A tracking number that starts with E most often belongs to an EMS or other international postal express shipment—but E alone does not identify one carrier. Check the first two letters and the final two-letter country code. For example, USPS lists both EA...US and EC...US tracking-number formats, while the international postal standard assigns the EA–EZ range to EMS-related services.
What does an E-prefix tracking number usually mean?
If the full number has the standard 13-character international postal format, an initial pair from EA through EZ usually indicates an EMS-related postal service. EMS is an international express postal service supported by designated national postal operators, not one universal private carrier. The originating post may issue the number, and another country’s postal service may handle delivery after the parcel crosses a border. EMS describes its service and postal network; the UPU S10 standard defines the identifier format and service-indicator ranges.
USPS is one possible operator, not the answer for every number beginning with E. Its examples include EC 000 000 000 US for Priority Mail Express International and EA 000 000 000 US for Priority Mail Express. USPS’s examples are listed on its tracking page.

A typical UPU S10 identifier has 13 characters: two letters, nine digits, and two letters. For example:

EE123456785KR
EE: the service indicator. The UPU assigns theEA–EZrange to EMS, subject to rules for some subranges.12345678: the serial number.5: the check digit.KR: the country code associated with the issuing postal administration—in this example, South Korea.
The suffix does not tell you the parcel’s current location or guarantee which company will make the final delivery. A parcel issued under China’s postal system, for example, may be handed to USPS in the United States. Labels may include spaces for readability; remove them when checking the format, but enter the letters and digits exactly as supplied.
What different E-prefix patterns suggest
| Number or clue | Likely interpretation | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
EA–EZ + nine digits + two-letter suffix |
International postal identifier in the EMS-related S10 service-indicator range. | Try EMS, then the issuing country’s and destination country’s postal trackers. |
EC#########US |
USPS lists this pattern as Priority Mail Express International. | USPS. |
EA#########US |
USPS lists this pattern as Priority Mail Express. | USPS. |
13-character number ending in CN, KR, JP, or another country code |
The suffix generally identifies the issuing postal administration, not necessarily the current or final-mile carrier. | The postal operator associated with the suffix, then EMS or the destination post. |
A single leading E followed by digits, without the full S10 structure |
Not enough information to identify a carrier; it may be a private carrier, marketplace, or freight-forwarder reference. | Ask the seller for the complete carrier tracking number and shipping provider. |
Where should you track it?
- Start with USPS when the number ends in
USor appears to be a USPS express item. Enter the complete number on USPS Tracking. - Try EMS for a 13-character number beginning
EAthroughEZ. The EMS tracking page requests a 13-digit item number. - Check the postal operator associated with the final two letters. A number ending in
CN, for example, may first be recognized by the issuing country’s postal tracker. - Check the destination postal operator if the parcel has entered the destination country or been handed over for local delivery.
- Ask the seller or marketplace for clarification if none of those services recognizes the number. Request the carrier name, full tracking number, shipping service, and any destination-country handoff carrier.
Why might tracking show no result yet?
A number can be created before a postal operator has a physical scan or a complete tracking history. USPS says tracking can begin when the sender or a shipping partner electronically notifies it to expect a package; that advance notice does not mean USPS has already scanned the parcel. See USPS’s explanation of tracking events.

- The origin service has created the number but has not sent an event to the destination post.
- The parcel has not yet reached the postal operator whose tracker you are checking.
- Electronic handoff data has not appeared in that operator’s system.
- The number is an EMS identifier better recognized by EMS or the origin postal service.
- The seller supplied an order or logistics reference rather than the carrier’s actual tracking number.
Use the full number without extra punctuation or prefixes, then try the relevant origin or EMS tracker. If the format is not 13 characters, do not assume it is EMS; ask the sender to confirm the carrier and provide the carrier-issued number. USPS also uses other formats for domestic and other mail services, so character count alone does not identify a shipment.
