By default, macOS saves screenshots to your Desktop. Look for a file named “Screen Shot” followed by the date and time. If it is not there, check the save destination in Screenshot: press Shift-Command-5, choose Options, and look under Save to.
Check the Desktop first
On the default setting, a screenshot is saved as a file on the Desktop. Apple describes the usual filename pattern as “Screen Shot [date] at [time].” The Desktop is the default, not a guarantee: the destination can be changed in Screenshot’s options.

Check or change where future screenshots go
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot.
- Choose Options.
- Under Save to, check the current destination. Choose a listed location to change it, or choose Other Location to navigate to a folder.
The selected destination applies to future screenshots. If you are trying to find an older capture, check the location that was selected when you took it; changing the setting now does not tell you where an earlier file was saved.

Save one screenshot somewhere else
If you only need to put an individual capture in another place, use its floating thumbnail rather than changing the default for every capture. When the thumbnail appears, drag it into a folder or document. The thumbnail appears briefly when enabled, so do this before it disappears.
Copy a screenshot to the Clipboard instead of saving a file
To copy a capture rather than create a normal screenshot file on the Desktop, hold Control along with the screenshot shortcut. Apple gives Control-Shift-Command-3 as the full-screen example. You can also Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard.

A clipboard capture is meant to be pasted into another app; it is not a screenshot file at the save destination. If you need a file, use the normal capture shortcut or save the capture from its thumbnail.

Screenshot is in Applications > Utilities. Apple says Screenshot app capture is available in macOS Mojave 10.14 or later. Its controls provide the save-destination options described above.

Why a screenshot may not be where you expected
- The Desktop is empty: the Save to destination may have been changed. Open Screenshot with Shift-Command-5 and inspect Options > Save to.
- You used Control with the shortcut: the capture was sent to the Clipboard instead of being saved as a regular file.
- You dragged the thumbnail: that individual capture may have gone into the folder or document where you dropped it.
Apple notes that supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later can offer SDR (PNG) or HDR (HEIF) capture formats. Those format choices are model- and macOS-version-specific; they do not change the default save location.
