On macOS Tahoe 26, Notes may be stored in iCloud, only on your Mac, or in an internet account such as Google or Yahoo. Start in the Notes sidebar to identify the account; a hidden database in your Library is application data, not a folder of readable notes. For a portable copy, export notes from Notes rather than manipulating that database.
Where Mac Notes can be stored
A note’s location depends on the account shown in the Notes sidebar. Notes with identical titles can exist in different accounts, so check the account and folder—not just the note name.

Quick Notes are notes created through the Quick Note feature, but their account and syncing behavior still depend on the Notes setup. Shared notes are collaboration features, not a separate storage destination: check which account and folder contain the note. Math Notes, where available in the Notes experience, should likewise be located through the sidebar and account rather than inferred from a Finder file.

Apple explains the account options and their limits in its Notes account guide. Some Notes features are available only with iCloud Notes.

Find a note in the Notes sidebar
- Open Notes.
- If the sidebar is hidden, choose View > Show Folders.
- Inspect the account sections—such as iCloud, On My Mac, or a configured internet account—and expand folders as needed.
- Select All iCloud or a particular folder to narrow the list. Search in Notes if you do not know the folder.
The sidebar organizes notes by account and folder. A note appearing in Notes on your Mac does not by itself tell you whether it is synced or local-only.
Check whether a note is in iCloud
First select the iCloud section in Notes and look for the note. To confirm it is available online, sign in to iCloud.com with the same Apple Account and open Notes. iCloud.com shows iCloud notes, not On My Mac notes or notes belonging to Google, Yahoo, AOL, or another provider.
To check sync on Tahoe 26, go to Apple menu > System Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Under Saved to iCloud, click See All if needed, select Notes, and make sure Sync this Mac is on. The Mac and the other device must use the same Apple Account. See Apple’s Notes setup guide for current iCloud steps.

Find On My Mac notes
In Notes, show the folders sidebar and look for On My Mac. If it is not listed, choose Notes > Settings and enable Enable the On My Mac account. This makes the local account available as a destination; it does not automatically move or convert your iCloud notes.
If you want a local copy of an iCloud note, make an export first or deliberately move or copy it into an On My Mac folder. Review the result, especially if the note contains formatting, drawings, or attachments, which may not transfer perfectly between accounts. Disabling or removing an account can make its notes disappear from this Mac; do not assume that means every other copy has been deleted, or that a local-only note is backed up.
Where the Notes data is in Finder
Notes is generally stored in an internal application container rather than as one text file per note. A commonly reported location on current macOS installations is:

~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.notes/To open it, switch to Finder and choose Go > Go to Folder, paste the path, and press Return. The tilde (~) means your user home folder. As an optional inspection shortcut, Terminal can open that folder in Finder:
open "$HOME/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.notes"You may see a database such as NoteStore.sqlite and SQLite companion files such as NoteStore.sqlite-wal or NoteStore.sqlite-shm. These are internal implementation details; contents can change between macOS updates. The path is commonly reported in Apple Community discussions, while Apple’s developer documentation describes app-group containers generally. Apple does not present this database as a supported user-facing archive or editing interface.
Do not edit, replace, or casually copy the database while Notes is using it. The companion WAL and SHM files can participate in SQLite transactions; copying only the main database may not capture a consistent state. The container can include locally stored data as well as cached data for synced accounts, so finding a file there does not prove a note is On My Mac.

Export a readable copy safely
For an individual note, select it in Notes and choose File > Export as > PDF, then choose a destination and click Save. On supported versions, you can instead choose File > Export as > Markdown for a text-oriented copy. Apple documents PDF and Markdown export.
An export is useful for reading, sharing, or keeping outside Notes, but it is not a complete Notes database backup. It may not preserve interactive features, account relationships, collaboration state, or every detail of locked notes. For important iCloud information, Apple’s iCloud archiving guidance recommends exporting Notes as PDFs on Mac. Keep exports in a separate folder or external backup, and maintain a normal Mac backup as well; restoring synced application data is more delicate than restoring an ordinary document.

- Check every account and folder in the Notes sidebar, then search inside Notes rather than Finder.
- Check Recently Deleted if the note was in upgraded iCloud Notes. Apple says iCloud notes generally remain there for 30 days. Recover the note promptly; emptying the folder or deleting it there can make removal permanent.
- Check iCloud and the Apple Account. Confirm you are signed in to the expected account, that Sync this Mac is enabled, and whether the note appears on iCloud.com.
- Check other account settings. A note may belong to Google, Yahoo, AOL, or another account, not iCloud.
- Restart Notes and the Mac and allow time for syncing, particularly if many notes or attachments are involved. Apple’s missing iCloud notes troubleshooting also recommends checking sync and restarting.
- Consider a backup only after preserving the current state. Sync can merge or overwrite restored data. Do not restore an old database over the live Notes container as a first step.
Recently Deleted behavior differs by account. For non-iCloud accounts, deleted notes may be removed permanently or handled according to the provider. If the note is absent from Recently Deleted, check the relevant account and its own recovery options.

Why manually restoring NoteStore.sqlite is risky
NoteStore.sqlite is not a supported export format, and notes can depend on database records, attachments, metadata, and transaction-log files. Replacing it while online can trigger sync conflicts, bring back deleted material, or lose unsynchronized changes. A database restored from Time Machine or another backup may be overwritten or merged with the current iCloud state. Locked and shared notes add further complications.
Database recovery is an advanced last resort, not a guaranteed Apple-supported procedure. If you must investigate an old copy, preserve the current entire Notes container first, and work from a separate copy or test account if possible. Some community recovery reports recommend quitting Notes and disconnecting from the internet before opening an older copy to reduce immediate syncing; that is not a reliable fix for every Tahoe version. Recover content into a separate export, then return to the normal current data only after the desired material is safely saved. For most users, account checks, Recently Deleted, exports, and backups are safer routes.
