanket claim about every number WHOOP produces. The regulated ECG and heart-rhythm functions are distinct from wellness estimates such as blood pressure, and from proprietary recovery, sleep, and Healthspan scores. A useful score or a quicker app is not, by itself, proof of clinical accuracy.

First impressions: familiar routine, smaller hardware
Early review coverage describes MG as about 7% smaller than WHOOP 4.0, with a redesigned clasp. That is a modest physical refinement, not a change to the basic wearing experience: the sensor stays against the body in a band, and the app remains the place to see your results. Whether a screen-free device feels freeing or inconvenient depends on what you expect from a wrist wearable. It avoids constant visual prompts, but you cannot check a workout metric or notification directly on the device.
Fit matters because WHOOP is intended to collect data across the day and night. A band that is comfortable during training but creates a pressure point in bed can undermine the habit of wearing it continuously. WHOOP supports different wearing options, including wrist and biceps wear and compatible WHOOP Body garments; check the current accessory guidance for the exact item and fit. One practical catch for existing members: the early review reports that MG’s new clasp makes WHOOP 4.0 straps incompatible. Budget for MG-compatible accessories rather than assuming an existing band collection will carry over.
The available first-impressions reporting is based on an early, short evaluation, not months of wear. It can speak to initial feel and app use, but it cannot settle long-term comfort, durability, or sensor accuracy.

WHOOP lists MG battery life at 14-plus days and includes a Wireless PowerPack with the U.S. Life membership. That is a substantial convenience if you dislike frequent charging, travel for a week, or want fewer interruptions to overnight tracking. The pack can charge the sensor while it is being worn, which reduces the usual trade-off between charging and collecting data.

“14-plus days” is a manufacturer claim, not a promise that every person will get the same interval. Usage and conditions can affect battery life, and a bundled charging pack is still another accessory to carry. Even with those caveats, early review coverage found the longer battery life one of MG’s clearest benefits. It may be more noticeable day to day than features many owners will only open occasionally.
Does MG get your data faster?
Early coverage describes faster processing than on WHOOP 4.0, with sleep, recovery, and related morning information appearing within minutes of waking in the reviewer’s use. That is a practical improvement if you check your recovery before deciding how hard to train.
Keep three things separate: the sensor collecting measurements, the device syncing them to the app, and the app processing a sleep session into results. A faster-feeling morning update does not establish that a sensor is more accurate. The early reviewer also described sleep and HRV tracking as feeling improved, but that is an impression, not an independent comparison against a clinical reference.

Trying the ECG and heart-rhythm features
The ECG is MG’s most distinctive feature relative to WHOOP 5.0. In the reviewed workflow, you open Heart Screener/ECG in the app, place the required fingers on the conductive clasp contacts, stay still for the recording, then review the result in the app. The early review describes a 30-second recording and a report roughly a minute later; treat those timings as that reviewer’s experience, not a guaranteed service level.

WHOOP says its ECG is intended to screen for potential signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib), not to diagnose every heart condition. ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm features require MG and Life, and availability can vary by region. WHOOP’s Life information lists important restrictions: the ECG is not intended for people under 22, people with known arrhythmias other than AFib, or people with pacemakers, ICDs, or other implanted electronic devices. Check current local availability and eligibility before buying.
Early review coverage also flags an important limitation for endurance athletes: AFib detection may not work when resting heart rate is below 50 beats per minute. If that applies to you, do not assume the screening feature will suit your physiology; check WHOOP’s current guidance and discuss appropriate monitoring with a clinician.
If a reading fails, movement or poor contact can be reasons to retry while still and following the app’s instructions. A failed reading is not itself evidence of a heart problem. Conversely, a normal wearable reading does not rule out a serious problem. If you have concerning symptoms, seek medical care rather than waiting for or relying on a wearable result.

