The quickest reliable way to identify a PS5 is to find its CFI model number on the label underneath the console. The model group tells you the hardware family: CFI-1000 is the original PS5 family, CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 is PS5 Slim, and CFI-7000 is PS5 Pro. Then check the console separately for a built-in or detachable disc drive.

Do not use storage capacity, color, a swapped cover, or the final A/B suffix as your only identification method.
How to find the CFI model number
- Shut down the console and disconnect cables if you need more room to handle it.
- Stand the PS5 vertically.
- Remove the base if it blocks the underside label.
- Find the identifier beginning with
CFI, such asCFI-1015A,CFI-1215B,CFI-2015AorCFI-7015B. - Write down the complete number before buying a cover, stand or replacement part.
Sony identifies the physical underside label as the location for the model number. The on-console path Settings > System > System Software > Console Information is useful for viewing the serial number and other system information, but Sony’s instructions do not guarantee that this screen displays the full CFI model number on every software version. Model number versus serial number
The model number is the CFI-formatted hardware identifier shared by a model group. The serial number is a longer, unique identifier for your individual console. Support, warranty and resale processes may request both, but the serial number alone does not tell an ordinary buyer whether the console is Slim or Pro.

Original PS5 or PS5 Slim?
Use the CFI group first:
CFI-10xxandCFI-11xxare original PS5-family variants.CFI-12xxis a later revision of the original-style CFI-1000 family; do not automatically call it Slim.CFI-20xxandCFI-21xxare PS5 Slim models.
Physical clues can confirm the result. Slim consoles are smaller and use four removable cover sections, often described by Sony as the cross, square, triangle and circle covers. On a disc-equipped Slim, the drive forms a distinct lower section. The original chassis has a simpler two-panel appearance. Sony separates cover procedures for the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000/7000 groups in its cover-replacement instructions.
USB ports as a secondary clue
According to Sony’s USB guide, CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 consoles have two front USB-C ports, while CFI-1000 consoles have one front USB-A port and one front USB-C port. All four models have two rear USB-A ports. Use this only as confirmation; the CFI label is more reliable.

Regular PS5 or PS5 Pro?
A CFI-7000 model group identifies the PS5 Pro. Pro branding on the packaging or console can support that conclusion, but appearance, a third-party shell or a game bundle cannot prove it. The standard PS5 Pro package is all-digital and is currently listed by Sony in the US with 2 TB of storage. It can accept Sony’s optional disc drive.

Disc Edition or Digital Edition?
Look for an optical drive:
- Disc Edition: a visible disc slot and eject button are built into the console.
- Digital Edition: no built-in disc slot.
- Slim Digital or PS5 Pro with an optional drive: a separate detachable drive may be attached later, making the console appear similar to a factory disc model.
The detachable Sony drive is model CFI-ZDD1. Sony lists it for the CFI-2000/2100 Slim and CFI-7000 Pro groups, not the original CFI-1000 family. Internet access is required to pair the drive with a compatible console during setup. Details are in Sony’s disc-drive setup guide and CFI-ZDD1 manual.
What do the letters and numbers mean?
The number group is the safest high-level clue. The complete suffix can include regional and revision information, so record the entire CFI code for accessory or support work. Do not apply a universal rule that “A means Disc” and “B means Digital”: suffix conventions can vary by region and model revision. Confirm the disc configuration by looking for a slot and checking the product documentation for your exact region.

Can storage capacity identify the PS5?
No. Storage is only a supporting clue. Current US listings include 825 GB Digital Edition consoles, 1 TB Slim consoles and 2 TB PS5 Pro consoles, while older original models commonly have 825 GB. Usable free space is lower because system software reserves part of the drive, and storage listings can overlap across revisions. Check the CFI label instead.

Do not rely on these clues alone
- Storage: capacities overlap and usable space changes after updates.
- Serial number: identifies the individual unit, not its family at a glance.
- A/B suffix: not a universal disc-versus-digital code across regions.
- Color, shell or stand: accessories can be replaced and are not proof of the chassis.
- Box: useful, but verify the console label for used, refurbished or swapped units.
- Disc-free appearance: could mean a Digital Edition or a Pro; a Slim may also have a drive installed later.
Accessory compatibility matters
Match the full model group before ordering parts. The detachable disc drive works with CFI-2000/2100 Slim and CFI-7000 Pro consoles, not CFI-1000. Covers and bases also differ between Sony’s model groups; a cover designed for the original chassis is not automatically suitable for a Slim or Pro. Never remove covers just to identify a console when the underside label is readable.

If the label is unreadable
- Photograph the underside label and enlarge the image.
- Check the original box, receipt or listing for a CFI code.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and record the serial number.
- Use chassis shape, disc configuration, USB layout and storage only as supporting evidence.
- Contact PlayStation Support with the serial number and photos if the model remains uncertain.
Your final identification checklist
Record these four facts:
- CFI model group: 1000, 2000/2100 or 7000
- Built-in disc slot: yes or no
- Detachable drive attached: yes or no
- Storage listed: 825 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB or another capacity
For example, CFI-2015A with no built-in slot is a PS5 Slim Digital Edition; if a separate drive is attached, record it as a Slim with the detachable drive. CFI-7015B is a PS5 Pro, regardless of whether its optional drive is installed.
