WhatsApp backups do not appear in My Drive as ordinary files. On Android, check Google Drive’s Storage > Backups area or Google One’s storage manager. You can view limited metadata and manage the backup there, but chats and media must be restored from inside WhatsApp.
Find the WhatsApp backup in Google Drive
Use the Google Account that WhatsApp used when the backup was created. Google’s documented route is:
- Open Google Drive and sign in.
- Select Storage in the left navigation.
- Open or scroll to Backups.
- Select the WhatsApp backup entry.
You can also open the Backups page directly at https://drive.google.com/drive/backups. Google’s storage guidance describes this management location at Google Drive Help.

If the Backups section is missing
Do not assume that no backup exists. Try these alternatives while signed in to the suspected account:
- Open Google One storage management and look for the backup or WhatsApp storage section.
- Check the Google Account Dashboard for Android or app-backup information.
- On the old phone, open WhatsApp and check Settings > Chats > Chat backup to identify the account, last successful date and size.
Google’s Help Community has documented cases where the management page differs between accounts; its guidance is supporting information, not a guarantee that every account has identical labels (community guidance).
Why it is not in My Drive
A WhatsApp Android backup is hidden, app-managed data associated with your Google Account. It is not a normal folder, PDF, ZIP or media file, so searching My Drive for a WhatsApp filename usually finds nothing. Google may expose metadata and deletion controls without exposing the backup’s contents (Google Drive Help Community explanation).

The backup uses your shared Google storage quota along with services such as Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. A large backup, especially one containing videos, can therefore contribute to a full account and failed future backups (Google’s storage guidance).
Can you open or download the chats?
No. Google Drive is not a WhatsApp chat browser and does not provide a readable download of individual conversations, photos or videos. WhatsApp controls the encrypted backup and its import process. Optional end-to-end encrypted backups add a password or 64-digit key; without that credential, WhatsApp and the backup provider cannot unlock the content (Meta’s explanation).
Finding the listing only confirms that Google has backup data associated with the account. It does not prove that the backup is intact or restorable.

Restore the backup through WhatsApp
Google Drive stores and manages the backup; WhatsApp performs the restoration. WhatsApp’s current Android instructions are the authority for the setup screens (WhatsApp restoration instructions).
- Install or reinstall WhatsApp on the Android phone.
- Add or select the same Google Account shown in the old phone’s Settings > Chats > Chat backup screen.
- Register the same phone number used when the backup was made.
- Complete phone-number verification and grant the requested permissions.
- When WhatsApp detects the backup, select Restore.
- Leave the process running. Message history normally appears first; media can continue restoring afterward.
Merely selecting a backup in Drive cannot restore chats. The account and phone-number match are both required.
WhatsApp says “no backup found”
Work through these checks in order:
- Google Account: Confirm it is exactly the account shown in WhatsApp’s Chat backup settings, not another account on the phone.
- Phone number: Verify the number is identical to the one that created the backup.
- Apps and services: Update WhatsApp and Google Play Services, then restart the phone.
- Connection and space: Use a stable connection and ensure both the device and Google Account have enough storage.
- Permissions: Allow WhatsApp the permissions requested during setup.
- Encryption credentials: Have the end-to-end encryption password or 64-digit key ready if that option was enabled.
- Backup condition: A listing may represent data that is corrupted, deleted, overwritten or too old to use.
- Platform: A Google Drive backup is for WhatsApp on Android; it is not an iCloud backup for iPhone.

Retention and overwritten copies
Google currently says a WhatsApp backup that has not been updated for five months may be automatically deleted (Google Drive Help). Do not assume Drive offers a selectable history of dated WhatsApp snapshots: a newer backup may replace the previous cloud copy. Deleted, overwritten, expired or corrupted backups are generally not recoverable.

Warning: Google says deleting a WhatsApp backup is permanent and can remove the only cloud copy of your chats. Do not delete it until restoration or another transfer has succeeded.

- Select the WhatsApp backup.
- Choose the delete option and confirm only after checking that it is no longer needed.
Deleting the cloud copy does not necessarily stop WhatsApp from creating another one. If your goal is to prevent recreation, change WhatsApp’s backup settings first. To reduce future size, review the backup frequency and exclude videos where appropriate; Google specifically recommends reducing backup size before deleting an existing copy (Google’s guidance).

Before changing or resetting your phone
- On the old phone, confirm the last successful backup date and size in WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- Record the Google Account and phone number shown there.
- Keep the end-to-end encryption password or key in a secure place.
- Do not uninstall WhatsApp, factory-reset the old phone or remove its account until restoration or WhatsApp’s direct transfer has completed.
If the old phone still works, WhatsApp’s direct chat-transfer feature may be preferable for a phone-to-phone move; see the current information at WhatsApp Help Center. A local device copy can also be a fallback, but it depends on the old phone and its storage remaining accessible.
Android, iPhone and managed accounts
This process applies to WhatsApp on Android using Google Account storage. iPhone WhatsApp backups use iCloud, so a Google Drive backup should not be described as directly restorable to an iPhone.
For a school or employer Google Workspace account, an administrator can disable third-party app backups, including WhatsApp backups, through the Third-party App Backups control (Google Workspace administrator documentation). Contact the administrator if the expected backup cannot be created or managed.

- Correct Google Account confirmed in WhatsApp?
- Correct phone number available?
- Backup visible at Drive Backups or Google One storage management?
- Last backup date and size acceptable?
- End-to-end encryption password or key available?
- Restoration being started inside WhatsApp—not Google Drive?
