On an all-time, blended measure of club stature, Nottingham Forest has the strongest case to rank highest, followed by Leicester City and then Derby County. That is a reasoned comparison—not a universal AI verdict. An AI ranking depends on its model, prompt and definition of “biggest”; weigh European achievement more heavily and Forest pulls clear, while a traditional league-title measure gives Derby a stronger claim over Leicester.
The three clubs have very different cases. Forest won back-to-back European Cups; Leicester’s Premier League title in 2015–16 and subsequent FA Cup win made it one of English football’s most visible modern success stories; Derby won two English top-flight championships and reached a European Cup semi-final. A ranking that ignores any one of those records is incomplete.
What does “biggest club” mean?
“Biggest” is not a formal football statistic. It can mean the most successful club by honours, the most historically important, the largest by support or commercial reach, or the most prominent right now. Those definitions produce different rankings:
- Most successful: usually emphasises league titles and major trophies.
- Greatest: adds the quality and significance of peak teams, European achievement and cultural impact.
- Biggest: may also include fanbase, attendance, stadium, media profile and reach.
- Most relevant now: gives greater weight to current league status and recent exposure.
For a transparent blended comparison, a model could weight European success at 25%, top-flight achievement at 20%, domestic cups at 15%, longevity and historical importance at 15%, support and attendance at 10%, modern relevance at 10%, and rivalry and cultural significance at 5%. That is a framework for judgement, not an official formula or a measurement of the clubs’ current commercial size.

The prompt matters, too. Asking which club is “most successful” is not the same as asking which is “biggest.” A useful prompt would be: “Rank Derby County, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest among English football clubs. Define ‘biggest’ before ranking. Consider European success, top-flight titles, domestic cups, longevity, attendance, fanbase, cultural importance and modern relevance. Show your weighting, separate facts from judgement, and give the strongest argument against your order.”
Unless a ranking names the AI model, version, date and prompt, it should be described as one model’s judgement—not what AI collectively thinks. “UK-wide” also needs care: these three clubs are English. A true UK comparison would need to set out whether it includes Scottish clubs such as Celtic and Rangers, Welsh clubs in the English system, Northern Irish clubs, and other historical or non-league sides. The comparison below is therefore among the three English clubs named in the question, not a precise ranking of every club in the United Kingdom.

1. Nottingham Forest: the strongest all-time case
Forest’s defining advantage is European achievement: the club won the European Cup in 1979 and 1980. It also won the English top-flight title in 1977–78 and has a substantial domestic cup record. Those European victories, achieved under Brian Clough, give Forest a peak that neither Leicester nor Derby can match. They are the clearest reason to put Forest first in a history-weighted ranking. There is a fair counterargument. Forest’s greatest period was concentrated in a relatively short span, and its record has not matched that of England’s most consistently dominant clubs across every era. A model focused on recent visibility could therefore rank Leicester higher. Forest’s return to European competition after a long absence, through its 2024–25 season, is a modern-relevance point—but it should not be confused with a European trophy. 2. Leicester City: the strongest modern-era challenger
Leicester’s 2015–16 Premier League title is one of English football’s most remarkable modern achievements. The club followed it with an FA Cup in 2020–21, has won three League Cups and two Community Shields, and played in the Champions League in 2016–17. That combination gives Leicester a potent case based on modern recognition, major domestic honours and a global audience reached by the title-winning season.
The club’s record is broader than that peak: Leicester lists eight second-tier titles and a League One title among its honours. Its official record also shows only one season outside the top two divisions. These accomplishments indicate longevity and resilience, although lower-division titles should not be added to major trophies as if they were equivalent. Leicester’s principal limitation in an all-time comparison is that its European record does not approach Forest’s two European Cups. Nor does one extraordinary league title by itself settle which club is larger: sustained success, historical presence and the criteria being used still matter. But a modern-profile ranking could reasonably put Leicester first among these three.

3. Derby County: more than a “fallen club”
Derby’s historical case is substantial. The club won the English top-flight title in 1971–72 and 1974–75, lifted the FA Cup in 1946 and reached the European Cup semi-final in 1972–73. Its 1970s teams were genuine contenders, not a footnote, and the club’s history is closely associated with Brian Clough and Dave Mackay. Derby’s official honours record lists its titles and European progress.

Derby also has a meaningful support history: the club records a Baseball Ground attendance of 41,826 against Tottenham Hotspur in September 1969. That historical figure helps illustrate the scale of its following at the time; it should not be mistaken for a comparison of current attendance or fanbase. Derby’s trophy record includes one FA Cup, four second-tier titles and several other competitions, including the Texaco Cup and Watney Cup. Those secondary honours add context but should be kept separate from major national and European trophies.
Derby can outrank Leicester under a traditional, title-focused framework: it has two top-flight championships to Leicester’s one and a European Cup semi-final. Leicester moves ahead in a blended or modern-profile ranking because of its Premier League-era visibility, broader major-cup record and recent achievements. Derby’s lower contemporary profile does not erase its historical stature, but it does make an overall second-place case harder under criteria that include modern relevance.

The comparison uses major honours and notable European achievements, not a single total that treats every competition as interchangeable. Community Shields, second- and third-tier titles, and competitions such as the Texaco Cup and Watney Cup matter to club histories, but should be identified separately rather than added indiscriminately to a major-trophy count. The clubs’ own records provide the detail: Derby, Leicester and Forest.
Alternative rankings—and what they reveal
- European pedigree: Forest first, Derby second, Leicester third. Forest’s two wins decide the top spot; Derby’s semi-final puts it ahead of Leicester on this narrow measure.
- Top-flight title count: Derby first, with Forest and Leicester level on one each. A broader measure would need to account for runners-up finishes and time spent competing at the highest level.
- Modern profile: Leicester could rank first, followed by Forest and Derby, because its Premier League title, FA Cup and Champions League campaign are more recent.
- Blended all-time stature: Forest, Leicester, Derby is a defensible order if European success, domestic honours, history and modern relevance all count.
Does the blended ranking stand up?
Forest first is the most robust part of the verdict when historical achievement matters: two European Cups are a distinctive advantage. Leicester second is reasonable but not inevitable. It reflects the breadth and recency of Leicester’s major achievements, while Derby’s two top-flight titles and European Cup semi-final give it a credible case for second under a tradition- or title-heavy model. Derby third is a blended judgement, not a dismissal of the club’s importance.
None of these three is conventionally grouped with England’s modern commercial “Big Six”; that label is not an official classification and reflects a different debate from historical achievement. Forest’s European record and Leicester’s Premier League triumph nevertheless place both among the country’s most memorable clubs of their respective eras. Derby belongs in the conversation too, especially when the comparison gives proper weight to its 1970s peak.
