Debian lists 1 GB of RAM as the minimum and 2 GB as recommended for a desktop installation. Those are general installation requirements, not a promise of smooth performance in demanding applications or a benchmark of this laptop. With 4 GB, Xfce is a reasonable choice to limit desktop overhead, but the experience will also depend on what you run and the condition of the machine.
Confirm the model and processor before relying on X220-specific advice
The phrase “ThinkPad X220 i5-3320M” needs checking. Lenovo’s archived X220 product book lists other processor configurations and does not substantiate that exact combination. This does not establish whether the model name or CPU in the question is mistaken.

Check the model and processor in BIOS/UEFI setup or in the installed system’s hardware information. Confirm them before following model-specific instructions or buying replacement parts; the available information does not establish compatible parts for the stated combination.
What to check on the laptop
A community page documenting an X220 reports standard-kernel boot, Intel graphics, audio, CPU frequency scaling, suspend and hibernation working on its particular configuration. It is an older, configuration-specific report—not a guarantee for every X220 or for Debian 13. Its example uses an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 wireless card; the page marks Wi-Fi as requiring non-free firmware and notes a touchpad issue on a machine reporting Synaptics firmware 8.1, while saying firmware 8.0 was apparently fine. Your wireless card and touchpad firmware are not known from the model and CPU description. Use a live session or check immediately after installation to verify Wi-Fi, suspend, touchpad behavior and external display output. If wireless does not work, check Debian’s current firmware instructions. The available information does not identify the exact firmware package or fix for this laptop.

How to choose if you are considering other distributions
- Memory use: Prefer a lighter desktop such as Xfce over a heavier environment on a 4 GB system; this is a practical selection criterion, not a claim about measured performance.
- Workflow: Debian with Xfce is the evidence-backed default here. Installation and support experience may lead you to another distribution, but there is not enough current comparative evidence to rank alternatives.
- Hardware behavior: Test the functions you rely on—especially wireless and suspend—on your actual machine rather than assuming that another X220’s results apply.
- Hardware identity: Resolve the X220/i5-3320M discrepancy before acting on model-specific advice.
