There is no universal function key for screenshots. On Windows, use Print Screen (often labeled PrtSc or PrtScn) or Windows + Shift + S. On a Mac, use Shift + Command + 3, 4 or 5. On a Chromebook, use the dedicated Screenshot key or a Ctrl combination with Show windows. F11 is not a general screenshot key.

What counts as a “function key” here?
People often call any top-row key an F key, but screenshot controls are usually not F1–F12 keys. Windows uses a dedicated Print Screen key, macOS uses Command-based shortcuts, and ChromeOS uses Screenshot or Show windows. Key labels and layouts vary: Print Screen may appear as PrtSc, PrtScn or PrntScrn, normally near the upper-right of a Windows keyboard.
Compact laptops may put Print Screen on a shared key. Hold Fn when the printed label indicates that secondary function. Some models also require a manufacturer-specific Fn-lock mode. Check the symbols on your keyboard before assuming a shortcut is broken.

Capture everything
Press Print Screen. Windows normally places the image on the clipboard, so open Paint, an email, a chat or another image-capable app and press Ctrl + V to paste it. If your Windows setting maps Print Screen to screen snipping, the overlay appears instead; select the capture mode and then save or copy the result.

Capture a region or window
Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool bar appears. Select rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip or full-screen snip. A notification opens the editor, where you can annotate, copy or save the file.
Capture only the active window
Click the window you want, then press Alt + Print Screen. The result is copied to the clipboard rather than automatically saved as a file. Paste it into an editor and save it in the format you need.
When the key is missing
Try the documented Fn + Windows + Space combination if your device has no usable Print Screen key. This is hardware-dependent, so it will not work on every laptop. Windows + Shift + S is usually the more consistent software alternative.
Mac screenshot shortcuts in detail
Full display
Press Shift + Command + 3. macOS normally saves the image to the desktop. If you hold Control with the shortcut, macOS copies the capture to the clipboard instead of saving it as a file.

Selected area
Press Shift + Command + 4, drag across the required area and release. Press Escape before releasing if you change your mind.
Window or menu
Press Shift + Command + 4, press Space, then click the window or menu. This captures the selected interface element with macOS’s normal window styling.
Screenshot controls and recording
Press Shift + Command + 5 on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later. The control bar provides full-screen and selection captures plus screen-recording options and destination settings. Apple Support lists that shortcut for those macOS versions; labels and defaults can change after system updates.

Using the dedicated key
Press the key marked with a rectangle and corner lines (the Screenshot key). ChromeOS opens capture controls so you can choose full screen, a partial area or a window.

Using Show windows
On keyboards without a dedicated Screenshot key, press Ctrl + Show windows for a screenshot. The Show windows key usually looks like a rectangle followed by two vertical lines. For capture options or a partial capture, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows.
External keyboards
If an external keyboard has no Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the fallback. Chromebook models, keyboard languages and administrator settings can affect which combinations are available.
Where your screenshot goes
- Windows Print Screen and Alt + Print Screen: usually the clipboard. Paste immediately into an app before copying something else.
- Windows Snipping Tool: the capture can be copied and saved from the Snipping Tool notification or editor.
- Mac: shortcuts normally save a file to the desktop; adding Control copies it to the clipboard. The Screenshot controls can change the destination.
- Chromebook: captures are copied to the clipboard and saved in Downloads by default.
Why F11 is the wrong answer
F11 is commonly assigned to maximize or restore a window in Windows. It is not the general screenshot command. ChromeOS documentation treats F11/F12 separately for keyboard customization and uses Show windows combinations for screenshots. If a website or video says “press F11 to screenshot,” it may be describing a particular application, browser extension or keyboard remap—not a universal operating-system shortcut.
Common problems and fixes
Nothing appears after pressing Print Screen
Print Screen may have copied the image silently. Open Paint or another editor and press Ctrl + V. If that fails, try Windows + Shift + S. On a laptop, repeat the attempt with Fn.

The wrong screen is captured
For Windows, click the target window before using Alt + Print Screen. For multi-monitor setups, use Windows + Shift + S and select the exact display or region. On a Mac, Shift + Command + 4 lets you draw the boundary yourself.
The shortcut conflicts with another program
Overlay utilities, keyboard managers and remote-desktop software can intercept screenshot combinations. Quit those tools temporarily, test the built-in shortcut, then assign a different shortcut inside the conflicting application if necessary.
The screenshot is not where expected
Check the clipboard first, then Windows Snipping Tool, the Mac desktop, or Chromebook Downloads. A clipboard image is temporary; paste and save it before restarting or copying another item.
A Chromebook key is unavailable
Use Ctrl + Show windows, Shift + Ctrl + Show windows for capture options, or Ctrl + Shift + F5 with an external keyboard that lacks Show windows. Keyboard layouts and ChromeOS policies can alter availability.
