For most small websites, keep images in the CMS media library if your hosting plan has enough storage and its backups include those files. If you need separate storage or a different delivery setup, use cloud object storage such as Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, or Amazon S3 for live images. In either case, treat image delivery and website backup as separate jobs: a live image bucket does not, by itself, preserve a restorable copy of your whole website.
Image hosting and website backup solve different problems
An image host stores and delivers files visitors request, such as product photos, article illustrations, and logos. A website backup preserves the components needed to recover the site after deletion, corruption, or a failed change. Depending on the site, that means images and other files plus the database, code or theme, configuration, and any other required data.
A bucket serving the images currently used on your site is not automatically a backup. Files may be deleted, overwritten, made inaccessible by a credentials or configuration problem, or simply be only one part of what a restoration requires. Keep a separately managed backup that includes the site database and other essential files, retain recoverable copies, and test restoring them.

Choose where to store live website images
Keep images in the CMS media library
For a smaller site, this is usually the simplest option. Images remain alongside the site files, and the CMS continues to manage their paths and metadata. It can also be the easiest arrangement to restore if your hosting provider’s backup workflow includes the media directory.
Before relying on the host, verify exactly what its backup covers: media files, database, configuration, and any other site data you need. Check how long copies are retained, how you request or perform a restore, and whether you can retrieve a copy if the hosting account itself is unavailable. Backup coverage and recovery procedures depend on the host; do not infer them from the presence of a media library.
Move live media to object storage
Cloud object storage is a practical option when the site needs media stored separately from its web host, or when the delivery architecture calls for a bucket and a CDN. The providers below document use cases for static media and S3-compatible integrations. None is universally cheapest or best: the right fit depends on your CMS or backup tool’s compatibility, access policy, expected traffic, geography, migration effort, and recovery plan.

| Service | Documented fit | Points to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare R2 | Object storage with an S3-compatible API; supports public buckets for HTTP delivery and presigned URLs for temporary private access. | Choose a bucket location and storage class, scope API credentials to the buckets that need them, and configure public access only for assets intended to be public. |
| Backblaze B2 | General cloud object storage with S3-compatible integrations; can serve public website content through a custom domain and Cloudflare CDN. | Configure the hostname and origin carefully so requests are scoped to the intended bucket. B2 requires HTTPS for the documented public-delivery setup. |
| Amazon S3 | AWS describes S3 as suitable for relatively static or slow-changing assets such as images and videos, with CloudFront available for edge caching and delivery. | Choose and configure a delivery path appropriate to the site’s access needs. AWS’s whitepaper describes S3 as “a highly available and redundant object store”; that statement is AWS’s characterization, not a guarantee about a particular site’s configuration or recovery process. |
R2 and B2 both document S3-compatible APIs, which can reduce migration friction when software supports S3-style endpoints. Backblaze recommends its S3-compatible API for new integrations. Compatibility does not eliminate configuration work: clients may need the correct endpoint, credentials, bucket, and access settings.

Decide whether images should be public or private
Website images intended for visitors need a delivery path that allows those visitors to fetch them. A public bucket can provide unauthenticated reads, but public access is appropriate only for files meant to be public. Do not put backups, private uploads, or sensitive documents in a publicly readable bucket.
For private objects, a service may support temporary signed access. Cloudflare documents presigned URLs for private R2 access. Keep signing credentials secure and give links only the scope and lifetime required by the application. If a bucket contains both public website media and private material, separating those purposes into different buckets can make access rules easier to reason about.
For a custom domain or CDN, follow the provider’s current configuration guidance rather than exposing a broad origin mapping by default. Backblaze’s public B2 and CDN guidance warns that an overly broad mapping may allow requests for other public buckets; scope paths to the intended bucket and verify the resulting hostname and HTTPS behavior.

Storage location and delivery configuration affect what visitors experience. Cloudflare identifies bucket geography, request origin, and access patterns as factors in R2 read performance. Edge caching can reduce latency by serving cached copies nearer to users, but a cache may not immediately show a changed object.

