Press Windows logo key + Print Screen to save a full-screen screenshot as a file in PicturesScreenshots. Pressing Print Screen by itself normally copies the screen to the Windows Clipboard instead, so there may be no file to find until you paste the image into an app and save it. If the saved screenshot is missing from the usual folder, check where your Pictures folder is located, including whether it is redirected or synced to OneDrive.
Where to find a screenshot saved with Windows + Print Screen
- Open File Explorer.
- Select Pictures.
- Open Screenshots.
The usual folder path is PicturesScreenshots inside your Windows account’s Pictures folder. The exact physical location depends on how that Pictures folder is configured. If it is redirected or synced, for example through OneDrive, the Screenshots folder may be inside that provider’s Pictures location rather than under the local account folder you expected.
This shortcut captures the full screen and saves a PNG file. If you have more than one display, the captured image may include the full screen area rather than just the window you are working in. To capture only a region or window, use Snipping Tool instead.
What Print Screen does by itself
Pressing Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc or PrtScn) generally copies a static image of the full screen to the Windows Clipboard. It does not, by itself, save a regular image file in Pictures or another folder. That is why searching File Explorer after pressing the key may turn up nothing.

Paste and save the image
- Open Paint or another app that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the Clipboard image.
- In Paint, choose File > Save as.
- Choose the file type, filename, and folder, then save.
Until you paste and save it, the captured image is in the Clipboard, not a screenshot file you can browse to. If you copied something else afterward, the earlier Clipboard image may no longer be available.
Print Screen, Windows + Print Screen, and Snipping Tool compared
| Action | Immediate result | Where to find the result |
|---|---|---|
| Print Screen | Copies a full-screen image to the Clipboard. | Paste into Paint or another app, then save the file where you choose. |
| Windows logo key + Print Screen | Saves a full-screen PNG image. | Open Pictures > Screenshots, allowing for any redirection or sync setting on Pictures. |
| Snipping Tool capture | Captures a selected area or other chosen snip and opens it in Snipping Tool; the capture is automatically saved. | Look in the Screenshots folder, or use Snipping Tool’s Save as control to choose a filename and location. |
Use Snipping Tool for a region or window
Snipping Tool is the better choice when you do not want a full-screen capture. Open the app from Windows Search, or use its documented keyboard shortcut, then select the capture mode and area or window. After capture, the image opens in Snipping Tool. Microsoft says a captured snip is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder; you can also choose Save as to save it under a different name or in another location.

You pressed Print Screen, not Windows + Print Screen
A screenshot made with Print Screen alone is typically on the Clipboard, not in a folder. Open Paint, press Ctrl+V, then use File > Save as. For an automatically saved full-screen file next time, press Windows logo key + Print Screen.

Your Pictures folder is redirected or synced
The Screenshots folder follows the configured Pictures location. In File Explorer, select Pictures from the navigation pane and look there for Screenshots. If Pictures opens at a OneDrive or other redirected location, check its Screenshots subfolder. The visible Pictures entry is more reliable than guessing a path based on the Windows account name.
You used Snipping Tool
Check the Screenshots folder for the automatically saved capture. If you chose Save as, look in the location you selected; it can differ from the automatic destination.

Your keyboard uses a different key combination
Some devices do not have a dedicated Print Screen key. Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar for such devices. Keyboard layouts and hardware differ, so check the device’s key labels and instructions if that combination does not capture anything. A USB keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen/PrtScn key is another option.
