Most browser screenshots and saved web pages are ordinary files on your computer. Start with the operating system’s Downloads folder, then check the browser’s download history to reveal the exact location. The exception is a page saved through a Save dialog, such as Safari’s Web Archive, which is stored wherever you selected.
The filename and extension usually tell you what you captured: .png or .jpg for images, .pdf for print output, .html or .htm for source, and .webarchive or .mhtml for an archived page.
Find a missing capture in two minutes
- Open your computer’s Downloads folder.
- Sort by Date modified and look at files created around the time you captured the page.
- Search for
Screenshotand for the extensions.png,.jpg,.pdf,.html,.htm,.webarchiveand.mhtml. - Open the browser’s downloads list. Its file menu normally includes an option such as Show in folder or Reveal in Finder.
- If nothing appears, repeat the search in the location shown under the browser’s download settings. A custom folder or a “ask where to save” setting may have replaced the default.
A screenshot that was never saved will not appear in any folder. If a save dialog was canceled, or a download failed, capture the page again and watch for the completion notification.
Where each browser puts captures

Firefox
Firefox Developer Tools can capture an entire page or one element. Mozilla documents that the result is saved to the browser’s “Downloads” directory. Firefox Help describes the image name as Screenshot year-month-day at hour-minute-second Page title.png. Search for the word Screenshot if you do not remember the page title.

The folder is controlled by Firefox’s normal download preference, so a company policy or a manually selected directory can change it. Open the downloads panel, select the item, and use the command that reveals it in your file manager.
Chrome
Chrome’s default download folder is configurable under Settings > Downloads. The paths in the table are defaults, not guarantees. If Ask where to save each file before downloading is enabled, every capture may be in a different folder chosen at save time.
For a page file rather than an image, use More > More Tools > Save Page As. Chrome’s Print command can create a PDF: choose Save as PDF, then confirm the destination in the print dialog. A PDF created this way is independent of Chrome’s ordinary image-download folder.
Microsoft Edge
Edge’s Screenshot tool can capture a selected area or an entire webpage, including content beyond the visible screen. Press Ctrl+Shift+S, choose the scope, mark up the result if needed, and select Save. The save dialog determines the final path; use Edge’s download history to reopen or reveal the file later.

Safari on Mac
Safari’s File > Save As menu offers Web Archive and Page Source. A Web Archive stores the page’s graphics and keeps links working while the destination pages remain available. Page Source stores only the HTML source, so it will not contain the downloaded images and other resources that a Web Archive can include. Safari writes either file to the folder you select in the Save dialog.
Search by format, not just by filename
When the name is unknown, the extension is more reliable than a title search. Use your operating system’s file search and filter by:
- PNG or JPG: image screenshots, including most full-page and selected-area captures.
- PDF: output from Chrome’s Print workflow or another print dialog.
- HTML or HTM: page source or a saved HTML document, usually accompanied by a resource folder.
- WEBARCHIVE: Safari’s self-contained page archive.
- MHTML: a single-file web-page archive produced by some Chromium-based workflows or extensions.
Sort results by creation or modification date and narrow the search to the hour of the capture. If your computer synchronizes Desktop or Downloads with a cloud service, check the service’s local folder and its online recycle bin as well.
Understand what was captured

These distinctions explain why a file may be present but appear incomplete. A browser screenshot records the rendered state at capture time; a saved page records markup and, depending on the format, local copies of resources.

Troubleshooting a capture you cannot find
The browser shows a download, but the folder is empty
Open the item from the browser’s downloads page. If it opens successfully, use Show in folder or its equivalent rather than guessing the path. Also check whether your operating system redirects Downloads into a cloud-synced directory.
The file was saved somewhere unexpected
Inspect the browser’s download preference. Chrome’s path is under Settings > Downloads; Firefox and Edge expose an equivalent download-location setting. If “ask where to save” is active, the save dialog’s last-used folder is the most likely location.
You used Print and cannot find an image
Print output is normally a PDF, not a PNG. Search for .pdf and review the print dialog’s destination. A system printer, a PDF application or a network location may have been selected instead of a local folder.
The screenshot is blank, partial or old
Wait for the page to finish rendering, scroll through lazy-loaded sections before a full-page capture, and repeat the capture after dismissing overlays. Pages behind authentication, bot checks or an expired session may not render the content you expected. Browser versions, extensions, privacy settings and administrator policies can also change capture behavior.

The save dialog never appeared
The operation may have been canceled, blocked by a permission policy, or still be processing. Check the browser’s download status for an error, allow downloads for the site if prompted, and retry in a normal (non-private) window. If the browser crashed before saving, there is usually no recoverable screenshot file.
Make future captures easier to recover
- Leave the browser’s download history intact until you have moved important captures into a named project folder.
- Use descriptive filenames immediately after saving, especially when several pages have similar titles.
- Keep image, PDF and archive files in separate folders so extension searches remain useful.
- For repeatable work, record the URL, capture time, viewport or page scope and output format in the filename or a companion note.
- Remember that menu labels, shortcuts and available features can differ by browser version, operating system, device type and administrator policy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recover a screenshot after deleting it from the Downloads folder?
Not from the browser itself. Check your operating system’s trash or recycle bin, any cloud-sync service’s deleted-items area, and backups. Download history can identify the original path but does not recreate a deleted file.
Why do two captures of the same page have different dimensions?
They may use different scopes or viewport settings: a visible-area shot, an element shot and a full-page shot are separate operations. Responsive layouts can also change when the window width, device preset or display scale changes.
Does a Safari Web Archive guarantee that every link works offline?
No. Safari preserves graphics and keeps links working while the destination pages remain available. A Web Archive is not a permanent copy of every future page or remote resource.
