Unsplash is another polished photography source, with restrictions on certain kinds of redistribution. After choosing an image, use WordPress’s background controls to position and size it, then check the result on mobile and desktop.

WordPress Photo Directory: the simplest starting point
The directory’s photos are labeled CC0, which permits broad reuse without attribution. WordPress.org displayed 44,318 photos when its directory page was accessed in 2026; that live count can change. As with any image source, check the asset’s page and consider whether separate rights issues apply to recognizable people, brands, artwork or private locations.
Openverse: more variety, more license checking
Openverse is a discovery tool, not a universal image host. Its handbook describes an index of hundreds of millions of Creative Commons-licensed images and audio files, a scale description rather than a fixed, audited inventory. Search filters include license, source, aspect ratio, commercial use, size and media type. A filter helps narrow results, but the original host’s page is where you should confirm the terms for the specific work.
Unsplash: strong photography with limits
Unsplash grants a broad license for free commercial use, without requiring permission or photographer attribution. The license does not allow selling images without significant modification or compiling them to replicate a similar or competing service. Read the current Unsplash license before using an image, especially if you plan to redistribute it rather than use it as part of your site’s design.

How to check an image’s reuse terms
- Open the original asset page, not just the search result or thumbnail.
- Record the license, creator, source URL and any required attribution wording before downloading.
- Look for recognizable people, trademarks, logos, artworks or locations. A permissive copyright license does not necessarily resolve separate rights or permissions involving those subjects.
- Keep a screenshot or archive of the license page as it appeared when you published the image.
“Free” does not mean every use is unrestricted. Openverse results can have different Creative Commons terms, and Unsplash’s license excludes particular redistribution uses.
How to add a background image in WordPress
The available controls depend on your theme and the block you are editing. WordPress documentation describes the Background settings as controls for supported blocks, which may include images, colors and gradients.

Set a site-wide background
- In a supported block theme, open Appearance → Editor → Styles → Background.
- Choose or upload an image, then adjust its position, size and repeat behavior using the available controls.
- Preview the site at desktop and mobile widths before publishing. A theme may not expose every background control.
Set a background for an individual block
- Select the block in the editor and open its settings.
- Find Background, choose Image, then upload an image or select one from the Media Library.
- Set the focal point to keep the important subject visible as the block is cropped at different screen sizes.
- Choose a size that fits the intended effect: Cover fills the area but may crop the image; Contain keeps the whole image visible but may leave empty space; Tile repeats a pattern.
- If the controls offer a fixed background, use it when the image should stay in place as the page scrolls, then check its behavior on mobile devices.
Choose an image that looks good and loads efficiently
- Leave room for content. Choose a wide image with a calm area behind headings and buttons, rather than placing busy details directly under text.
- Check responsive crops. Cover crops different edges as the container changes shape. Test mobile and desktop widths, and adjust the focal point or CSS position to keep the subject in frame.
- Protect text contrast. Add a color overlay or gradient if needed, and check text readability and keyboard focus states against the background.
- Optimize the file. The WordPress Developer Blog recommends pattern media no bigger than 350 KB, with a maximum dimension of 2000 px, and suggests considering WebP or AVIF. These are practical recommendations, not a guarantee that every page will load quickly. ImageOptim for Mac and ImageMagick for Windows are named as optimization options.
- Measure the page. Check actual page performance after uploading; image format, dimensions, theme behavior and other page assets all affect the result.
No authoritative study or benchmark establishes a conversion lift from choosing a particular source for a WordPress background image. If a background is meant to improve engagement or sales, compare the page’s results with and without it rather than assuming a benefit.