WHOOP Life includes blood-pressure insights, but WHOOP describes this feature for wellness—not as a clinical diagnosis or substitute for a validated blood-pressure monitor. In the early reviewed workflow, setup involved three readings with a blood-pressure cuff to calibrate the feature, followed by daily estimates based on physiological signals. Calibration steps and availability may change, so consult the current WHOOP membership and support information and in-app instructions.
Rank #4
Think of estimates as potential trend context, not definitive individual readings. Use the required cuff carefully and consistently for calibration; confirm concerning results with a validated cuff or healthcare professional. Do not use WHOOP estimates to change medication or manage hypertension on your own. Inconsistent posture, poor cuff fit or placement, movement, and inadequate calibration can all make readings difficult to interpret.
Recovery, Healthspan, and cycle insights
Most of the familiar WHOOP experience—sleep, strain, recovery, HRV, resting heart rate, and coaching—is not unique to MG. Early review coverage found faster access to morning data, perceived improvements in sleep and HRV tracking, and useful AI-driven Daily Outlook coaching. Those observations may help explain the appeal, but they do not prove the metrics are more accurate or that MG will produce better training decisions for every user.
Healthspan features such as WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging are offered on Peak and Life, rather than being exclusive to MG. They use longer-term patterns to frame health-related behavior and recovery. The early review said Healthspan became available after 21 days of data; that onboarding threshold can change with software updates. Treat these as motivational or contextual metrics, not clinical measurements, and avoid overreacting to a single composite score.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Women’s Hormonal Insights are also not an MG-only reason to upgrade: WHOOP lists them across its main membership plans. Early review coverage describes insights connecting menstrual-cycle phases with sleep, recovery, HRV, resting heart rate, and strain. Cycle information may need to be logged, and the usefulness of retrospective correlations or predictive guidance will vary with the person and the information available. Individual cycles differ; a generalized recommendation should not overrule how you feel or medical advice.

Current U.S. prices and feature eligibility are listed on WHOOP’s plan comparison and pricing support page; terms can vary by location and membership status. The battery comparison for 4.0 comes from early review coverage, while 14-plus days is WHOOP’s current claim for 5.0 and MG.
For an existing 4.0 member, upgrading is optional: WHOOP support says non-upgraded members can continue using 4.0. Eligible members may see a $79 MG upgrade fee or a hardware route tied to a qualifying membership extension; the exact path depends on the account. Check WHOOP’s upgrade terms before calculating the cost. MG is bundled with a renewing annual membership, not sold here as a conventional one-time tracker purchase.
Is WHOOP MG worth $359 a year?
As of August 2026, WHOOP lists Life at $359 per year in the United States, including MG hardware, a SuperKnit Luxe band, and Wireless PowerPack. Annual membership auto-renews unless cancelled, according to WHOOP support. Over three years at the listed annual rate, that is $1,077 before any applicable changes, taxes, or offer-specific terms. Compare the ongoing membership cost—not just the device included in year one.

- Choose MG/Life if you want WHOOP’s recovery-focused, screen-free routine and specifically value on-demand ECG or heart-rhythm screening, plus blood-pressure insights, at the Life price.
- Consider Peak instead if you want the core WHOOP approach, Healthspan, and related advanced features but do not need ECG or blood-pressure functions; WHOOP lists Peak at $239 per year in the U.S.
- Consider One or another tracker if your main goals are sleep, activity, and basic recovery data. WHOOP One is listed at $199 per year in the U.S.; a watch from another category may be a better fit if you want GPS, maps, notifications, or an on-device workout display.
- Keep your 4.0 if it meets your needs and you do not want to pay for MG’s added features. Check upgrade eligibility and accessory costs before deciding.
Apple Watch and Garmin devices are more directly aimed at on-device smartwatch or sports-watch functions; a chest strap paired with a sports watch may better suit someone prioritizing workout heart-rate measurement and sport features. These are category distinctions, not claims from a direct comparison test.
WHOOP currently promotes a one-month trial using a certified pre-owned WHOOP 5.0, not MG, so it can help you decide whether you like WHOOP’s screen-free approach but may not let you try the MG-only ECG workflow. A family membership may reduce the per-person cost for eligible households, but WHOOP says members use the same plan tier; verify current terms before relying on a discount.
Verdict
WHOOP MG’s first impression is a more convenient, quicker-feeling version of a familiar screen-free tracker, with cardiovascular features that make it meaningfully different from WHOOP 5.0. The battery is the benefit most likely to improve everyday use; ECG and blood-pressure insights are the features most likely to justify the extra cost. If your priority is ordinary sleep, strain, and recovery tracking, MG is difficult to justify at $359 annually. If you specifically want its heart-monitoring tools, understand their limits, and are comfortable with the subscription and accessory change, it is the most capable WHOOP option—not automatically the best value for everyone.
