That is where Windows normally stores full-screen images made with Windows + Print Screen, and where Snipping Tool can automatically save snips on supported Windows 11 setups. If OneDrive backs up or redirects your Pictures folder, look under OneDrive > Pictures > Screenshots instead.
If you pressed Print Screen by itself, Windows usually copied the image to the clipboard rather than creating a file. Open Paint or another image-capable app, press Ctrl + V, and save the pasted image. A Snipping Tool recording is a video and is stored separately in Screen Recordings.
Where each Windows capture method saves your image

Find a file made with Windows + Print Screen
- Open File Explorer.
- Select Pictures in the navigation pane.
- Open Screenshots.
The shortcut saves a full-screen still directly as an image. The exact drive and parent folders can differ if your Pictures library has been moved, synchronized, or controlled by an organization. If the folder is empty, do not assume the capture failed; check the OneDrive path and use the search steps below.
What happens when you press Print Screen alone
A standalone PrtSc press is commonly a clipboard operation. It may not create anything in Pictures, so searching for a new file can never find that particular capture until you save it.

- Open Paint (or Word, an email composer, or another app that accepts images).
- Press Ctrl + V.
- In Paint, choose File > Save as, select a known folder, and give the image a filename.
If Ctrl + V inserts the expected screen image, the keyboard capture worked and only the save step was missing. If nothing is pasted, take another capture and immediately test the clipboard in Paint; another application or a managed policy may have changed the behavior.
Snipping Tool: automatic and manual saves
Automatic save
Microsoft states that, after you capture a snip, it is automatically saved to your Screenshots folder. On supported Windows 11 configurations, that generally means PicturesScreenshots. Open Snipping Tool and review its Settings if a snip appears in the app but no file appears in that folder. The available settings and labels can vary by Windows build.

Manual Save as Image
A snip saved through the app’s Save as Image command goes wherever you chose in the Save dialog. The destination can therefore be Downloads, Desktop, a project folder, or a network location rather than Pictures. When you need a predictable location, use Save as Image and select the folder yourself.
Open the folder from Snipping Tool
Some versions provide an Open screenshots folder command. Use it when available instead of guessing the path; it opens the folder that the current installation uses for automatic screenshots.

Where Snipping Tool recordings are stored
Snipping Tool can record a video of on-screen activity. Recordings are stored in a Screen Recordings folder, separately from still PNG screenshots in PicturesScreenshots. If you are looking for a video, search for Screen Recordings first and do not limit the search to the Screenshots folder.
Check OneDrive and folder redirection
OneDrive backup or a Windows folder-redirection policy can move the effective Pictures location. In File Explorer, expand OneDrive, open Pictures, and then open Screenshots. Compare the address bar with the local Pictures path; the folder that Windows currently uses is the one that will contain automatically saved captures.

This also applies when an employer or school manages the computer. A policy can redirect known folders to another drive or network location. In that situation, the standard folder name can still be Screenshots even though the full path is different.
Search for a recent screenshot when the folder is unclear
- Open File Explorer.
- Choose This PC or the drive where you normally store user files.
- Search for
Screenshot. - Sort or filter the results by Date modified so the newest PNG files appear first.
- Open a likely result to verify that it contains the screen you captured.
Searching by the word Screenshot is useful for the Windows shortcut’s default names, but it will not find a clipboard-only capture because no file exists yet. It also may not find a manually saved snip if you gave it a different name.

Troubleshooting: the common cases

Use the capture method that matches your goal
- Need an automatic full-screen file: press Windows + Print Screen and check PicturesScreenshots (including the OneDrive equivalent).
- Need to edit or paste the entire screen: press Print Screen, paste from the clipboard, and save from the receiving app.
- Need only part of the display: use Snipping Tool and either rely on its automatic save or choose Save as Image.
- Need a video: use Snipping Tool recording and check Screen Recordings.
- Need a known destination: use Save as Image and select the folder explicitly.
Prevent the next capture from being hard to find
- Before capturing, decide whether you need a still image or a recording.
- For a still that should appear automatically, use Windows + Print Screen and confirm the current Pictures location.
- For a clipboard capture, paste it immediately into Paint and save it rather than leaving it only in memory.
- For Snipping Tool, check Settings and use Open screenshots folder or Save as Image when you need certainty.
- If OneDrive is enabled, remember that the visible OneDrive Pictures folder may be the effective destination.
