It does not use one universal Downloads, Documents, or application folder. For example, wkhtmltopdf https://example.com report.pdf writes report.pdf relative to the process’s current working directory. To specify the destination unambiguously, give an absolute path, such as wkhtmltopdf https://example.com /tmp/report.pdf.
How to tell where the PDF was saved
Read the command from left to right: the input comes first, and the output filename comes last. The official usage synopsis is wkhtmltopdf [GLOBAL OPTION]... [OBJECT]... <output file>. Its examples include wkhtmltopdf http://www.google.com google.pdf and wkhtmltopdf my.html my.pdf. In each case, the final argument names the output file.
With a relative filename such as report.pdf, the path is resolved from the working directory of the process that ran the command. The manual specifies the output argument, not a universal working directory for every operating system, shell, IDE, scheduled task, container, or application service. A relative path therefore does not necessarily mean the directory you are currently viewing in a file manager.
Relative output path
In this command, report.pdf is a relative path:
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com report.pdf
Find the working directory of the shell or process that launched wkhtmltopdf; that is where the relative filename is resolved. If a script or service launches the command, check the working directory configured for that process, rather than assuming it matches your interactive terminal.

Absolute output path
An absolute path identifies the intended destination directly. For example:
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com /tmp/report.pdf
Use the equivalent absolute path for your operating system and choose a directory that already exists and is writable by the account running the command. This removes uncertainty about which working directory the process uses.
Save the PDF in a specific folder
- Choose the destination directory. Confirm that the directory exists and that the user running
wkhtmltopdfcan write to it. - Put the destination filename last. Use the full path after the input URL or HTML file. For example:
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com /tmp/report.pdf. - Run the command in the same environment that needs the file. If a script or service runs it, verify the path and permissions from that process’s perspective.
- Check the exact filename and directory. Look for the named output file in the specified destination, not in a presumed Downloads or Documents folder.
For a local HTML input, the same output rule applies:

wkhtmltopdf my.html /tmp/my.pdf
The input is my.html; the last argument, /tmp/my.pdf, is the requested output path. If the command uses a relative input or output path, each is interpreted relative to the process’s working directory.

The command-line rule does not automatically describe every integration. A library may return PDF data to its caller or keep it in memory, while a web framework may send a PDF in an HTTP response or save it using its own configuration. Identify which interface is producing the PDF before searching the local filesystem.
C API
In the official C API, the out setting controls output. The API reference says that - sends the PDF to standard output, while an empty value stores it in a buffer. In those cases, do not expect a regular file at a named path: the output is directed elsewhere. Check the API call’s out value and how the application consumes stdout or the buffer.

Framework wrapper
A wrapper may define a separate save path or may stream the generated PDF to a client. For example, PDFKit documents a PDFKit-save-pdf header whose value is the path where the generated PDF is written. That is wrapper-specific behavior; check the integration’s own configuration rather than assuming the command-line destination rule applies unchanged.
Troubleshooting a PDF that seems missing
The command used a short filename
If the output argument was simply report.pdf, locate the process’s current working directory. Then rerun with an absolute destination path so the result is not dependent on that directory.
The command ran from a script or service
The process may have a different working directory from the terminal or file browser you are using. Inspect the launch configuration and the process’s working directory. If you control the command, replace the relative output filename with an absolute one.

The target directory does not exist or is not writable
Confirm that the destination directory exists and that the account running the command has permission to write there. Choose an existing writable directory, then rerun with its absolute path as the final argument.
The PDF went to stdout or a buffer
If the application calls the C API, inspect the out setting. A value of - sends output to standard output; an empty value stores it in a buffer. Follow the application’s handling of that output instead of searching for a file that was never requested.
A wrapper handles the response
If a framework or language wrapper is involved, check whether it streams PDF bytes to the caller or sets a separate save path. Use that integration’s documented behavior to determine where the file is written—or whether it is written to disk at all.

If your goal is to capture a webpage as an image or PDF rather than to find a file produced by wkhtmltopdf, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It does not change where wkhtmltopdf writes files.
For a one-request website screenshot, use this cURL example; the API documentation is at ScreenshotNeo’s documentation:

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response says which page verdict and billing status applied. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
