The destination depends on the shortcut and the screenshot app. On Windows, Snipping Tool captures usually go to the Screenshots folder, while plain Print Screen copies the image to the Clipboard. On a Mac, screenshots go to the desktop by default. GNOME Linux saves them in ~/Pictures/Screenshots; KDE users should check Spectacle’s configured save location. If no file appears, first check whether the capture went to the Clipboard or whether the app’s destination was changed.
Find a screenshot quickly
- Identify how you took it. A screenshot shortcut may save a file, copy an image to the Clipboard, or do both.
- Check the expected folder for your system. On Windows, look in the configured Screenshots folder; on macOS, start at the desktop; on GNOME Linux, check
~/Pictures/Screenshots. - Check the capture app’s notification and settings. These are the best clues if the default location has changed.
- If you used a Clipboard-only shortcut, paste the image into an editor and save it. A Clipboard image is not a file and will not appear in a folder until you save it.
The tables below summarize the usual destinations, but treat the screenshot utility’s current settings as authoritative. A changed destination, synchronized or redirected Pictures folder, or different Linux desktop can change the path you see.
Where screenshots go on Windows 10 and 11

Open the configured Screenshots folder
Windows does not require the Screenshots folder to remain at one fixed physical path. If your Pictures folder is redirected or synchronized, the Screenshots folder may sit under that selected Pictures location instead of the usual local one. Use Snipping Tool’s folder or Settings controls to confirm the location on that PC rather than relying on a path copied from another machine.
What to check after Windows + Shift + S
The shortcut launches a capture overlay, but do not assume that completing a snip necessarily created a file. Look for the capture notification and open the image from there if available. If you still cannot locate a file, open Snipping Tool and inspect More > Settings for automatic-save behavior and the configured destination. If you used only PrtSc, test the Clipboard by pasting into an editor.

Where screenshots go on a Mac
Apple’s documented default for screenshots taken with the keyboard shortcuts is the desktop. This covers the full-screen shortcut and the selected-area shortcut, including the window-capture variation. If you have changed the destination in Screenshot, use the current setting rather than assuming the desktop is still selected.

Change the destination
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot.
- Open Options.
- Choose one of the listed destinations or select Other Location to choose a folder.
The selection in Options controls where subsequent captures made through Screenshot are saved. If a screenshot is unexpectedly missing from the desktop, revisit Options to see whether another destination is selected.

When a Mac screenshot is on the Clipboard
Holding Control while using a screenshot shortcut copies the capture to the Clipboard instead of saving it to the desktop. Apple also documents Control-clicking the floating thumbnail and choosing Save to Clipboard. In either case, paste the image into an app that accepts images if you need to use it; to keep a file, save it from that app.
Where screenshots go on Linux
Linux has no single screenshot destination that applies to every distribution and desktop environment. The screenshot app and its configuration determine the save location. Two common desktop cases are GNOME and KDE Plasma.

Check the GNOME folder
Open your home folder, then open Pictures and Screenshots. The tilde in ~/Pictures/Screenshots means your home directory. GNOME’s documented behavior also puts the captured image on the Clipboard, so a missing file may still be available to paste.
Check Spectacle in KDE
Open Spectacle’s configuration and inspect the default save location. If you are unsure which folder is configured, choose “Open Default Screenshots Folder.” Spectacle opens the current default screenshots folder and highlights the last saved capture, giving you a direct route to the file without guessing its path.

Why a screenshot may not be in the expected folder
- The shortcut copied it instead of saving it. Plain PrtSc in Windows and Control-modified screenshot shortcuts on a Mac can put the image on the Clipboard. Paste it into an app and save a file.
- The destination was changed. Review Snipping Tool Settings, macOS Screenshot Options, or your Linux utility’s preferences.
- The Pictures folder points somewhere else. On Windows, synchronization or redirection can change the apparent Screenshots path.
- You are using a different Linux desktop or capture tool. GNOME’s default is not a universal Linux rule; check the app you used.
- You are looking for the wrong capture. Compare the filename and date/time with the moment you took it. GNOME filenames begin with “Screenshot” and include the date and time.
A practical search order when the file is missing
- Check the Clipboard by pasting into an image editor or other app that accepts images. If an image appears, save it as a file.
- Check the platform’s likely default: the configured Screenshots folder on Windows, the desktop on macOS, or
~/Pictures/Screenshotsin GNOME. - Open the screenshot app and inspect its destination and automatic-save settings. On KDE, use Spectacle’s “Open Default Screenshots Folder” action.
- Check the notification from the capture. It may provide a route to open the screenshot or indicate which tool handled it.
- If your Windows Pictures folder is synchronized or redirected, look under that Pictures location and trust the configured Snipping Tool folder over a generic path.

Which platform default should you remember?
For a saved file, start with Windows’ configured Screenshots folder, the Mac desktop, or GNOME’s ~/Pictures/Screenshots. For other Linux desktops, find the location in the screenshot utility. If none of those checks work, determine whether the shortcut copied to the Clipboard instead of saving a file.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Screenshots folder have to be in the same place on every Windows PC?
No. A redirected or synchronized Pictures folder can change where the Screenshots folder appears. Check the folder location configured in Snipping Tool on that PC.
Does Linux always save screenshots in Pictures/Screenshots?
No. That is GNOME’s documented location. KDE Spectacle and other desktop utilities can use their own configured destinations.
