The screenshot key depends on your operating system. On Windows, use Print Screen (PrtSc) or Windows + Shift + S for a selected area. On a Mac, press Shift + Command + 3 or Shift + Command + 4. On a Chromebook, press its dedicated Screenshot key, or use Ctrl + Shift + Show windows. Linux shortcuts vary by desktop; GNOME uses Shift + Prnt Scrn for an area.

Operating-system updates, keyboard layouts, accessibility settings and remapping tools can change the result. If a shortcut does nothing, identify the platform and keyboard layout before assuming the keyboard is broken.
Windows: use Print Screen or Windows + Shift + S
Find the Print Screen key
Microsoft says the PRINT SCREEN key is usually in the upper-right area of a keyboard. Labels include PrtSc, PrtScn, Print Scr or Print Screen. On a full-size keyboard it is commonly grouped with Insert, Home, Page Up, Page Down, End and Delete.
Laptop and compact keyboards may combine that action with another key. Look for a small camera or screen icon, read the key legend, and try the keyboard’s Fn modifier if the printed shortcut does not respond. The exact Fn combination is manufacturer-specific.

Capture the whole screen
- Press Print Screen (PrtSc).
- Open the app where you want the image and use its paste command if Windows placed the capture on the clipboard, or check the screenshot notification and configured save destination.
Clipboard and automatic-save behavior can differ by Windows edition, version and settings, so do not rely on one folder being universal.
Capture a rectangle, window or full display with the selection tool
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Choose the capture mode shown on screen, such as a rectangular area or window.
- Drag over the area or select the window.
- Use the notification that appears to edit, copy or save the capture.
This is the most useful fallback when a laptop has no visible Print Screen key. It also avoids capturing unrelated monitors or desktop content.
Mac: no Print Screen key is needed
Capture the entire display
Press and release Shift + Command + 3 together. Apple documents this as the standard full-screen screenshot shortcut.
Capture part of the screen
- Press Shift + Command + 4.
- Drag the crosshair over the area you want.
- Release to complete the capture.
Capture a window or menu
- Press Shift + Command + 4.
- Press Space to switch to window or menu capture.
- Select the highlighted window or menu.
macOS versions and settings can alter whether a capture is immediately saved or copied. If you cannot find the image, use the screenshot controls or the destination configured on your Mac rather than searching for a Windows-style Print Screen key.

Chromebook and ChromeOS: Screenshot or Show windows
Chromebooks with a dedicated Screenshot key
Some Chromebook keyboards include a key labeled Screenshot. Press it to open ChromeOS’s capture controls. The key is usually in the top row, but its position depends on the model.
Chromebooks with Show windows
The Show windows key has a rectangle with two vertical lines beside it. Google lists these shortcuts:
- Ctrl + Show windows for a full-screen screenshot.
- Ctrl + Shift + Show windows to open the capture tool for an area or other available mode.
Use the on-screen controls to choose what to capture and where to save or copy it. ChromeOS updates can add or rearrange capture modes, so the toolbar is the authority on your device.

External keyboard without Show windows
With an external keyboard that lacks the Chromebook-specific key, Google lists Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the substitute for the capture tool. This is useful with USB or Bluetooth keyboards designed for Windows or Mac.

Linux: the desktop environment decides
GNOME
GNOME documents Shift + Prnt Scrn for taking a screenshot of an area. The spelling on the key may be Prnt Scrn, PrtSc or Print Screen. Press the combination, select the region, and follow the desktop’s save prompt.
KDE, Xfce and other desktops
Linux has no single universal screenshot key. KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon, Wayland compositors and distributions can assign different actions to Print Screen or provide their own capture utility. Open the desktop’s keyboard-shortcut settings and search for screenshot, screen capture or Print Screen. You can then assign a full-screen and a region shortcut separately.
If a graphical shortcut is unavailable, use the screenshot application supplied by your distribution. Avoid assuming that a shortcut documented for GNOME applies to every Linux desktop.

- Windows laptop: try Windows + Shift + S; it does not require a dedicated physical key.
- Compact Windows keyboard: inspect alternate legends and try the documented Fn layer, then check Windows keyboard-shortcut settings.
- Mac: use the Command shortcuts; a Print Screen key is unnecessary.
- Chromebook: use the Screenshot key, Show windows combinations or Ctrl + Shift + F5 on an external keyboard.
- Linux: assign a shortcut in your desktop environment or launch its capture tool.
- Any computer: a USB or Bluetooth keyboard with a clearly labeled Print Screen key can provide a familiar control, but it will not change the operating system’s save behavior.
Why a screenshot shortcut may appear not to work
The key is on an Fn layer
On many laptops, the screenshot action shares a key with another function. Check the icon and try Fn plus that key. Function-lock settings can reverse which action is primary.

You are using the wrong platform shortcut
Print Screen, Command and Show windows are not interchangeable. Confirm whether the computer runs Windows, macOS, ChromeOS or a specific Linux desktop, then use that platform’s combination.
The capture happened but you cannot find it
A shortcut may copy an image, open a capture toolbar or save automatically. Check the clipboard by pasting into an image editor, inspect the notification, and review the screenshot utility’s destination. Save and clipboard behavior is version- and settings-dependent.
A managed or accessibility setting intercepts the keys
Keyboard remappers, accessibility features, remote-desktop software and enterprise policies can intercept screenshot combinations. Temporarily disable remapping, test the shortcut in a local session, or assign a different combination in the operating system.

Only one monitor or the wrong window is captured
Use the region or window mode rather than the full-screen shortcut. On Windows, Windows + Shift + S lets you select precisely; on macOS, use Shift + Command + 4 and optionally press Space for a window; on ChromeOS, open the capture tool.

Yes. Windows and Linux desktop environments provide keyboard-shortcut or remapping settings, and ChromeOS offers its own shortcut controls. The exact menu depends on the operating system and desktop.
