The default Steam client folder in Windows 11 is C:Program Files (x86)Steam. The default location for installed game files is C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon. These are defaults: Steam can be installed elsewhere, and games can live in separate library folders on other drives.
If you need a particular game’s files, open its page in Steam and choose Manage > Browse local files. If you need to find all your libraries, check Steam > Settings > Storage.
Open the default Steam folder
In File Explorer, press Windows + E, click the address bar, enter this path, and press Enter:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamYou can also press Windows + R, enter the same path, and press Enter. If Steam is installed there, you should see steam.exe along with folders such as steamapps and, commonly, userdata. The steam.exe file is a useful check that you have the client folder, not just a similarly named directory.

Valve lists this as the default Windows location, but it is not guaranteed. Steam’s library guidance explains how to view and manage installation locations.
If Steam is not in the default location
Steam may be installed on another drive or in a folder chosen during setup. To check its current libraries and drives:
- Open Steam.
- Select Steam in the upper-left corner, then choose Settings.
- Select Storage.
The Storage screen lists Steam library locations registered with the client. The client itself and a game library do not have to be in the same folder. Custom paths might look like D:Steam or D:SteamLibrary, but users can choose other names and locations.

Searching for steamapps is another option, but it can return old installations, backups, or multiple libraries. Confirm that a result belongs to the active installation before changing anything. You can also right-click a Steam shortcut in Start or on the taskbar and choose Open file location if Windows offers that option. It may open a folder containing the shortcut rather than the program itself. If so, inspect the shortcut’s target or use File Explorer search to locate steam.exe.
Find a specific game’s installation folder
For a game installed through Steam, this is usually the quickest and most reliable route:
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the game.
- Choose Manage, then Browse local files.
Steam opens that game’s installation directory. Valve documents the usual Windows layout as [Steam Install]SteamAppscommon[Game Folder]. In the default library, the path begins:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonIf the game was installed to another library, its folder could instead be something like D:SteamLibrarysteamappscommon. The library name and drive vary. The Steamworks documentation describes the general game-installation pattern.

Game files are where many mods or manual file changes go, but mod instructions differ by title. Use Browse local files to identify the correct game directory rather than assuming every game has the same folder structure.
Understand the folders you may find
steam.exe: the Steam client executable.steamappscommon: the usual location for installed game directories within a library.steamappsworkshop: workshop-related content for games that use it.steamappsdownloading: files associated with downloads or updates in progress; do not treat it as the normal installed-game location.userdata: Steam user data within the client installation. It is not a universal location for every game save.
Not every library or game will contain all of these folders. Several may exist on different drives if you use multiple libraries.
Find game saves: they may be outside Steam
An installed game folder is not necessarily where the game stores your progress. Save locations vary by title and may be managed by Steam Cloud, stored under your Windows user profile, or handled another way. Common places to check include:

Paste a path into File Explorer’s address bar and press Enter; Windows resolves the %USERPROFILE% variable to your user folder. AppData is normally hidden in File Explorer, but entering its path directly will open it.

Steam warns that third-party game saves not synchronized through Steam Cloud are often in DocumentsMy Games, though the exact location depends on the game. Valve’s Steamworks documentation also lists common Windows storage roots such as Documents, AppData, and Saved Games. Check the game’s own support information before deleting or moving a suspected save folder.
Move a game or Steam without losing data
Moving one game and moving the Steam client are different tasks. For an individual game, use Steam’s Storage settings and built-in library management where available instead of dragging its folder manually. This helps Steam keep track of the game’s new location.
If you need to move the Steam client installation, exit Steam completely first. Back up important saves and settings, and do not casually delete steamapps or userdata. Valve’s move instructions identify steamapps, userdata, and steam.exe as items to preserve for its basic move procedure. A move does not guarantee that every save, mod, shortcut, or setting will transfer exactly as expected; saves outside the Steam folder need separate attention. After a move, Steam may update, and a game whose files are present but not recognized may need to be located through Storage or have its files verified.

Troubleshooting common problems
The default folder does not exist
That does not necessarily mean Steam is missing. Check Settings > Storage if Steam opens, or search File Explorer for steam.exe if it does not. Also check the target of a Steam shortcut.

Search finds more than one Steam folder
You may have multiple libraries, an old installation, or a backup. Use Settings > Storage to identify libraries registered with the running client. For a specific title, Library > right-click game > Manage > Browse local files removes the guesswork.
Game files are present, but Steam shows “Install”
First confirm that the files are in a library Steam currently recognizes. Check Settings > Storage and use the game’s Browse local files command if it is available. Do not delete or overwrite folders to make Steam detect the game; preserve the existing files and use Steam’s library or installation options to reconnect them.
Windows says access is denied
Opening or copying files is different from modifying protected files. Windows may request administrator approval when you edit or replace files under Program Files (x86). Do not change permissions on the entire Steam folder unless a specific problem requires it; that is generally unnecessary for finding game files.

Save locations are game-specific. Check the title’s support documentation and the user-profile folders listed above, and confirm whether that game uses Steam Cloud. Copying steamappscommon alone may not preserve progress.
