Windows + PrtScn saves a file in PicturesScreenshots (or the OneDrive-backed Pictures folder). Snipping Tool normally saves captures in its Screenshots folder, but its settings can change that. Windows + Shift + S, Print Screen, and Alt + Print Screen normally copy an image to the clipboard instead of creating a file.
Windows screenshot locations at a glance
Use the shortcut or app you used to determine whether Windows created a file or only copied pixels into memory. This table covers the built-in methods documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Where Windows + PrtScn saves a screenshot
Pressing the Windows key and PrtScn (sometimes labeled PrtSc) captures every display and writes an image file to the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures. In File Explorer, open Pictures, then Screenshots. The files are ready to open, rename, move, or attach without any extra paste step.
If Pictures is in OneDrive
When OneDrive folder backup includes Pictures, the effective path is the Pictures folder inside your OneDrive location rather than the local-only Pictures folder. In File Explorer, expand OneDrive and open Pictures, then Screenshots. A redirected or customized Pictures path can look different from the default, so search within the Pictures folder if you do not see the expected subfolder.

Microsoft no longer provides a separate OneDrive setting called “Save screenshots to OneDrive.” To back up these images, Pictures itself must be included in OneDrive folder backup.
Where Snipping Tool saves captures
Snipping Tool automatically saves a captured snip to its Screenshots folder by default. This applies to the Snipping Tool experience documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Check or change the folder
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Open the More menu (the three-dot button), then choose Settings.
- Review the automatic-save option and the configured Screenshots folder.
- Capture a test snip and use Save as Image if you want to select a different location or filename for that copy.
If automatic saving has been turned off, a capture may exist only in the Snipping Tool editor or clipboard until you explicitly use its Save control. A folder selected in settings also takes precedence over the default location.
Why Windows + Shift + S appears to save nothing
Windows + Shift + S starts the snipping overlay and copies your rectangular, window, full-screen, or free-form selection to the clipboard. It does not, by itself, guarantee a saved image file. Immediately after the capture, Windows normally shows a notification. Select that notification to open the result in Snipping Tool, where you can save it.

Save a Windows + Shift + S capture
- Press
Windows + Shift + Sand make the selection. - Select the capture notification when it appears.
- In Snipping Tool, select the Save control (or Save as Image).
- Choose a folder, filename, and image format, then confirm the save.
If the notification disappeared, paste the clipboard contents into Paint or another image-capable app with Ctrl + V, then use that app’s Save or Save As command. The clipboard is temporary; it is not a folder that File Explorer can browse.
Print Screen and Alt + Print Screen locations
Print Screen
The standalone Print Screen key copies an image of the full screen to the clipboard. Open Paint, a document editor, or another graphics application, press Ctrl + V, and save the resulting image. Until you paste and save it, there may be no screenshot file anywhere on the drive.
Alt + Print Screen
Alt + Print Screen copies only the currently active window. The workflow is the same: focus the window first, press the shortcut, paste into an app, and choose a destination in the Save dialog.
Finding a screenshot that is missing
Work through these checks in order; each one corresponds to a different capture behavior.

- Identify the method. If you used Windows + Shift + S, Print Screen, or Alt + Print Screen, check the clipboard or the capture notification before searching folders.
- Check the standard folder. For Windows + PrtScn, open
PicturesScreenshots. - Check OneDrive’s Pictures. If Pictures is backed up, inspect
OneDrivePicturesScreenshots(or the equivalent OneDrive location shown in File Explorer). - Inspect Snipping Tool settings. Open More > Settings and verify automatic saving and the selected folder.
- Look at the Save dialog’s destination. A manually saved image is wherever you selected in Save or Save As, including a OneDrive folder or This PC.
- Search by the filename or type. If you renamed the image or selected another folder, search File Explorer from your user profile rather than assuming the default Screenshots folder.
How to change where a screenshot is saved
For Snipping Tool
Use Snipping Tool > More > Settings to change its automatic-save behavior or configured Screenshots folder. For an individual capture, choose Save as Image and select any available folder and filename.
For clipboard-based shortcuts
There is no automatic destination to change because these shortcuts produce clipboard content. Choose the destination each time you paste and save in the application you use.
For Windows + PrtScn
The documented destination is the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures. If Pictures has been redirected or included in OneDrive backup, Windows uses that configured Pictures location. To organize files elsewhere, move them after capture or use a different capture workflow with an explicit Save As destination.
Common problems and fixes
Nothing appears in PicturesScreenshots
You may have used a clipboard-only shortcut, or Pictures may point to OneDrive or another redirected location. Confirm the key combination, then inspect the active Pictures path in File Explorer and paste from the clipboard if appropriate.

The Snipping Tool capture is visible but not in the expected folder
Open More > Settings. Automatic saving may be disabled, or the folder may have been changed. Use Save as Image to create a file immediately in a known location.
The notification vanished before you opened it
The image may still be on the clipboard. Open Paint or another editor and press Ctrl + V. If it pastes, save it there. If it does not, take the capture again and select the notification promptly.
OneDrive shows no special screenshot option
That is expected: Microsoft says the dedicated “Save screenshots to OneDrive” setting is no longer available. Include Pictures in OneDrive folder backup if you want the Pictures-based screenshots synchronized.
A third-party capture app uses another folder
The locations above describe Windows’ built-in shortcuts and Snipping Tool. Third-party utilities can choose their own naming and folders; open that application’s preferences or Save dialog to verify its destination.

Which method should you use?
- Choose Windows + PrtScn when you want an automatically saved full-screen file.
- Choose Snipping Tool when you need a selected region, window, annotations, or a configurable save folder.
- Choose Windows + Shift + S when you want a quick selection and are happy to paste and save it yourself.
- Choose Print Screen or Alt + Print Screen for clipboard captures of the whole screen or active window.
