That is the default folder for files created with Windows logo + PrtScn on Windows 10 and Windows 11. If the folder is empty, the shortcut you used may have copied the image only to the clipboard or saved it somewhere configured in Snipping Tool.
Find the default Screenshots folder
- Open File Explorer from the taskbar or press Windows logo + E.
- In the navigation pane, open Pictures.
- Open Screenshots.
Files made with Windows logo + PrtScn normally appear there. The folder may be under your local profile, such as C:UsersYourNamePicturesScreenshots, but use File Explorer rather than typing a path because Pictures can be redirected to another drive or a cloud-synced location.
If Pictures or Screenshots is missing, do not create a new folder immediately. First check whether the Pictures library was moved, redirected, or included in OneDrive. A redirected Pictures folder has the same Screenshots subfolder relative to its new location.
The shortcut determines whether a file exists
“Screenshot” is not one Windows operation. The key combination controls whether Windows writes an image file, copies pixels to the clipboard, or opens an editor.

The distinction explains most “missing screenshot” reports: a clipboard capture has no file to find until an application saves it.
When you used Snipping Tool
Pressing Windows logo + Shift + S dims the screen and displays the Snipping Tool overlay. Select the capture mode, drag or click the area, and open the resulting notification or Snipping Tool window if you need to annotate it.
Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool guidance says a captured snip is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder. Automatic saving and the default folder can be changed, so an empty standard folder is not conclusive.
Inspect the automatic-save setting
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Choose See More (the three-dot menu).
- Select Settings.
- Review the automatic-save option and the configured Screenshots folder. The exact switches can vary by Windows release.
You can always save an individual capture manually: open it in Snipping Tool, choose Save as, select a known folder, and note the filename. Saving manually is useful when an organization has disabled automatic saving or when you need a project-specific directory.

Check OneDrive-backed Pictures
OneDrive can make the visible path different from the local profile path. Microsoft’s current OneDrive documentation says the old Save screenshots to OneDrive switch is no longer available. The supported approach is to include Pictures in OneDrive folder backup.
- Open the OneDrive folder in File Explorer.
- Open its Pictures folder, then Screenshots.
- Compare that folder with the local Pictures view and check the OneDrive status icons if a file is still synchronizing.
If Pictures backup is enabled, the screenshot may be in the OneDrive-backed Pictures folder rather than the local path you first checked. A cloud-only item may need to finish syncing before another device can open it.
Search the computer when the folder is unknown
Use search after checking the shortcut and Snipping Tool settings. Search can find files in local storage and OneDrive.
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC for a broad search, or select your OneDrive folder if you know the capture was synced.
- In the search box, enter part of the filename, an extension such as
*.png, or a distinctive word from the name. - Sort results by Date modified so the newest capture is easy to identify.
- Right-click a result and choose Open file location to learn the actual folder.
Search is especially helpful after using Snipping Tool’s Save as, because that command can target any folder, not just Screenshots.

Recover a capture that is only on the clipboard
If you pressed PrtScn or Alt + PrtScn, open an image-capable application immediately and paste with Ctrl + V. In Paint, for example, paste the image, choose File > Save as, select PNG or another format, and save it to the folder you want.
The clipboard is temporary. Copying another item can replace the image, and a restart or sign-out can discard it depending on your clipboard configuration. If paste produces nothing, Windows no longer has that capture available through the clipboard; take the screenshot again with a save-producing method.
What to do when Screenshots is empty
You used Windows logo + PrtScn
Check the Pictures folder’s location, including any OneDrive-backed version. Then search This PC for recently modified image files. If no result appears, repeat the shortcut once and watch for the screen briefly dimming; keyboard utilities or a disabled key can intercept PrtScn.
You used PrtScn or Alt + PrtScn
There may be no file. Paste into Paint or another editor and save it manually. Looking in Screenshots will not recover a clipboard-only capture.

You used Windows logo + Shift + S
Open Snipping Tool settings and verify automatic saving and its destination. Also open the capture from the notification and use Save as. If automatic saving is disabled, manual saving is required.
You cannot find the PrtScn key
Some compact keyboards label it PrtSc, Print Screen, or place it behind an Fn layer. Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo + Spacebar as a possible alternative, but the exact combination is hardware-dependent. Consult the keyboard’s own layout if that shortcut does not respond.
Prevent future confusion
- Use Windows logo + PrtScn when you want a predictable file in Screenshots.
- Use Windows logo + Shift + S when you need to select an area, then confirm Snipping Tool’s automatic-save setting.
- Use PrtScn or Alt + PrtScn only when you intend to paste and save in another application.
- Create a project folder and use Snipping Tool’s Save as when captures need descriptive names or a shared location.
- If you rely on another device, include Pictures in OneDrive backup and verify that synchronization has completed.

Does Windows use the same folder for every screenshot method?
No. Windows logo + PrtScn has a default file location, while PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn copy to the clipboard. Snipping Tool follows its save settings.
Can I find a screenshot if I do not know its filename?
Yes. Search This PC or OneDrive in File Explorer, filter by an image extension, and sort by Date modified.
Is the OneDrive screenshot switch still available?
Microsoft says the dedicated “Save screenshots to OneDrive” setting is no longer available; Pictures folder backup is the supported route.