Set cache behavior according to how often assets change. A versioned filename for a replaced image can make it easier to serve the new file while retaining long cache lifetimes for older URLs. If filenames remain fixed, plan how to invalidate or refresh cached copies after edits. Backblaze’s bucket guidance supports cache-control metadata; choose values that match your update pattern rather than treating every image as immutable.
Do not assume that moving images to a bucket automatically makes delivery faster. Results depend on the bucket location, where users and requests originate, the CDN or cache setup, and how often content is updated. Validate the actual configuration for your audience and application.
Move existing images without creating a fragile migration
- Inventory the files and references. Identify the media directories, approximate object sizes, CMS references, and any custom code that constructs image URLs. Decide whether the migration changes stored files only or also changes the URLs the site emits.
- Choose the destination and access model. Create the bucket, select its location and storage class where applicable, and decide whether the files are public or private. Create narrowly scoped credentials and store them as secrets, not in public source code.
- Test a small sample first. Upload representative files, including a large image and any formats your site uses. Confirm that expected URLs resolve, permissions are correct, HTTPS works through the intended delivery path, and the CMS or application can generate the right references.
- Transfer the full library with a suitable tool. For modest files, a single PUT may be appropriate. Cloudflare recommends multipart upload for large files or when reliability matters: failed parts can be retried rather than restarting the entire upload. Tools such as rclone or other S3-compatible clients can assist with bulk transfers.
- Verify before switching traffic. Compare the destination against the source, check representative pages and image URLs, and retain the original files until the new delivery path has been validated. If you update CMS references, make a database backup first and confirm you can reverse the change.
- Set cache and recovery policies. Configure cache metadata for the expected update frequency, then set up a separate backup workflow that includes all files and the database. Test that you can restore the backup rather than relying on a successful upload as proof of recovery.
Make a separate, restorable website backup
Keep the backup job independent from the live image-delivery path. Depending on the site’s architecture, that may mean copying the database, application files, configuration, and media to an off-site destination with version retention. Protect backup credentials, keep copies that are not simply the same live objects exposed to the website, and periodically restore into a safe test environment.

Backblaze lists tools and services for backups to B2, including rclone, Duplicati, Synology Hyper Backup, QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync, and Arq Backup. Check that a selected tool covers the site’s actual components and supports the retention and restore workflow you need. A tool’s ability to write files to object storage does not establish that it is backing up your CMS database or that the resulting copy can be restored.

Compare total cost rather than storage alone
Provider charges and limits can change, and no current comparative prices are established here. Check each provider’s current pricing for storage, requests, retrieval, and bandwidth before committing. Estimate usage from your own expected object volume and traffic, including image reads by visitors and transfers during backup or migration.
Also account for operational cost: time to configure a custom domain and HTTPS, maintain credentials, update cache behavior, troubleshoot CMS integration, migrate existing URLs, and recover the site. A host-provided media library may be simpler when it meets your needs; object storage may suit a separate delivery design, but it adds configuration and recovery decisions.

Common problems and fixes
Images return an access error
Check whether the object is intentionally private, whether the website is using the correct public URL or signed URL, and whether the bucket policy and credentials grant the required access. Do not solve a private-object error by making an entire bucket public unless every object in it is meant for public access.

Images work at the origin but not through the custom domain
Verify the hostname-to-origin mapping, HTTPS configuration, path scope, and the bucket name or prefix. For B2 with a CDN, check that the mapping is limited to the intended bucket; a mapping that is too broad can expose requests to other public buckets.
A replaced image still looks old
The browser or edge cache may still hold a previous copy. Review cache-control metadata and CDN invalidation behavior. For future replacements, use a new versioned filename or ensure your workflow refreshes the cached object.
A large upload fails partway through
Use multipart upload for large or reliability-sensitive files so failed parts can be retried rather than restarting the entire transfer. For a bulk migration, use a transfer tool that can resume or retry and verify the completed destination against the source.
The bucket is fast for some visitors and slow for others
Review the bucket location, request origins, access pattern, and edge-cache configuration. Cloudflare notes these as factors for R2 read performance; a CDN may help, but confirm that its cache rules still provide the freshness your image updates require.
Quick Recap
Recommended setup by site type
- Small site with adequate host storage: keep images in the CMS media library and confirm the host’s backup includes both files and database.
- Site separating media delivery from application hosting: use an object-storage bucket configured for the intended public or private access pattern, and test the custom domain, HTTPS, and cache behavior.
- Any site that needs disaster recovery: maintain a separate backup workflow for the whole site, retain recoverable copies, and test restoration. Do not count the live image store alone as the backup.
